I don't think there's anyone who denies Anders did a ****ty thing.

It was reprehensible, sure, but I understand him, and it makes him a more interesting character. I'm not sure why anyone needs to justify his actions to like him as a character.

Oh I have seen people try and boy they are stupid.

What I understand even less is why people feel the need to insult others for daring to hold different opinions.

WHAT?
I am in LOVE with Anders. I want to have pixel-mage-babies with him, so we can drink pixel coffee in the morning and talk about our pixelated lives together.

Maybe kill a few pixelated templars and blow up a few pixelated Chantries.

This would be pretty epic. I'd like to think that would mean, whenever I found it necessary in a conversation, Swanders would pop into existance. Then we could dance off and talk about kittens.

I just can't see Anders with babies. Changing diapers would be unjust.

Yup, this. Very much so. Also, the person you were making the point to would go:  Which would be endlessly hilarious!

Hmm, speaking of discussion, the thread is getting debate-y at a time I should be sleeping, so much as I would like to join in, I'll have to take my leave.

I do wonder how much they were relying on players' goodwill from Awakening to shape their opinion on Anders for the first couple of Acts. An amusing but shallow guy that was popular with women, so obviously it wouldn't be too bad having him along.

And then you get his banter and it's just...
*snip mages, mages, mages, JUSTICE, JUSTICE*

I love the man, but it's sad when I'm on Varric and Izzy's side during their Act III banter with him.

I think it would have been nice if his party banter was generally more light hearted in Act 1. He does joke a lot more earlier in the game than he does later, but it doesn't change the fact that most of his banter is still about mages. So, have a slightly more gradual transition from Awakening Anders to DA2 Anders. Then maybe more people would have warmed up to him enough earlier in the game to feel a bit more sympathetic in the game.

I dunno. I'm the wrong person to even try to discuss this because I loved it every time he talked about mages. I think there is something wrong with my head, honestly.

By the time DA2 starts, Anders is no longer the Anders from Awakening; he's already merged with Justice. He's just more balanced between Anders/Justice at the beginning. I'm not sure making him more like he was in Awakening during Act 1 would be true to his [new] character (even if the juxtaposition between Acts 1 and 3 might be more tragic).

(Sorry to drag out this convo from a few hours ago, but this is something I've been thinking about.)

No, I understand that he's already a different person by the time you meet him in DA2 than he was in Awakening. I was just saying, since he does actually still joke sometimes in Act 1, it would have been nice to see a little more of that. I think a few posts after the one you quoted, I mentioned that Anders is pretty humorous if you have him around at just the right times, but it's easy to miss his humor if you don't have him all the time. Thus some people think he's completely different in DA2, but he's not. He has evolved as a character.

So, as I said, I'm not the best at arguing this, but I think it would have been nice to have a slightly more gradual transition. Which is not at all to say he should have started DA2 acting like he did in Awakening. Just that it might have been nice if there was a way that more people could see he did still retain some of his old snark. I don't know how this would have been accomplished, but it seems like a lot of people miss it for some reason.

Anyhoo, sorry if I'm rambly. It's past time I should be asleep.

I break into your conversation to give you this.
And this, which made me explode in laughter.

This is exactly what I needed after I saw the Bethany's video...
Seriously, why even give this option? If I think about RL, who would say "sure, kill my sister/brother".
I don't think it makes sense at all, what kind oh Hawke could do that, she is like your only family left, she didn't do anything wrong, maybe you have just killed your lover...but sure, go on Meredith, kill my sister. When I played the templar ending and I saw the option I was ready to kill Meredith right there.

I can't kill Grace, I don't have a stupid option for that, but I have the option to let Meredith kill my sister as if I don't even care?

/end of rant

Speaking of options, I still demand the *punch Anders* when he is sitting on his box.

Leave the strawmen at home, kids. Disliking someone for being a dick to you and insulting someone for having an opinion about the actions of a fictional video game character are not the same thing, especially when it's one as steeped in moral ambiguity as the destruction of the chantry was. It certainly wouldn't be the first time history justifies an act that would by any standard be considered abhorrent at the time it occurred, and it's definitely something that can be legitimately debated without being "stupid".

Pauldrons.  Google the Varric / Anders banter about feather pauldrons and tragic, doomed heroes.  Have Kleenex handy.

edit: Google is my friend. :)

  • Anders: What?
  • Varric: Just wondering if the feathered pauldrons are an essential part of the moody rebel mage persona.
  • Anders: What are you talking about?
  • Varric: I'm working on an epic poem about a hopelessly
romantic apostate waging an epic struggle against forces he can't
    possibly defeat.
  • Anders: What do you mean, “can't possibly defeat?”
  • Varric: Well, it's not a good story unless the hero dies.

Varric calls them pauldrons, although that term is traditionally used to refer to plate armor. Capelet or bolero fit description-wise but they sound really girly.

'd on the pauldrons.

I don't see the blowing up the Chantry as ambiguous at all honestly.

Anders might believe he had good reasons for doing it but the action itself is pretty clear.

That might just be me though. It's pretty clear cut. He blew up the Chantry to give someone insane a free pass to start a massacre on the *hopes* that it would provoke a war.

Maybe if Hawke's friends with Anders one might get the sense he expected Hawke to help with the mages but that would only get Hawke in danger as well. He was also expecting to be killed so he can't even help with his so called resistance. Just expects to be lauded as a martyr for mage freedom.
I can't see that action in a good light. Heck the more I think about it the uglier it gets and the angrier I get at Anders.

That said it is just my interpretation so...*shrugs*

Edit: And calling someone stupid is a fast way to get yourself ignored or get the debate railroaded. It's best not to even say anything like that. It's rude and counterproductive especially if you're trying to get someone to see your POV.

* applauds the defense of legitimate debate, gives cookies *

I can easily respect those who disagree with me.  Can't respect someone who may share my views, but calls those who disagree "stupid".  (Unless they really are collossaly stupid, but I've not seen that in the Anders thread.)

For some reason, I'm now thinking of the Arishok.  The Arishok calmly stating "You are a worthy adversary" makes fangirls swoon.  The Arishok saying "U r so stupid!!11!!!!!1!!!", just not the same.  Too bad the Qun doesn't allow debate nor dissent.

edit:
@Ryzaki - It's not just you.  Anders probably gets more criticism, of the thoughtful not-knee-jerk variety, in this thread, than he does in the "die Anders die" threads.  Even his most ardent supporters criticize him.  Then we get accused of being crazy fangirls who forgive him because he's cute.  I say we rise up, write a manifesto, and then stick it in all the other threads. ;)  (I kid.  Spamming is bad.)
