I do wonder how much they were relying on players' goodwill from Awakening to shape their opinion on Anders for the first couple of Acts. An amusing but shallow guy that was popular with women, so obviously it wouldn't be too bad having him along.
And then you get his banter and it's just...
*snip mages, mages, mages, JUSTICE, JUSTICE*
I think it would have been nice if his party banter was generally more light hearted in Act 1. He does joke a lot more earlier in the game than he does later, but it doesn't change the fact that most of his banter is still about mages. So, have a slightly more gradual transition from Awakening Anders to DA2 Anders. Then maybe more people would have warmed up to him enough earlier in the game to feel a bit more sympathetic in the game.
I completely agree with this. It was perfectly understandable for the character to become so single-minded about the mage/templar issue over the course of the game, but it would have been easier to feel the tragedy and sympathize with him if we'd seen more of his pre-obsession self in DA2.
The difference in personality between Awakening combined with the change in voice actor and appearance made it really difficult for me to transfer my fondness for Awakening Anders to DA2 Anders on my first playthrough. After everything played out and I thought it all through, I ultimately decided that the character was great, he finally felt real and I finally felt sympathy (I should probably be ashamed to say) when the debris started flying and I found myself facing the choice of whether to kill him or not. But... it would have been nice to feel that sympathy as I watched him go downhill too, not just when he hit the bottom. I saw the development of his character over the course of DA2 much more clearly on the second playthrough, but on the first... that massive shift in personality was so jarring that he just felt like a different person that the game kept insisting was Anders, but didn't convinced me was Anders until the end.
I think he should have been more like his old self for at least the first bit of Act 1. If he had already merged with Justice but not yet corrupted him when you first met them, it would have felt more smooth and convincing. If the quest with Karl happened later in Act 1 and twisted Justice after you'd already gotten to know Anders' character a bit the whole thing would have felt a lot more tragic and easier to swallow. It also wouldn't have been so odd that someone who is possessed would confide in you about it. Having already travelled with you a bit he would have reason to trust you (either your kindness or your pragmatism), and not fear that you might be more inclined to murder him and take his maps than invite him along for the party.
Edit: For some reason the forum introduced a bunch of line breaks that could not be tolerated.
