After my Warden and he had a tumble, they became best friends.
And that makes me realize something.
In DAII, it actually felt like the companions where friends or rivals with Hawke, rather than just being companions. I never really had strong ties to the Origins companions save for Alistair who my Warden romanced. She didn't really have a "BFF" though, unlike Hawke and Varric.
I like to think Zevran was my Warden's BFF though. He stayed in Denerim with her, after all. :/

I know what you mean. Plus, there was never really any incentive for me to go and talk to certain party members in DAO- Mainly Leliana /D but that's because she annoyed my canon Warden so much.
Morrigan was my canon Warden's BFF- they were so similar it was scary.
I find in DA2 the characters, I dunno, have more depth? It's difficult to explain why I find them better, I just do p:

it's some great voice acting! he sounds so carefree there... poor anders.

I think what gives the DAII companions a little more life is what happens off camera. They all have their own lives, doing their own things. They help out Hawke when they can, but they aren't just sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting on his/her hand on foot.
That said, I thought the DAII romances needed more. Alistair's romance was full of many, many things, and was awesome.
I think the game itself needed more dialogue. I loved just randomly talking to my companions in DA:O.

I would be surprised if Cullen isn't in DA3 to be honest. They took the time to develop and use the character in two games...so I really think we will see more of him.

ah, so basicly i just need to read more fan ficion to fill in the gaps!
In my head Anders spent the first 3 year gap teaching Hawke how to do healing magic. She may have done it just to get in his pants though.

I felt that Hawke and his companions were closer friends than the Warden and hers. It might have something to do with the fact that I could never connect with my Warden who was my vehicle for interacting with the other characters (creep bioware face... *shudders). And also the whole let's play 20 questions with this NPC until I exhaust all dialogue options right before we hit Lothering kinda made it pointless for me to speak with the NPCs later in the game.
