I just defeated Sarevok for the first time in many years, which was crazy hard with all of his cronies in there. I watched the cutscene and finished off the remaining skeletal remains, but when I tried to leave, there was no door! What do I do? Is it intended that I only go to that chamber as the very final act of the game?
I wasn't quite ready level-wise to do the expansion content when I reached BG, and once in BG the plot swept me along and I decided to continue with it and then do the expansion stuff after. Maybe this is impossible though. What should I do here? Fortunately I do have an autosave from the entry to the chapel, so I am not trapped within it on a recent save.
Thanks for your time.

Beating Sarevok ends the game. If you want to do the ToTSC content you need to do that first before confronting Sarevok. So yeah use that temple save, head out to Ulgoth's Beard/Durlag or wherever you wanted to explorer before chasing Sarevok. Sort of doesn't make sense Sarevok would be waiting, but by this point he have already foiled his plans, so you can get more experience/loot by doing the expansion stuff.

Shoot, that ruins the flow. Thanks for the info though. It's not the end of the world. It's nice of Sarevok to wait for me after I cleared out all his goons instead of trying to take me out at night or something.
On another note, I was able to win the final battle primarily by dividing and conquering. For instance, I would summon some gnolls and Sarevok would chase while I would dispel magic and then shoot down his mage ally. I could then at times reset the fight because I was luring Sarevok so far away that he didn't engage me. This is probably atypical, so I am curious what your strategies are. What is your go-to move or clever trick to take down the evil champ?

The only way I have ever been able to beat Sarevok is to throw a fireball at the rough area where he is in the temple. The words, "Sarevok attacks CHARNAME" then appear in the dialogue box. Then everyone runs out of the temple before Sarevok initiates a conversation.
Once outside I just mob him with summons whilst everyone else peppers him with Arrow of Piercing. None of his cronies bother to follow him outside.
Then I end the game by walking through the temple doors.
This way only takes a few rounds to take him down. Every time I tried to defeat him inside the temple ends up with me getting wasted really quickly.

Sarevok uses a sword, so buff one of your melees to the gills with anti slashing items. best fullplate, helm of balduran, cloak of balduran, golden girdle, 18+ dex, buffest shield you can lay your hands on, etc. You can drop your AC vs slashing down to -10 or so, and then even Sarevok has a lot of trouble hitting you. Gulp potions like there's no tommorow (because there isn't), and you should be relatively free of interferance from Sarevok's goons. Assign a cleric to stand watch on the meatshield keeping Sarevok busy while the rest of the party whumps on the goons. Once they are gone (the spellcasters in particular), it's really not so bad.
One trick I like is to cast a web and an entangle right underneath the party. When the mages teleport over to you, they almost instantly get held by it. Use freedom of movement on your own party to be immune.

I'm w/Matuse on this one. Last time in Sarevok was a breaze as was the Durlag Demon night - both one and done. Aec'Letec was my nightmare last time through. The good thing about fighting Sarevok is you know he's in there b/c Tamoko outside just told you he was. That way you don't feel guilty doing what I did and buffin' up for the fight. Jaheira cast Bless and Defensive Harmony on the party; Dynahier cast Haste; My PC, Minsc, and Khalid quaffed various giant strength potions and Heroism and off we went to pound anything that moved - my PC went directly for Sarevok. I let the scripts guide my NPCs - Dynahier and Jaheira throwing spells (Summon Insects, Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb, Blindness (that I know of) went toward Sarevok); Imoen fired her bow; and Minsc and Khalid whacked whoever was nearest. They took care of the mage and Tazok and then moved to help me hack up Sarevok. "That was easy."
