Hawke is The Ishmael.

I am of the opinion that Anders is very much the main character of the story, but it really worked much better with an outside perspective. Getting into his head would be difficult for a roleplaying game, especially since so much of his character is built off the fact he isn't in complete control of himself. His character arc is definitely one that had to be spectated.

I presume that the devs knew most people would refuse to make the same choices or would ****** and moan about being forced to do so (as if they aren't now).  They would have had to tell the story in so one-sided a way to get people to the point where they'd actually blow up the Chantry that it would totally have broken the heart of it.

I think showing both the explosion of blood mage use and the abuses the Templars perpetrated on all of the mages made that choice something much more interesting and personal to people.  I don't think that would have happened if the story had been told from Anders's perspective.

I realize I'm in the minority, but I sometimes find my Hawke wanting to kill Anders out of love. Not because I'm angry about what he did to the world, or even to Hawke, but to end his suffering.

However, the cold murderknife in the back doesn't sit right with that scenario. Ugh. Just did this in a playthrough and I'm still upset by it.

No, i know what you mean. Ultimately though, I'm just too weak to do it, even though I think it would be better for everyone. Maybe it's like you said, the murderknife aspect, and the implication in that scene that you're just punishing him for his actions. A mercy alternative would be nice. But I probably still wouldn't be able to do it. :P

I admit, I killed him in my siding with Templars playthrough.  My Hawke wasn't gleeful but he was massively angry.  I was yelling 'I'm so sorry!!' at the screen, though.[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/unsure.png[/smilie]

I also took a cap of the murderknife in hand and posted it on my wow guild's forums with the line 'I hope you're happy now.' as they'd been giving me grief for the entire playthrough over me not being able to do it.  Heartless sods said I'd photoshopped it. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/angry.png[/smilie]

Yeah. My Hawke isn't gonna be angry just sad. At that point he doesn't consider Anders human anymore.

Ouch. Well at least you know you didn't shop it. Ask them do they want a youtube vid or something?

Edit: I don't see Anders as the main character. I think the whole game has no main character. Not really. Which is probably partly why I dislike. I'm following Hawke around but he doesn't really do anything other than react. Which gets kind of bleh for me after a while.

Bravo for not clicking the star option, in the interests of drama and roleplaying!  We all know good writing comes from pain, right? ;)  The last line in that chapter gets me.  Can't resist the tabbies.  I lose all objectivity!  When writing critique, I must remember to ignore all the parts with cats. XD

I felt so bad not clicking it, since I always did before. But this was my canon Drama!PT, and I needed MOAR PAIN from Anders as inspiration.

Haha; the cat actually has meaning (if you've read the previous chapter) ;D

Oh Miri, that's wonderful!

I possibly shouldn't have strayed from the sanctum of this thread. But the image of Elthina riding the Chantry door like a surfboard did tickle me. Sort of like the Queen speaking street.

Some people really are just vitriolic in their hatred of Anders. I just don't understand how anyone could feel that about anything ever. *sigh*

Well it's not that hard to hate someone to the point of wanting to kill them it's a human thing after all but for me Anders is not real/not worth it so I have no real hatred for him.

Hmmm... So Fenris, due to being emotionally unstable, is just as controlled by his hate as Anders is by Justice?  Interesting idea.  I think it has some merit.[/quote]

I think there is a definite parallel. Fenris basically admits as much several times. "It's a sickness, this hate. This dark growth inside me that I can't ever get rid of, and they put it there!"

That said, I think Fenris has a better chance of ultimately overcoming his hate than Anders has of controlling Justice.
[/quote]

I am starting to believe that Justice is a part of Anders, and Anders may eventually succumb to the spirit...or demon. That's why I am hoping for a DLC that gives absolute proof that Justice can, or cannot ever be separated from Anders. If it was blood magic that binded Justice to this world, it must be blood magic that can put him back into the Fade.

Poor Anders. Getting coldly stabbed in the back with the murder knife.

Then again. Could be worse. We could've had to slit his throat.

Is it just me or do a lot of the people who spew all this hate for certain NPC's, actually care about other NPC's opinions on their Hawkes? And by other NPC's I mean the Chantry, The Mages, The Templars, and general Kirkwall Populace, but mostly the bolded, because half the quests you do in Kirkwall can have a totally negative effect on Kirkwall Populace as well (I.e slavers, demon and bloodmage deals, outright killing for the Lulz). I guess this is just another effect of wanting to be the Paragon with Shining Blue Wings Godly Hero?

My Hawke in the end of Act 3 was more concerned with saving her sister, saving the mages, and when out of Kirkwall, beating the living hell out of Anders for not letting her in on it.

I think a lot of people expected DA2 to be more like Origins or even Mass Effect, where you could almost always Take a Third Option, make everyone happy, and keep your hands clean.  Not so in DA2; they really hammered home the sadistic choices this time around.  Hawke is a protagonist, but s/he is hardly a hero; if anything, Hawke is a catalyst for most of the awful stuff that happens.

Personally, I liked that, but I can see how it could be very frustrating if you went into DA2 expecting to play a more traditional BioWare protagonist.

This is a bit late but...

People want to murder Bethany? Why? Poor girl. At worst she's boring. Certainly not a murderable offense. Plus, the whole point of Bethany is to kick in your protective instincts.

Poor Beth. I can understand killing Anders (even if I don't quite get the levels of pure hatred) but Bethany. D: I wuv her. She kind of reminds me of my sister.

Because they play video games just to find someone to hate, obviously.

I kind of picture my Hawkes doing that. Hugging Anders from the back and sliting his throat. The backstab is just to impersonal and it makes me go bleh. Hawke's not backstabbing (or betraying) Anders in anyway and the scene just gives me that vibe. I would've prefered a Shiala like scene where she kneels with her hands on the back of her head and Hawke either beheads him or uses a spell to do that electicity murder chop (like with Feyrniel.)

Apparently they do. Don't know why though:

Dunizel wrote...

But seriously...I went to check the thread that "inspired" this, and someone would have even killed Bethany,
resurrect her with a spirit, and kill her all over again in different ways, as a public show in Kirkwall?
What did Bethany do...maybe you didn't like her, but hate her is...I don't know, impossible, in one act
o.O She doesn't say or do anything so strong to provoke such hate.

Some people...I don't even want to know them from AFAR.

The terrorism thing confuses me.
I think people try to link it to real world scenarios too much, like making the Chantry a church and Anders as an example of an extremist bomber.

People forget that most revolutions don't happen without lots of people- innocent people too- being killed.
