I bet this thread is the most active in the whole BW boards.

Also LOL I just noticed this on the first page

It's actually oddly suiting.

Ah, the return of Swanders. He is my finest creation. And, as someone said, having him at the start of the thread is kind of a great way to say, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."

Ew. Idiots in public places.
Like the guy I ordered my shake from at Mickey D's today. I ended up unloading my life story on him, I was so pissed.

Me: Can I have a chocolate shake, please?
Him: Soonestrawberryshakeokaypleasepulluptothefirstwindow.
Me: Wait...no. Chocolate. Chocolate shake.
Him: Chocolate sundae?
Me:......No. Chocolate shake.
Him: You have to speak up, I can't hear you.
Me: ......DUDE. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU! I HAVE FIFTEEN MINUTES BEFORE I HAVE TO HAUL MY ASS BACK TO class SO I CAN FINISH THIS DEGREE AND MAKE MY MOTHER HAPPY! AND YOU HAVE TEN ****ING SECONDS BEFORE I START SMASHING ****!

Me: Thank you.

Image IPB this thread so much. Never did I think leanring new vernacular would be so much fun, but I can't remember my life before shameboners, frusturbation, and squeejuice. I really can't.

Oh lord, I cringed so badly when he started yelling for everyone to come and see who'd smacked the hell out of the bandits on my first playthrough, I never talked to him after that.

Cognitive dissonace? Only in the rivalry path :wizard:

Ugh, the whole friendship/rivalry system makes this whole thing more frustrating. As if Anders's situation wasn't dubious enough already by itself, it's not like it needed even more variables.

To be honest, I really got the impression that he was suffering from 'bog standard' depression, for lack of a better term, in Awakenings too.
Not to get too personal, but I constantly surprise people when I tell them that I have suffered on and off with depression for the last 12 years because I am always the one cracking jokes. Nothing is ever serious. Anders has had some pretty crap things happen in his life, and he deflects it with humour. I can completely see how Vengeance could have exacerbated this. Particularly as someone said ages ago (can't remember who) that Anders is probably suffering from near constant cognitive dissonance.

Also *hugs for Yami*. I am similar right now, you're not alone, if that makes you feel any better? ^_^

Edit: Sorry for slowness guys, it's late and I want to say stuff right!

Awakening Anders did just come out from a year of solitary, or at least that was my impression. It seemed like the solitary was a very recent thing for him.

Okay so I finally buckled and tried to rivalmance Anders and it's starting to get frustrating. I'm at the conversation right at the start of Act 2 and no matter what I do, I either lose the romance or get 25-35 friendship. Any advice?

Sorry if this is kicking a dead horse or worse a dead Anders but I finished another playthrough (I will put the game down one day I swear) I was wondering did Bioware plan on us killing Anders? I mean there is Varric's banter and Seb's MARDAR, but Aveline made a comment along the lines of "Out of all the mages Anders I thought you would go out a blaze." and Anders replies "The day is still young." Of course Aveline tries to explain it as a compliment, but still I can't shake the feeling him dying was to be part of the "Token ending" as I know if it was set in stone he dies, we wouldn't get the options we get, but still.

Sorry for rambling at you guys again like Merrill >_>

I definitely agree that he uses humour to deflect negativity in his life, but I'm thinking more that he's active, he's taking delight in others' company, he's enjoying their jaunts around the countryside (for the most part), he risks his own life by coming back to help the Warden - things like that would indicate to me that he's going through a manic phase.
He has times when his mood drops when discussing the templars and his past in the Circle, but they seem more like dips in a good mood than the jokes being upticks in a low mood. If that were the case, I would wonder if his subsequent joining with Justice occured during a depressive phase, perhaps incorporating the memories of solitary and the fear of being alone that we've discussed before.
Justice's offer of assistance against the templars and Circle could have been something to cling to while feeling alone and depressed, a spark of hope that encouraged him to do something he may not have considered in a better frame of mind.

No I don't think the idea was for it to go in a specific way.

If that poll in the story section in the other day was significative, then most people don't actually kill Anders in the end. It was only like 35% IIRC.

I've always got the feeling that Bioware would rather we kill Anders than let him live, just judging by something Heplar wrote a while back stating how she kinda liked the idea of Anders living with the consequences he's created, meaning she initially saw it best for him to be dead. Not like in the end it really matters, but on a non-import game in DA3 you know his status would be flagged as "dead".

I wouldn't have said it's necessarily confined to the rivalry path. Justice/Vengeance still takes over during Dissent and Anders has to fight for control. And everyone experiences cognitive dissonance to some degree, it's that little niggly voice in the back of your head that goes 'Are you sure? Sure you're sure? Really?'. It's more a case of the amount of it. Although I agree it is far worse on the rivalry path.

Jennifer Helper who wrote him indicated that he wanted to die for what he had done and David Gaider says something similar. I personally think that  his death is the writers' preferred ending and their own canon for it, but they wanted to leave the option to the player and knew some would let him live so had to put in an ending to cover that.
Varic also has some banter about writing a story about a mage fighting against impossible odds that he can not hope to win... when Anders says indignantly 'cannot hope to win' Varic says 'it's not a good story unless the hero dies.' Not exact quotes but near enough.
But this is just my personal thoughts on things they have said.

The south has schizophrenic weather...it's cold one day, hell the next, then hailing that afternoon.

And we're supposed to get hail tonight. *grumbles*

Must we talk about solitary again? That was so depressing...depressing for me because it gave me a plot bunny and it WON'T STOP BREEDING.

But again, this is the reason why I have so much respect for Anders. HOW he came out of solitary still snarky is beyond me.

EDIT: And I think Helper said that having Anders live was a "poetic justice."

I figured it was just (slightly heavy handed) foreshadowing of what might happen. Showing, rightly, that Anders was on a dangerous path that could very well get him killed. Not that he had to die, but that he very well could.

That's... really surprising. Just judging the number of people who seethe with hatred for him on the rest of the forums, I thought most people would have killed him. I know in that character survey that was done a few weeks back he was the least liked character, second last to Carver, but then again he WAS competing with the likes of Varric and Isabela.

Agreed. It is a lot worse on the rivalry path.

Which is why I love it so much.  He's literally splitting apart and wondering just what is true. What's the right decision? Should he believe Justice? Is there anything left of Justice at all? Is Justice a demon? Justice says he's not a demon so he can't be. But Justice *acts* like a demon.

So many delicious tempting conflicting thoughts. <3
