I like Fenris.
I just don't like his swooners. <_<
It's like they're incapable of having conversation once they hear his voice.

That's exactly how I feel about it as well.  Squee has a place.   But 24/7 squee just isn't my thing.  That's a lot of soiled panties after all.

Completely agree. I love Fenris and have definitely squeed plenty, but I also enjoy critiquing and deconstructing him. To me, characters lose their interest once you start to see them as infallible or beyond reproach.

I feel the same way about Anders, and all the characters, really.

EDIT: Top of page picture fail! Sorry, y'all. :?

Haha, that's cool! I've never met anybody who resembles a DA2/DA:O - character.

But I once met an "assassin" on the bus. It was actually an old man, but the  ringfinger on his left hand was cut off exactly in the same height as Altair's. I couldn't help but giggle.

And one of my friends looks like a younger/teenage - version of my Shepard. Which is oddly amusing.

I love the NPC autonomy as well, and the way they develop their own lives over the course of years. I'm nervous that the amount of negative player reviews will dissuade them for doing similar things in future, because while DA2 wasn't perfect it also did a lot of things right.

I love that it felt more like I was taking part in a story, instead of "kill monsters, collect loot, upgrade gear, win game". I've been doing that for the last five years in WoW, a change is appreciated! I like that I can't always win, I like that I can screw up and I like that the NPCs will call me on it when I screw up - and that I can do the same to them. In that way they felt way more alive to me than the DA:O companions, and I really hope they keep pushing that sense of realism instead of going back to a system where everyone else's lives revolve around the PC.

It also frustrates the hell out of me when people claim that DA2 was made for "console kiddies" who lack any kind of discernment. Hi, I haven't owned any console since the Sega Master System was the gaming platform to have and I still like DA2's gameplay. So there. ಠ_ಠ

Gotta ask Anders for his bomb recipe.
I'm pretty sure it's more than urine, feces, and rocks.

My neighbor's dog is just having a great time out there barking at my dog, and my dog, in turn is barking right back. It's a symphony of yips (neighbor's dog) and RARFS (my dog).

I think his house could use a little touch of decimation.

If you have dog problems, I think Anders would just suggest you get a cat instead of give you the bomb recipe.

I've got two of those.
One of them is named Anders:
Image IPB

He eats food off of the counters. He knows how to open the fridge. He tears open the dog's food. He tears our screen and escapes outside. He eats food right off our plates...while we're eating. He follows me around all day. He also tends to jump onto my pant leg, hang on with his claws, and just ride around there for a half hour at a time.

I'd rather have the dog.

EDIT: (oh and did I mention that that bag of cat litter in the background, which was donated to us by my mother, was torn open and eaten the next day? He ate three mouthfuls and had to go to a vet to induce kitty litter vomiting. Dumb as a box of rocks, this kitten. :pinched:

There is a corn based kitty litter that is safe for cats to eat. We used to use it, but eventually swapped to regular litter. It took awhile to teach one of our cats that regular litter was for potty time and not play time. Luckily the oldest cat eventually sat her down and showed her.

And thus why we get to one of the reasons I love this thread.  Anders' flaws are not only spoken about but thoroughly embraced.

And well...Anders is also the prettiest hobo on the block, so that doesn't hurt either.

That's...quite an image!

But seriously...I tried to converse last night, but some wouldn't converse back. T_T

*flails*

But that is neither here nor there–– um, sorry to interrupt the Anders discussion!  Have at it and I will go back to lurking. ^_^

Side note --- anyone else get the utter urge to grab Anders and SCRUB HIM?

Hawke: Anders, if you're going to be living here and TOUCHING ME all the time, you need a bath.

Janders: No! Baths are a waist of time. There is an injustice to right!

Hawke: Shut up Justice. *throws anders in bathtub.*

Nahhh.
Who cares if he smells like the sewers?
I imagine Hawke doesn't smell pretty either...probably like blood, sweat, and dirt.

I think one of the things I liked most about companion autonomy is that it also allowed companions to have relationships with each other. It was fun to go talk to a companion and catch them in the middle of hanging out with a different companion. Not to mention, that this allowed for tiny extra Anders cut scenes. I really loved seeing him telling Varric about some of his past adventures. Granted, I would have liked that scene all the more if he hadn't totally brushed off Hawke at the end of it. <_<

It was just an extra layer of realism. In ME2 for example, I sometimes just felt like all of my companions were rooted to one spot and never interracted with each other outside of the occassional cat fight.

Edit to say that I usually felt more like my Hawke needed a bath. After a battle Anders would be sparkly clean and she would be entirely covered in blood. I figure 2H warrior Hawke was just as mucha  big pile of stink as Anders ever was, and that's without her living in the sewers. That said, I wouldn't say no to watching the two of them bathe each other. :bandit:

Oh so totally this.  I absolutely love that there are relationships there between the companions independent of Hawke.  Hearing Fenris and Donnic played cards, for example, and didn't tell Aveline about it because she was a 'sore loser' filled me with so much glee.   I could just picture those two sitting there playing cards like manly men and saying nothing to each other the whole time and believing that was one of the best nights of their lives.

Or Varric watching out for Anders?

Really, there are a ton of examples.   They all added a depth there that was not present in other games where it seemed like the companions didn't so much as go pee without the OC there to give them a wipe or a final shake.

Yay for companions getting to know eachother =) that's is a major plus for me. Hope they keep it in the next game and that ME3 will use it as well. Always feelt that Garrus and Tali had been working in the same crew on two ships. They should at least say hi sometime.

Wonder if there is going to be any Anders in the next game? Perhaps DA3 will follow the outside world, you know all the earth-shattering things that the wardens hinted at by the end of Act 2. Guess we will just have to wait and see =)

All of this. Made it feel like Hawke was just one of them, a member of their circle of friends (or not-friends) that they occasionally looked to for a bit of extra help, rather than a Leader of Men and Saviour of All like the Warden. Hawke's just, like, this guy, y'know? Luckier than some, sure, and a talented fighter, but not really anything special on the surface. He's basically Arthur Dent with more punching.
