Thus Alistair and Anders are FOREVER ALONE and Garrus has Shepard, the Warden, and Hawke.

I'd probably be inclined to punch Sebastian in the dick if I knew him in real life, but I like him as a character. Characters that are perfectly agreeable all of the time are terribly boring.

But stabbing isn't funny. Punching is the kind of "I hate what you did, you ****!" without actually ending the friendship. Letting out some anger! Violence is good stress management!

I don't hate every character, but each one is annoying in their own way.
I hate the way Aveline ****es at me about everryythhinnnggg.
I hate how selfish Isabela acted.
I hate how SUPER-PRO-MAGE Anders is most of the time. And how he refuses to be budged from his position, even as blood mages throw corpses at us from every direction.
I hate how broody and suspicious Fenris is, to the point where he condones extortion, as long as a mage, or a parent of a mage, is suffering.
I hate how naive Merrill is about everything. That mirror HARMED people. I think it's okay to lose that bit of culture.

Varric's the only one I don't have a damn problem with.

I do.  We shouldn't really bash another character to promote Anders.  It's bad form.  After all, EVERYONE's bashing Anders everywhere.  Shouldn't we be better than that?

I bash Seb because ALL characters need a bit of ****ing bashing at some point.

Not saying it's because of Anders.... it's just unnessessary.

I'm going to have to try the rivalry path with Seb on my next playthrough then because, similar to YamiSnuffles, I don't hate him, I nothing him. He's just there on occasion, sometimes being helpful, other times being a bit preachy *shrugs* It's why I found it so amusing when Anders blew up the Chantry and he was demanding I kill him. My Hawke was like "Sorry, non-entity is asking me to kill the man I love? Is that right?"

See, my Hawke was like Seb's evil Obi-Wan.  It was so delicious watching her teach him to be more practical, more badass and ruthless, knowing that the two of them would end up hating each other by Act 3 and trying to kill each other post-game.

Ok that there just sealed the deal, I'm definitely trying rivalry with him next time

Yeah, I never considered my Amell friends with Jowan, but it seems the game decided that for us.

I figured he was just someone who thought Amell was his friend, and Amell imagined he was an irritating hanger-on that he/she couldn't get rid of because they're both stuck in the Circle.

I'd use the wiki as a guide.  It's surprisingly hard getting rivalry with him on quests; he's a dear and loves puppies and helping people and sunshine.  But pushing him toward Starkhaven in your dialogues will usually net a nice amount of rivalry.
