pointing out the demon and saying "that's a demon. they lie and want to take over your body" should be fairly effective. the rest of the mages lives practically are harrowings, so helping them might be better?

It's pretty much headcanon for me now that Anders' real name is Frederick

He's probably been called Anders long enough that it's more his name than his "real" name.

He probably figured he liked the name Anders more than his real name.

I mean really, I think it's pretty awesome (mainly because it reminds me of Xander which is one of my favourite names. Safe to say my M!Diplomatic!Rogue!Hawke named Xander who romanced Anders had some interesting things to say in bed).

Regarding Anders' name, I think largely he's trying to forget his life before the Circle. He talks about being ripped away from his parents, about the templars threatening to harm them if they asked about him. I imagine those memories are painful, so the new name is a way to distance himself from that. But maybe that's just my own head-canon, reinforced by the fanfic I'm writing.

When he was first revealed, the name Anders reminded me of the (frequently NSFW) webcomic Anders Loves Maria, which remains one of the more wonderful and heartbreaking things I have ever had the pleasure to get caught up in.

So...fitting, really.

I'm not sure how much sense that makes to me. I mean, it makes sense that he'd want to get away from his past, but the name is a constant reminder of where he's from, so I don't see it helping very much toward that goal.

Yes, but wasn't the name given to him by someone else? (Or maybe I just read that somewhere else and added it to my fanon. It's happened before.) You don't get to choose your name, after all.

The way I think of it is like joining the army. I dated someone who enlisted because it was that or go to jail. He had a bad home life, and the army was like a second chance to him. Pretty much everyone in the unit gets nicknames. His was Texas on account of his accent and where he came from. But he still liked being called Texas more than his real name. Even though it had some link to his past, it wasn't the same as the person he'd been. I know it's not the same as being taken forcibly from his home, though, so make of it what you will.

it actually does make sense. Still i wish he told us his real name. But mages in general are quite secretive.

Completely unrelated, but I'm currently fighting with Anders and Hawke to write fanfic as an offering to the masses of DA2 fangirls/fanboys out there. And also playing around with the movie quote generator. You get some hilarious moments there! This one nicely sums up my current feelings:

"I am the author. You are the Anders. I outrank you!"

And, in relation to the "mooning" mentioned at some point in the past of this awesomely fantastic topic:

"That's no moon. That's an Anders!"

Or Sebastian:

"I'll get you, my pretty, and your little Anders too!"

And I'll stop with the crazy now XD

Under the Andefels codex it says it's people are known as Anders. Must be weird for Woolsey in Awakenings since she is also from the Anderfels

Ah, good morning Anders thread. I see the debate picked up just after I finally went to sleep, died while I was asleep, turned to sparklefingers, and now we have returned to Frederick. Or perhaps Friedrich.

I don't have a problem with Anders not sharing his real name with Hawke. There are plenty of people who hate their names and then go forever after by an assumed name, even with their SO. That being said, who's to say he didn't tell Hawke what his name was (outside of what we saw in game)? Maybe Hawke was just nice enough not to bring it up again in public and kept referring to him as Anders because that was the name she really knew him by.

Uh, has anybody defeated the Arishok as an archer here?
I'm rather nervous about the upcoming battle. >_>

He's stun resistant and runs at the same speed as you. It's a colossal chore as an archer.

I was desperate after two tries and I had to call my group. Duel was impossible for me, I didn't even see a chance...with other classes maybe I died, but there was a fight at least...with the archer...I felt useless.

But from what Anders hinted at, Justice wouldn't necessarily die if Anders died.  He'd probably just find another body to inhabit, which is probably why Anders hoped that if he did die that it would be his old friend coming out of him and not the Spirit of Vengence.

That is actually a very terrifying thought but has interesting possibility because Justice would not only be carrying memories of Kristoff but also the memories of Anders.

I tell you, Justice/Vengeance moved to Hawke. (That would be interesting)

I agree with whoever said that everyone potentially has magic. It comes from the Fade, and as we know everyone has access to the Fade, the only difference is that mages have a stronger connection and can access it even while not sleeping. I even assume many have magic gifts that are so weak they probably don't even realize it.
I always thought children where taken to the Circle, or recognized as mages, when somehow their powers at young age went out of control. I think people with weak powers might actually never see them at all, especially if not trained in magic.
Maybe Sandal just foreshadowed that one day the Veil will be so thin that everyone would be able to use magic, because everyone in fact can.

I tend to think that Anders doesn't use his real name because that's just not who he is anymore, and that it has too many painful memories attached- you know, with the being torn away from his mother an all.

But the thought of him telling Hawke his name secretly is just cute. Imagine the bedroom talk.<3

You had me at 'Anders'. (HAH!)

Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty Isabela.

Well, a Merrill's a Merrill, but they call it 'le Merrill'.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a Fenris.

I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Sebastian is away.

I see dead Varric.

I ate his Carver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

Madness? This is Bethany!

I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old Aveline for dinner.

Some of these are really suitable. Others not so much. The site has some creepy caniballistic tendencies D:

i found the archer/arishok battle okay. pinning shot does work on him, just not all the time. vendetta and assassinate, plus stealth when you're hurt.
when i run past him to get the whirlwind attack it makes me feel like i'm not simply running away!!
