A bit of an off topic question for the thread's resident artists about software you use... I'm getting back to painting and going the digital way this time around. Quite happy with ArtRage 3, but I got a complementary Photoshop Elements 8 with my tablet and been thinking about upgrading. What's the general quick opinion in the topic, is it worth upgrading to the full version or is Elements enough, for example, the kind of work you do?
I love ArtRage. For its price it has the best, yes I'm telling you, the best simulation or real brushes and paper and workspace. Which at the same time is its downside, because you have really to paint to make it work at his best. I adore it for sketches, but then for the coloring I usually switch to Photoshop.
I had PS Elements in bundle with my tablet aswell, I had to upgrade it. There were so many useful things I couldn't do. It is fine for image and photo manipulation and fixes, but for drawing and painting the full version is better.
I am trying Painter 11 from a friend in these days, I'm still not sure how I feel about it, it has some real good natural brushes though...but I can hardly use it on my pc because just using the eraser it slows down to a crawl, and well, it is not easy to draw in those conditions. PS5 runs better...
That said, since I read you are "going digital" now...be prepared for some stress >.< I am still trying to "go digital", it takes much more work than I thought...at least for me. I still have the feeling that whatever I do, I could have done it faster and better with traditional means. And i know it is true for now...I am still learning :x
