So why did Bioware lock up companions inventory in DA2?

If they want to give each companion their own look they can have each armor type (massive, light, etc) have their own model, and vary the texture by the specific item. I can't see any reason to do it this way unless they didn't want to invest the time or they're planning to charge extra later on.

Is it because they want to create companion armor themself and sell it as DLC like they did in ME2?

Those were just SKIN packs not armor   God every time someone brings up ME2 it makes me want to snap those discs in half.

People waste too much time looking for armor for their 6 companions.

Isnt that exactly what makes roleplaying games fun? I remember Diablo times when we killed same mobs again and again to get a nice item drop.

No what makes RPGs fun is less options, and "pressing A to watch something AWESOME happen" and underwear PG-13 humping, and cover shooting. :pinched:

@Ravenmyste It wasn't difficult for me in DA:O so I don't understand the logic behind that but you bet your **** there going do a ME 2 and charge you $$ to get different outfits.

Yeah, this was actually a part of DA:O I really enjoyed. I couldn't wear all the armor at once, so I liked having my teammates wear them so I could see them all. This is one change I don't like.

OMG you said there is something you don't like about DA2? The trolls are gonna eat you

Planscape Torment did not allow you to change the look of your companions.
Jade Empire did not allow you to change the look of your companions.
Mass Effect 2 barely allowed you to change the look of your companions.

Did that make any of the above RPGs less or more of an RPG?
Did it lessen your enjoyment of them that you couldn't play dressup with the companions?
Personally I like it because that means most of what I pick up will be for me.

Yes, I can't even bring myself to finish the boring ME2.   Jade Empire was amazing, but it would have been a lot better with a full 6 man party and real gear.

Yes, it lessens my enjoyment of games when you cant change gear in an RPG.

you know what other games don't let you change the look of your characters?  Crappy JRPGs like FFX

Or maybe it's just because they want companions to have a unique look instead of just being taller or shorter suits of barely recolored armor.

This would be hitting the nail on the head. They want companions to have their own unique style, instead of just walking around in the stuff you aren't wearing. Personally, I like setting my companions up in armor, but I understand where Bioware is coming from.

In other words, we can't be trusted to think for ourselves, so Bioware adopted EA's attitude and decided to think for us.

Diablo is designed around epic loot grinding for a single character.

Yeah but still it was fun to grind it, not saying that I like to do this again, but item management for companions is a huge fun part in RPG's

You spent a lot of time managing companion equipment in Diablo?

Taleroth you win +1 internets

I'm all for different options.
Why limit one group of players in favor of another?
People complained that there is too much text to read, they complained that there is too much of inventory management, next thing they'll complain is that there are too many quests. For the love of God, it's and RPG not FPS (though the difference is getting smaller).
Personally i enjoyed equipping my party members, be it for stats or looks, it doesn't matter, at least i could use most of those things i looted.
Now most of the things i get is just plain useless.
I like games with depth: crafting, loot system, story, combat... so should i and many of us be restricted just 'cause they decided to appeal to lazy people by stripping an important system to the bare bone?
Simple "Lazy on/off" option would suffice and would satisfy everyone.

It is a Role-Playing Game, simulating real life characterism... how often would you let someone undress and redress you?

How about take your weapons or leave you to die?

That made no sense, we should split the loot with the party, i find a good armor i can´t use i give it to the party member that can, simple, same principle goes for weapons so why nor armor.

But it's not like they've got  companion armor and are just refusing to put that in the game because they don't like you. They're not spending the dev time to make the armor in the first place. At least be honest about what you're arguing for.

Well, I do think that companion armor with be included in DLC so that they can grab some more cash from their players, but either way the option to customize companion armor has been stripped for DA2. Regardless of the reason, it's still something that you could do in DAO but can't in DA2. Once again, DA2 offers less than DAO.

No matter how Bioware tries to play it, companion inventory was removed as a cost cutter. Most companions use the same skeleton and body mesh as other members of their races ('cept for Isabella, know what I'm saying?), who often make use of stock armor.

Yet modders are able to create new meshes and textures for their own stuff without getting paid for their work.  Perhaps there isn't a toolset planned because they're worried that user mods will put their work to shame and make the companion armor DLCs I'm betting they have planned totally unnecessary.

That'd make sense if the DAO toolset actually offered those capabilities.

i just dont get it, maybe someone can explain it to me, whats the point of loot then if you cant really equip your party with it? im not that deep into the game but I already have a few upgrade for my companions and simply cant upgrade their gear? Whats the point of warrior plate if im playing a mage and i cant give it to my warrior? Just to sell it?

Another feature gone.

People are just grasping for reasons to defend this, every charcter would of had their own armour at the start, they could of even made special ones for them to buy.

Another feature the masses might not understand when hacking through the hoardes.

Dont worry, in DA3, if there is one, there will probably be no loot, you will just get money from corpses and just be able to upgrade 1 set of armor for yourself throughout the whole game.

I wasn't able to get the toolset to install on my PC (database installation problem, not the toolset itself), but there are plenty of mods that add armor with a unique look available.  The toolset doesn't allow the creation of those items by itself, but I'm not sure how you'd take the new meshes and textures and add them to game items without it.  Perhaps it's possible, I just don't know.
