mages are by some considered weapons to use in a war. the spells they learn can reflect that

Hawke: By the Maker if you three don't shut up, I will turn us around and head back to Kirkwall!  Anders I am sleeping with an abomination so if I want to help Merrill slit her wrists I will! And fenris if you don't stop brooding your face will get stuck like that!

LOL.  It reminds me of the banter between Merrill and Aveline where Merrill talks about the Keeper telling them to stop pulling hair.  Hawke was so the big sister/mom figure in my game, telling everyone to STFU before she singed their pants with lightning.

Though Seb, Fen, and Anders are by far the worst combo.

Templars are BUILT to fight mages - the fact that Hawke can stand against them is because she/he is backed up by a lot of people who aren't.

I went into a battle with just mage!Hawke and Anders against a bunch of Templars once. DEAD in two seconds flat. And yeah, I know that game mechanics are different to story mechanics, but Templars ARE supposed to be able to neutralize mages effectively, otherwise the circle would have rebelled a long time ago - ULDRED would have won.

Natale Hawke was used to the brooding and the sniping; Carver is her brother, after all.  I think the only point at which any of them would've been in danger of really grievous bodily harm was when Seb was talking to Fenris about turning Anders & Merrill over to the templars <_<

Seb, ILU, but you're a dumb-dumb.  How could he possibly thought Hawke wouldn't kick his ass for that?  At least Fen talked some sense into him.

No one ever answered my serious question way earlier so maybe no one knows, but how do Templars make mages tranquil anyway? How come mages haven't figured out how to do the same thing to non-mages?

Dragon Age Wiki mentions a lyrium brand.

You know I felt like this too, but then I started to think about how much the mages were allowed to learn. There is of course free study, but a place that has a clampdown on the mages by the chantry may have not allowed the mages to learn how to cast protective and/or combat spells. It's just something I think about now and again. The worse part of dragon age is we don't really know much about the circle life. I mean is there a class called Defending yourself against agressors 101? Or Casting Fire Spells to Kill Instead of Lighting Your Fire 201? I'm talking about the tower mages purely not the ones who have escaped and seem to be everywhere all the time. Is it possible that the sheltered life in the tower made the shock of being attacked something that they were unable to process/handle? Also we can not forget that the templars had been searching out troublemakers and making them tranquil. Oops sorry. Anders may have been able to help some mages to learn to defend themselves but he couldn't help those he couldn't reach. See that I turned it back to Anders. Sneaky me! LOL

Hm I'm not sure. Because a lot of the mages (and even the Warden mage) seem to be taught attack spells and defensive spells. Mages are drafted into the armies as needed. The mages you fight in the circle do know attackspells (yes it's a game mechanic but even Uldred was using some lightening atack in the cutscene). You see Orsino throwing around fireballs and the mages that defened Orsion fought to the death trying to protect him. I'm pretty sure they know attack spells.

I doubt there would be classes like that but they are taught to control their magic. So I can see them learning how to use shields how to make sure the fire they use isn't too powerful. (It's a lot harder to control something than to simply let loose). Even in Origins you have mages sparring each other (one of the teachers is tossing fireballs at a appretenice with arcane shield up a weak fireball (on purpose so not to kill the student).

Though what Grace says about the mages staffs and the like being taken away don't make sense with the cutscene where it seems everyone has their staff and equipment. She also mentions how their grimoires were taken (I'm guessing spell books?). I have a hard time as seeing having basic training with their powers would be seen as trouble making. (Or maybe I'm just too used to fantasy where mages have magical outbusts if they don't know how to control their powers).

Then of course is the fact that in said cutscene they start using attack magic after the templars are ontop of them.  You then see them using cone of cold and fireball and the templars have to stop and dispell their magic.

And of course dispel magic with a templar only seems to affect the radius close to them. They can use holy smite but it's like casting a spell, leaves you vulnerable for a few seconds. From a distance the mages could've spammed them with spells and forced the templars on the defensive. They can *resist* magical attacks well not completely nullify them (not without using that ability of theirs). They can drain mana but I have a feeling they need to be close to do that. (At least Meredith needed to be right on top of the Saaerbas before she could stop its attack.)

As for Anders. Seeing as he was perfectly okay with dying and leaving them to dry I doubt he thought about them period other than as a furthering of his goal.

I got that on my mage playthrough, I want to turn around and say "You do realize I am standing right here?"

Also I had Bethany, as I was warrior Hawke, so she was not prepared for the crap those boys were putting her through.  One Carver is alright...but three? Two angsty and one a complete Alter boy? There was no preparing for that hell.

They use a lyrium brand to cut off the mage's connection to the Fade.  That's all we know.  Also, killing someone in the Fade had the same effect on Feynriel, though the lore there is very inconsistent since you can kill your other party members in the Fade without affecting them in the physical world.

I imagine the templars keep a pretty tight leash on their secrets, especially when it comes to Tranquilling mages.  In addition, mages are the only ones with a connection to the Fade worth disrupting.  I wonder if the Rite of Tranquility would even work on a normal person.

i think of the ritual for saving connor. lyrium powered, not blood. i don' think there is a real description, but clearly someone has to be sent into the fade, and probably a mage because of that ritual. the circle is a bit lacking in the ways of sending mundane folks across

Lyrium made Meredith go crazy(er) and Bartram go nuts. Looks like it has the opposite effect on normal people.

Basically (In DA2) without the use of blood magic or being possessed by a demon mages don't stand a chance against templars. What kind of templars would they be if they couldn't rush a pike twirling mage and take him down while blocking his mage powers and draining him of mana?

I was upset about not being able to be an arcane warrior. Like I really wanted to try to fight off a shield and sword with my staff or anybody with a bigger blade.  Point in fact, is in the fade when Fenris turns against my mage pc he took down Anders first and then headed for my mage pc and I was done for in no time flat; and he's not even a bloody templar!

He wanted to die to give the people he killed justice. When you offer him his life HE WANTS TO GO AND HELP THE MAGES. He just doesn't think you're going to let him live, because what he did he sees as a crime and he deserves to be punished. Given the chance to see the thing through he LEAPS on it.

Mmm...that may just be due to the idol's unique properties.  Remember that Bartrand's a dwarf; they live underground with the stuff in the rocks, and evolved a resistance to it.  It had to be some pretty potent lyrium to addle his brains.  And Meredith's a templar; she's been exposed to normal lyrium her whole life too.

Since the Rite of Tranquility directly severs the connection of a mage to the Fade, it should work on anyone except a dwarf who have no connection to the Fade.

Ha! when fenris turned against magehawke and anders he murdered us in one fell swoop! swooping is bad. ^_^
hope he committed suicide afterwards.
why is hawke the only one to die? shouldn't she wake up with a massive "you fail" emblazed on her forehead?

edit; avoid mighty blow at all costs
