Hard makes your life a lot easier. mostly because your warrior won't accidentally gib your party anymore, this means that it's a lot more viable to start bringing melee team mates a long (Like Aveline, Fenris and Isabella),

I've been playing on hard and I'm enjoying it.  Its not as challenging as DAO was; but its not a cakewalk like Normal is.   I'll probably up it to Insanity for a second playthrough; but right now my tactical RPG skills are a little rusty so hard is still keeping me entertained.

I just wish that on hard you could get friendly fire from spells; but not melee attacks.  I liked having to aim my spells carefully in DAO (even though that was a challenge playing on 360); but with a 2 handed warrior anything near me is going to die and there isn't much I can do to conveniently keep my melee allies from getting smacked.

Does anyone know if there is a way to program the AI of a melee wielding ally to stay the hell away from my whirling dervish of death warrior while still engaging enemies?

Well, what you could do that should work decentlyish is that you tell your Melee AI to attack the elite, and then you clear up all the trash mobs with your 2-hander.

Lately Ive been bringing Fenris along instead of Merril. He is much less effective then her, but his voice acting is awesome and Ive been able to design him in a way that he is somewhat useful. I also like bring him with Anders since I get friendship with anders and rivalry with fenris almost every dialogue.

Can you stun each other with Sunder? :)

If not, then maybe he would benefit from your wild swings, similarly to how you would from his.

If this meant to be a tanking build or just a dps build??

Very DPS oriented.  Its pretty crummy at tanking since it relies on the "best defense is a good offense" mantra.

If you want to do some tanking then you should sink a few points into the defender branch or at the very least invest in stonewall so you can survive some of the really devestating and hard to avoid attacks from elite enemies.   The underlings shouldn't be as big a problem since you can lay down heavy damage against several clustered enemies simultaneously, so they'll drop quick.

Whohoo! This is great. Didn't have a clue what you were talking about when I first read it but I decided to follow up with this when I got Fenris. This is almost as fun as critting creatures into a spread of body parts with a bow.

^_you can use this build instead of a tank but it's not much a good tank as a "tank" if you're looking for someone with high mitigation to take all the beating.
I'm using a similar niche with Fenris as a "tank" which makes an incredible party damage output. Really appropriate that the more damage he takes the more damage he does. Aveline can go back to sit in her office.

I thought it was for DPS, but in the videos it seemed like he was the only warrior tanking things. Just wanted to be sure.

The build tanks surprisingly well because it runs on a quarter mitigation and three quarters kiting, i.e. "I'm not there to be hit." It's pretty good as a Shock and Awe method: you rush in, do a couple of huge swiping hits on some trash, gathering a lot of threat, then use the closing attack teleport to crash into another group of trash 10 ft away, leaving the original group trailing after you and taking damage from ranged party members. There's so much melee AoE, knockback, knockdown, and stagger coming off the vanguard that trash mobs are always on the back foot. Add some Elfroot potions and greater heals to offset the inevitable ranged damage, and it's actually pretty damn effective for tanking.

I have to say, I'm not that far into DA2 at this point, but I think I may take up this character build. I definitely loved Vanguard in ME2, and I love the "The best defense is a good offense" mantra, so I think I'll give this a go (on a lower difficulty, first.)

It happens on PC also.  I was wondering how I ended up with extra ability points after respecs. Thanks, now I know.

It works a little differently on Xbox.  It gives you all the points for the respec, but doesn't remove any of your spent ones.  Doubling your current ability and specialization points.

[*]
[*]Works for me on PC, but when I reload it leaves me with the same 3 skills I spent before: Tremor, scythe, and sunder, so its 3 extra points each reload ... don't want to abuse it ..

Just wondering if you are gonna spend all that money on those tomes/elixirs how exactly are you going to have 50 sovereigns for the deep roads expedition?

Very important question, and I'd like to see an answer as well.

I had exactly 50 sovereigns left after completing all act 1 quests by level 11. I actually bought a few extra respec potions and had to sell all my jewelry to make it to 50 gold. I went into the deep roads practically naked, it was very close.

Or you can just have Dougal pay your way, that worked quite well for me.

I'm actually really worried about this as well, and I'm not really sure how the jewelry would make much of a difference.  The amount of gold enemies drop is pathetic, and all of the "junk" items sell for next to nothing.  In fact, I don't even know why they put them in the game in the first place since all you get is a trash can with a different name that sells for a few copper.   Why not just go the next step and make it money that doesn't fill up an inventory slot?  You can easily get more than 50g, but not so much if you bought two items for 27g each, a few respec potions, a backpack and two companion armors.

Right now I have 28g and only two quests left.

I'm pretty sure if you don't have the cash at the end of Act 1, a greedy lil dwarf will loan it to you, then come looking for it later as I recall. I'll look for the article that pointed this out to me and link it if I can.

I finished act 1 with exactly 50 gold and a few silver. I bought the tome of technique, elixer of technique, 2 companion armor upgrades, 2 backpacks, 1 necklace that said it increases the amount of coin enemies drop, and about 7-8 makers sigh potions.

I'm loving my Vanguard on Hard mode... Guide is really helping, especially with the party composition and talents, I just like to focus on one character (me) so your build for the companions is really great.

How about maxing out one resistance and then have both mages spam Tempest or whatever at the group surrounding Hawke?

It's not needed, imho. Vanguard is one big AOE, there's generally no need for another.

Wonderful build, btw. Having loads of fun with it exploding mobs all over the screen. Did you change Merill's spells, btw? Didn't see the prison/mind blast there >_>

i was struggling to optimise my cross-class combo (don't have too much time to play and i only play in nightmare). You're guide his very usefull, great idea in the tactics and the vanguard his, well, overpowered.

Only boss fight are "tough". i have one shot all my party member one time or two (in a crazy bloodfrienzy fight) but "ho well", with you're guide they can fight very well even with many injuries :D.

Yes I had to change Merril and Anders builds as they were completely ineffective against the rock wraith the way I had them designed before. Merril was worthless as primal and Anders was worthless as vengeance. Considering the rock wraith is about 3 times harder then anything before him, it makes sense to design a party which can defeat him since all content before him is significantly easier. I am really happy with my builds and tactics for Anders, Merril, and Varric as of now.

If he's anything like me, he had to change things around for the Deep Roads; the bosses were extremely rough with Anders not basically being a full-time healer, so it kind of makes sense to shift some of his offensive utility to Merrill.

Edit: I supposed I should have hit refresh before I replied because I was an hour late...

Having a great time with a similar build on my second play through, although I would KILL for a tactic command that simply states "Stay the hell away from me you idiots".

I can't count how many times I am about to land the big ole hurt on someone and Anders, out of no where, strolls up next to me.

I'm only playing it on hard, so I doubt I could help with specific problems, but if you want to do this without pausing, you have to make liberal and intelligent use of the "select all" command to get your party clear of the various aoe effects.
