So, ive scanned this entire forum going all the way up to page 50 and finally got fed up with all the possible work arounds and little things to try and get my game to work with my graphics card. Now the purpose of this thread is for ATI users ONLY. ive seen many where the thread is jumbled with both Nvidia and ATI fixes and it can get confusing at times. so i am not singling out nvidia users but rather just seperating you guys from us ATI users cause our problems vary between nvidia. So if any nvidia users happen upon this thread and get angry, then go make one like i just did. so anyways, just to get started here are my current specs:

Windows XP SP3
AMD athlon 64 X2 6000+
ATI radeon HD 4830 sapphire
M3A78-EM (motherboard)

so there are the essentials. now my problem is a bit different from some players i would guess. others get tearing in the graphics and can still play, but mine is a crashing problem. my crashes vary between 30 seconds - 5 minutes depending on how lucky i am. now my crashes only happen when i try to make a new character or load my old character but it stays perfect at the log in screen. only four times was i actually able to get into the game and move my character, but that only lasted for as long as 1 minute. For starters ive tried everything from updating my Microsoft visual C++ with the many links on this forums. didnt fix it. ive tried lowering graphics 1 by 1 and vice versa, uninstalled and reinstalled now for my 8th time, disabled v-sync with no good results, disabled intro movies and frame-rate buffers, and even went so far as to downgrade my driver all the way to 8.12 for CCC and that didnt work either. Now here is the strange thing i found, this has all started ever since i upgraded to the 4800 series with ATI. before this was all happening to me, i had a different setup which was like this (this used to be my setup until i changed it a couple of days ago, 11/13/2009):

Windows XP SP3
AMD athlon 64 X2 5200+
ATI radeon HD 3850
M2N-E SLI edition (motherboard)

now this setup was flawless for me. with a couple of hiccups in the game in the beginning and some crashes, it all got fixed with patch 1.01. after that i was able to get past lothering, ostegar, finished bercillian forest completely, finished the tower of magi (AWESOME PART might i add ^_^), and stopped at orzemmar due to the fact i decided to stop playing and upgrade my computer with the current setup i have (specs at the beginning of post). So what im trying to get at is this, ever since i got this specific graphics card, i ran into all these mess of problems. ive seen a lot of others with the 4800 series having issues, but ive also seen some with the 3850 having the problems i have now. so this is all confusing as far as why and how some of these cards do and dont work. So to finish all this, I made this thread in hopes that the devs will see it and learn from it to make a patch for us ATI users. Perhaps though this isnt just a graphics issue but also might have something to do with motherboard, processor and OS versions as well, i really dont know, but its something to think on.

PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE!!! start posting your specs, exactly what problems you have whether it be complete crashing or tearing or discoloration...etc. IF you did find a work around for your issue, please post it here. i will be checking this thread throughout the week to keep it bumped and up top. cheers to hoping that bioware will make this a sticky. as for nvidia users, someone else make a thread for them. i wont because i dont use Nvidia anymore. lets all make this forum tidy and neat!! ;)

Don't be in such a hurry.  Bumps that frequent will just get your thread locked down.  I started out with two Radeons, an X1950 Pro in an X2 4200, and an HD 3850 in an X2 4800.  Neither of them has done anything unhusual.  I have a new HD 4850 to install in the one with the 3850, and will move that card into the PC with the X1950.  But I haven't wanted to haul the newer and faster one out of its niche (big beast in a steel, not aluminum, case, and not handy to just "pop it right out" of where I've got it wedged into place).

P. S.  Instead of narrowing the symptom down to strictly one or another 3Dhardware family, you need to look at the entire system.  The fans of Oblivion may include some of the most technically minded folks I've ever come across, and when it came to that game, many of us wouldn't have had much fun at all without help from some / many of them.

For instance, the ubiquitous inboard sound processors from Realtek created problems with far more than merely audio!  You really need the newest drivers for everything, starting with your motherboard and working outward.

There are just so many permutations to the PC conflict situation that it's just not feasible for developers to locate and test every possibility, even if they wanted to do so.  I will repeat a particular piece of advice given out many times by many of the Oblivion hardware gurus.

Start your testing from a totally clean boot.  No mods, no AV, no internet, no Instant anything, look up the full description of the procedures at Microsoft, and find out how it runs that way.  If there are still problems, disable anything you can, such as IR receivers, almost anything USB (if possible, run from PS/2 ports for mouse / KB, and use a "plain" KB if you have one, not a gamers' special), go into the Setup and return any overclocks in there to normal.

Once you finally have a clean baseline running like it should, only then start adding back what was taken away, just one thing at a time!

I think many of us ATI users have just given up on this game. I check back every few days to see if theres anything new to fix the issues i have. My issue is the monitor going into powersaver mode and locking. I cant get out have to hard reboot. Funny thing is my monitor is not set to go into power saver mode ever neither is my computer. This is happening in ostagar. I went and bought a Navida 275 and was able to play fine. I took the navida back because i decided this game wasnt worth spending an extra $240.

So its definatly an ATI issue.

My set up is ATI 3870.

4 gigs of ram.

Windows Vista 64 sp 1

AMD 9600 quad core.

I feel very sorry for you persons, but have no issues with my Ati card. So Ati cards are not useless by default.

MA790XT-UDP4, Phenom2 810, 8 gig ddr3. XFX 4870 XXX 512. Win 7 64 bit.

I remember a memory management problem that happend also with Sacred 2.

I wish I could get a crash to desktop. Mine will either lock up to a black screen with no info and requires a reboot, or lock up to a screen that is brown and displaying my resolution and refresh rate settings... which also requires a reboot.

Win7 x64
2x 3870
q6600

Asus p5e

ah didnt think of that gorath thank you. yea like im seeing already, some of it varies between card users. thats where i have thought maybe its just not an issue with just the card but also has to do with motherboard, ram and processor setup. but thats just a theory. I dont know but im thinking i will also just wait for a patch. but regardless, keep posting your specs in here and keep this thread alive. i know the devs are looking even if they are not answering. i hope they will watch this thread too in hopes of applying our specs to their fixes

I used Rivatuner to downclock my 3850 GPU to about 20% and it's worked mostly well since then, although I have to keep my graphics setting at about medium. Above that and it will black-screen again.

Black screen issue for me as well... using a Radeon HD3850. i actually found some .dmp files that correspond to the crashes i am having in ostagar and it does look like it is a driver issue. in the dmp file it says "Probably caused by : atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag+127f8 )".

I have tried all the possible fixes discussed in the forum with no luck and even upgraded to windows 7. i contacted AMD and EA about the dump file issue as well and hopefully they will get back with me.

Worst experience with a game i have ever had...

EDIT: just ran a debugger on daorigins.exe while playing... the exeption that comes up is as follows:

Sun Nov 15 11:53:22.267 2009 (GMT-7): ModLoad: 00000000`15710000 00000000`15773000 C:\\Program Files (x86)\\AGEIA Technologies\\v2.8.1\\PhysXCooking.dll
---
--- 1st chance DLL_Load exception ----
---------------------------------------------------------------

that is the only entry in the report... the game crashed in 7 sec after loading off a save in ostagar.

Possibly a conflict with ATi cards and Phisx?... i never had any issues with mirrors edge...

hope some people can use this info better than i can. i will be sending this info to EA again. not that they will read my mails...

I was having a problem with the game running perfect until i saved my game in Ostagar. From then on, every time i load a game saved in Ostagar it would immediately shut off the monitor and hard lock.

After also trying every trick under the sun, i finally tried Riva Tuner and underclocked my GPU 20% or so.

Well it runs now with no crashes as of yet, though the frame rate hicups a little, but at least it works.

Still i would rather not have to resort to this tactic for very long. Something needs to be fixed.

I'm am running:

ATI Radeon HD 3870
AMD Phenom 2 X4 940 3000 Mhz
8 Gigs Kingston Hyper X
Creative X-FI Fatality Pro
Gigabyte Motherboard

Since I had the top level answer spot tied down, I've mentioned Clean Boot diagnotics there, in a new "P. S.".

I recommend it to all those having problems.  It is really amazing how various processes and parts cross-connect, and the Clean Boot is how to track those conflicts down.

There appear to be separate reference pages for Win2000, WinXP, and Win7 (don't know about Vista) . . this is XP: support.microsoft.com/kb/316434

I lived in Houston while the Oilers played their home games in the Astrodome, and could afford to attend quite a number of those games, but the fact of the matter is that I was a Cowboys fan during those years.  I got my first VCR so that I could watch taped games when the Cowboys were on TV at the same time as the Oilers played in the dome. One or another of my friends in other cities taped those games for me, because the NFL could force the local station into a blackout.

We're talking American style football, of course, and heavy drinking isn't quite as much of a tradition, except at the parking lot tailgate parties . .

Here's hoping your hangover is a mild one!

UPDATE:

well it seems my game works for some reason, though to a certain extent. im not sure exactly why it now is working just fine though im expecting a crash at every turn i make lol. pretty much all i did was go to my CCC and turned all my 3d settings to full blast again. i play world of warcraft and i wasnt gonna let dragon age not working kill my experience with full graphics on other games. so i just decided to turn all the settings back to maximum. anyways i decided to try one more time since im stubborn and loved the hell out of dragon age but i took a different approach and created a new character. Dwarf warrior, noble background and so on. surprisingly enough, the game actually started without a hitch. i have played for 7 hours straight with no crashes on that character. im in redcliffe now, just got there and also i had decided to try my luck and go over to orzemmar just to see if it might crash it, and to my surprise i lasted in orzemmar with no crashes at all (went there because i heard to become a berserker u need to be friends with oghren, but im not gonna take the time to do that right now so i backtracked to redcliffe).

now here is the kicker, after i decided to take a little break, i wanted to try my luck with my old saved character (rogue lvl 15) and he was pretty bad ass. but unfortunately, as i tried to load him, i got again the Crash to desktop. so i guess my old saved game is dead, im a lil pissed i gotta start over but im just happy i can play (or until i get to some point in the game it will crash, im expecting this at any moment for some reason lol). i really dont know if anything ive said so far will work for you all but try it and see what happens. i will update again if i get a CTD at any point!

You might have used Edit to reduce that second copy down to what you wrote into this third message, you know . .
