Wonder if we count as being in a rivalry? Hm...probably not.

Some people really are just vitriolic in their hatred of Anders. I just don't understand how anyone could feel that about anything ever. *sigh*
I've had people do some pretty godawful things to me, but I wouldn't say I hate any of them. Perhaps that's why I can't understand it in relation to a fictional character.
Maybe it's because they're fictional character that people feel freer to express such hatred, though. It would be pretty alarming to hear the kind of vitriol in real life that gets levelled at a lot of these characters, but here you can kind of handwave it as petty whackiness and go about your business. Maybe it's catharsis? Who knows.
Plus there's the anonymity of the internet lowering their inhibitions, which Penny Arcade summed up best.

Poor Beth. I can understand killing Anders (even if I don't quite get the levels of pure hatred) but Bethany. D: I wuv her. She kind of reminds me of my sister.
Whut?! Why would anyone want to murder Bethany?
I go cry for a little.
This is bad enough.
Worst part is she just accepts it. She's not even angry.![]()
Oh, UGH. That is right up there with the video of giving Fenris to Danarius in terms of things I wish I could unsee.
Bethany is nothing like my little sister but she definately pushes my 'big sister' buttons. Brb, crying.

I'm wallowing in the middle of my fic but I've already written that scene. And, yes, it's done with love and deep regret. Hawke knows that Anders wants out, that he isn't looking for martyrdom but release, and that giving it to him is the last act she can perform as his friend. So she does.autumnyte wrote...
I realize I'm in the minority, but I sometimes find my Hawke wanting to kill Anders out of love. Not because I'm angry about what he did to the world, or even to Hawke, but to end his suffering.
However, the cold murderknife in the back doesn't sit right with that scenario. Ugh. Just did this in a playthrough and I'm still upset by it.
But she doesn't do the back-stab-murder-knife thing. That just didn't make any sense to me. If I'm going to kill a possessed freaking healer I'm going to make damned sure he's dead no matter my motivations.

I can't write that scene.
I mean, my fanfics usually depress me with angst, anyway, but I just can't write it.
First of all, I always spare him.
Second of all, if I were to kill him it would not be out of anger...so I'd want to look directly at him while I did it, I'd want to explain myself.

I think the problem with separating Justice and Anders after the events of DA2 would be the damage done to Anders' psyche. My guess is that it would be a pretty severe to fatal shock to his system at worse, and deeply traumatic at best.
And this is assuming that Justice will go. A rivaled Anders who sided with the templars would be as much of the Enemy as Meredith ever was. Justice might dig in and take Anders down with him if he thinks that Anders will be a tool for "injustice" without him.
Whyyyyyy did I watch that Bethany video? *cries*
I read somewhere that a person's soul is more "sensative" to possession after the demon is banished. But it isn't just about Anders, it's about Justice as well; I hate it that all he wanted to do was good, yet his duty has corrupted him. But there is the concern of what it would do to Anders. I don't think it would do anything, but maybe that's wishful thinking - Connor was fine after being possessed, but the demon was within the Fade - the consequences may be different if a spirit is within a person physically.

I don't know, maybe some people are just naturally predisposed to default to ass-hattery.
Personally I wish real life was more like the internet and every time I wanted to make a point I could just pull an amusing and somehow relevant image out of my pocket and then skip away satisfied.

WHAT?
I am in LOVE with Anders. I want to have pixel-mage-babies with him, so we can drink pixel coffee in the morning and talk about our pixelated lives together.
Maybe kill a few pixelated templars and blow up a few pixelated Chantries.
