There's power in blood in this game even if you're not a mage. Templars and phylacteries come to mind as well.

But they have to be using some sort of magic to at least give the vials of blood the ability to track a mage, and preserve the blood. Otherwise it would just be an old, degraded, and utterly useless vial of dried up blood.

Then there is the templars "dispel magic" ability. You have to be able to do magic to dispel magic.

I think it had more to do with Varric demanding his be the most lovingly detailed package in the game. Everyone else gets smooth crotches or obscuring robes.

And I'm going against the natural order of things to say that he's probably average. However he strikes me as being very, very creative and way more attentive to details than most.

Also, amazing hands. But, most also, magic.
