Which is why in my first game my canon Hawke never even considered killing him, she was nearly as messed up as he was by the end of things, and she wouldn't give up on the last family (to her) that she had left, as much as she knew there wasn't going to be a happy ending.

By the end of Act 2, my Hawke was pretty messed up. No where near Anders' level, but still. Losing her brother in Lothering, fleeing to Kirkwall just to find herself pretty much a slave for smugglers for a year. Working hard to provide for her surviving sibling and mother, yet when she finally catches a lucky break she returns home to find templars dragging the one sister she's spent all her live protecting, away from her.

That's just what starts to chip at her mental health. What makes her really crack is failing to save her mother- which she fully blamed herself for and Gamlen yelling at her definitely help drive that guilt home. She clings to Ander as a lifeline, but he's also falling during all this time.

By the time Act 3 starts, she's barely more than an empty husk of herself. She hates the Chantry, the templars for taking her last family member away from her, and coming to Kirkwall where all of this happens. The one comfort she has left is slipping through her fingers to moments of bipolar fits. She wants to help him, but just can't figure out how.

So yeah.. no shiny playthrough for me:unsure:

It's very difficult to deal with a partner like that, but not impossible. It's all very dependent on how they react to your support. I very much get the sense that Anders is greatful and (as I said earlier) never takes it out on Hawke, and takes responsibility for his behaviour. So, there is some hope there!

Yeah, I definitely don't think it's entirely hopeless or something. And I do think that Anders is really good to Hawke most of the time.  I just think my Hawke is a stronger person than I. I don't know that I personally would be able to support him the way he needs.

Not trying to persuade you or anything, obviously. I'm with Kawamura on this, you might surprise yourself. Love does funny things. But I do sincerely hope you are never in that postion. It's not fun.
Also, hooray for hope! Fingers crossed for DLC eh?

Ha, sorry guys. I'm seriously not trying to be all doom and gloom or anything.

I was just bringing up my m-i-l as a case of... well, I guess dealing with someone who has severe psychological problems. The situation has stayed the same for years. I always hold out hope that things will get better and certainly my husband and I do what we can for her. And it's hard and it breaks my heart every time I see her. Which isn't to say I'm going to give up on her or anything. Just that... it's a hard thing to go through.

But anyway, now I am breaking my own rule of getting too depressing so I'll add in zombie Wynne necroboners and FabAnders riding an Alicorn.

Can I just say that I love that you guys are willing to have a sensible, sane discussion about mental illness and relationships as applied to a video game character? It gives me hope when something like this can be discussed without it immediately devolving into jokes. It will later, and that's fine, but at least we showed that we can take it seriously too!

I forgot were I read it, but some thread had something about Felmeth having a hidden cave where she was kidnapping and collecting different Heroes.

Just picturing Hawke, the Warden, and Maric sitting around a table playing cards while they wait for her to let them out to get some fresh air.

No problem, this is the Anders thread, where we love him for all that he is, even the depressing bits, and then festoon him with ruffled dresses and kittens!

That said, if you'd ever like the understanding ear of a *relative* stranger, I'm happy to offer.
Edit: Sorry if this sounds creepy. I can't think of a way to make it not. I just . . . yeah. Don't want you to feel bad, because you're awesome.

That would be vastly amusing. All you need is Revan in their sith lord armor sitting there and it's glorious.
