I don't know about it feeling that for me with rivaling Anders. I mean unless you can be papercutted to death with his manifesto and strongly worded letter for you.
That said, I think that letter is one of my favorite things ever in the game.

When I rivalmance him I always run off to hug anders, because scary glowy elf is scary.

IIRC she was not referring to Anders specifically but the friend/rival system in general. Unless we're thinking of different comments.

And I don't even think the whole Justice merge was that bad necessarily...

That was my impression. If anything I'd think she was referring to Merrill, since Merrill seems like the closest thing to a clear-cut example of rivaling being better for her. Of course, that's up for debate as well I'm sure.
