I'd like to solicit some opinions.  First, I'm wondering which sniper rifle you guys prefer.  I'm torn between the Viper and getting the Widow on the Collector ship.  Personally, I feel the Widow works better for a soldier with heightened adrenaline rush (this is how I played on hardcore difficulty).  I'm seriously considering using the Viper in kind of the same way I'd use the Mattock as a soldier, except for when things got up close and personal, in which case I'd use the SMG.  Think of it as being a "designated marksman".  Similar to a sniper, but different.

One thing I like about the idea of using the Viper is that I could take shotgun training on the collector ship, and then use the M22 for close range assassinations.

Is this a good idea, or would I be better off rolling with the Widow?

I personally like the Widow but it seems like you [at least sometimes] want to use the Cloak to get up close & personal. If you do like Close-Quarters-Combat then going with the Viper sounds fine and use a Shotgun that matches your playstyle.

Standard thing - save before the choice and run through the ship with both options, see which you prefer. Either one is a sound choice.

I prefer the Widow by far. Don't think you can't CQC without shotguns either, SMGs are perfect for that job. I love the Locust at range, but the Tempest is such a fun CQC weapon.

If you like one-shot kills, then you cannot go wrong with the Widow. Like termokanden just stated, you can use SMGs at close range. The Tempest is a good option, and the Shuriken also does a great job. The Locust not so much.

The Viper is certainly more versatile (about 3-4 shots to strip an enemy's protection, no real ammo problems), and it allows you to pick shotguns for your weapon's training.

Note: just speaking from personal experience--and someone may have a different experience--the Widow (and Mantis) benefit the most from the Assassin class passive (greater time dilation and weapon damage), the Viper from the Agent class passive. I find the Viper is absolutely terrible when used with Assassin: you get one maybe two shots off with the greater time dilation and you seem to take more damage since you are out of cover.

Never played a shotgun infiltrator myself, but the videos certainly make it look viable. Personally, I thought the pistols and SMGs did well enough at the close- to medium-range game that made shotguns a bit redundant (but then, I could just be an idiot).

As for my preferred rifle, it's the Viper. What I've done before was pick up a Widow, then roll back as soon as appropriate. You could try that, if you want.

I have both Widow and Shotgun Infiltrators and both work really well, it is all a matter of how you want to play your character. SG with Viper will be more move in and kill with a blast of buckshot to the head, more a run and gun type of play, and of course the Widow will be kill everything from long/medium range surgical strikes. So go with the one that most conforms to how you want to play this character.

Do a playthrough with each option. I actually love the versatility of my Scimitar/Viper Infiltrator the most, but one shotting mooks with the Widow is fun too.

I love the Widow. I don't get the shotgun because I feel that I have screwed up if I let an enemy get close to me as an infiltrator (The Tempest + Cryo Ammo does help me with husks), and the Locust is basically an assault rifle that is classified as a SMG.

Also, choosing the widow doesn't mean you aren't able to do cqc, just like picking shotgun doesn't stop you from thinning them out at long range; so there is still a lot of flexibility whatever you go for.

Widow. I always play a sniper infiltrator, so I would never pick anything else. The viper is good, but doesn't have enough sheer power in my opinion, so on my latest playthrough I went straight from the mantis to the widow. If the enemies get too close, out comes the carnifex(warp ammo)

I used to love the viper, until I got hold of the widow, I'll never go back.

I said this already.

SMGs are perfect for CQC. I'm sure you can use pistols too.

I chose widow on the Collector Ship but I'm kinda wishing that I had chose shotgun instead. Maybe i don't have enough SR upgrades on that save, but the widow doesn't seem to be as epic for me as everyone says it is.
That being said, I would prefer the viper. It'll have you more exposed to cover, but I think it's more fun to use. The widow is just a mantis with the damage range on the viper. If that suits your style of play though, go ahead. Just make sure you save before you make your choice.

It's a question of preference, the two choices give you very different play styles. Once you have the head shot upgrade (easily obtainable in the first act) and add in an ammo power the widow is a beast, a cloaked shot to the head will put most things down. This play style means your spending a lot of your time at the back, popping in and out of cloaks and sniping. A fine way to play for sure, I'm a fan of the widow. There's also videos of how to use your widow like a shotgun, point blank range on husks with no scope it's pretty funny.

Shotguns + Viper is a different kettle of fish. The viper can be used to strip defences from afar then you get in close with your shotty and finish them off, slap and area reave on unshielded enemies and they are all yours. Alternatively use your cloak to move in and hit them with a huge shotgun blast and get out. I find it's a more varied style that's less reliant on a single weapon and power.

Oh and with the viper try this, freeze a pack of enemies with cryo ammo, come out of zoom, head shot the lot when they are all frozen it's very satisfying.

In short, both fun in their own way. When your done, make another infiltrator!

Personally, I go with the Widow. For me, the Infiltrator is all about hanging back and using the time dilation to surgically remove enemies. I usually select team mates which compliment my ability to strip enemy defenses which helps make it easy to take them down with a single shot. Having played a Vanguard now, I would choose to use the shotgun and play more of an "up close" kind of game. This might be my next playthrough, thanks for the idea!

Widow. Viper is better for non-sniper classes who won't be going for/getting monster headshot damage anyways.
