I find many compaions can be annoying at some point.

The only companions I never found annoying at some point were Varric and Aveline. And Bethany, but I just thought she was boring. I can let Izzy off most of the time, but her constant flirting with Varric makes me jealous D:

You missed half the point. It's not the attractiveness of the character alone, but that she breaks stereotypes. The **** (Isabela) and the Maiden (Merrill) don't break stereotypes like the male LIs, especially Anders, did.

If you're going to call Isabela a "****" and Merrill a "maiden" but say Aveline breaks some kind of mold (she's the "tomboy") that just seems like arguing from a convenient standard.

They're all much more than that, and given a "stereotypical lesbian acceptable to ignorant straight males" I'd expect tomboy to be on the list, too.

They're not, they're both the "easy" option LI's for both games. The beauty of it though, is that there is so much more to both of them if you actually pursue their real romances.

Isabela is probably my second favorite romance option behind Anders. And I've not even actually done a playthrough where I seriously romance her. I keep meaning to, but I just can't bring myself to play the game atm.

I always thought she looked a bit androgynous, but not manly. I saw he more as my big sister that crushes boy's faces when they look at me funny.

The Tomboy isn't  on the list of "generally accepted sexy lesbian stereotypes". The Tomboy is usually for friendship only, because it's assumed that everyone wants lipstick lesbians only. Just look anywhere in popular media. Even the L-Word was full of lipstick lesbians with a few token butches. And BioWare didn't try if people would like the Tomboy as a girlfriend in DA2, either.

Is it too late to jump into the romance discussion?

Right, first of all, my boyfriend didn't romance anyone in Origins because he kept saying "what are my choices? The psycho-****, the nun and the spanish elf" and he kept whining about how the female characters were sort of stereotypical and not interesting at all.
So I do the DA2 demo and meet Aveline and the first thing that crossed my mind was "Yay finally a decent female love interest!" So it was slightly disappointing when it turned out you can't romance her =/ Maybe BW are worried a strong independant non stereotypical female will clash with Hawke? *shrug*

As for guys in DA2, I was originally part of the Fenris fandom - even from before we knew his name. Anders wasn't interesting to me at all at that point. But then I walked in the clinic and saw his little intro scene and that was that. I just couldn't LOOK at anyone else after, let alone TOUCH them.

I am currently doing a playthrough in which I will romance Fenris before Anders and it is SOOOO HARD! BUT the wall push scene is SO HOT. The thing is, when I see it, I dont think Fenris is hot, I think: I wish I could do that to Anders.

But anyway, after Alistair and Zevran I was wondering how Bioware would provoke the same emotional attachment, they couldn't use the virgin-royal-bastard and sexy-assasin again.
But man, did they surpass Origins! They gave us two incredibly sexy emotionally damaged individuals to have angsty desperate romances with. I underestimated the appeal of tragedy.

I miss Alistair's romance.
It was so simple and cute...(you know, then it got all difficult when his future kingship was brought into question), and he was so freaking adorable. I just wanted to snuggle him. 

Both male romance options in DA2 I just wanted to smack the **** out of after awhile. One is like "**** ALL MAGES" the other one is like, "FREE ALL MAGES....AND **** YOU FENRIS."
One is possessed, the other one can't let go of his past.
Meanwhile, I'm sitting there, holding the controller, like, "I just....want to snuggle Alistair."

Anyway, my general consensus is that I'm not the type who wants to drown myself in angst and argument all of the time. I like a little fluff with my angst, as well. And I didn't really get any of that. Sure, Anders goes all super-romantic on you, but because of the time jump, sometimes it didn't feel as genuine.
Even if you COULD sleep with Alistair a whole five seconds after meeting him (if you played your cards right).
