We had some -interesting- conversation in the chat last night about the Chantry...and what to do there....
*coughs*
Rheia: I went back and checked the chat history. I think it spanned like three/four pages of chat history. We are awesome? Bad? Awesomely bad? As appropriate for an Anders thread, I suppose.

It might be circuitous for some of us, but that is the nature of the beast.

Awesomely bad...sounds like something Zevran would say...hehe
But yes, we were very bad. It's a good thing we don't talk like that on here.

(I kind of want The Adventures of Hawke to be a television serial, just so we have something new to talk about each week.)
I think we all need that Homeward Bound DLC from the old speculative thread to cheer us up. The adventures of Ser Pounce-a-lot, y/y?

To be fair, though, I anticipated this when I started the thread. It's not just for squee (although squee is welcome) it's for civil discussion about Anders and his role in the game/universe. I knew that he was going to be pretty much The Loghain of DA2, and I embrace both sides of the debate as long as they are rationally drawn and avoid attacking other posters, either by name or by proxy (ie. "anyone who spares Anders is a terrorist IRL and I hate you").
It might be circuitous for some of us, but that is the nature of the beast.
Certainly. I'm all for a good discussion, but when neither side says anything new after about fifteen cycles it gets wearing.
And yes, that chat last night was hilarious. Most fun I've had in a long time.

What things annoy you when you read DA fanfiction? What do you like? And what do you want to see/read/whatever XD?
I know I'm annoying but I don't want to draw a comic that bores everyone to death... "

Submissive, overly blushing female Hawke... or male Hakwe. That's one trait I never saw in Hawke no matter what personality I played. Also, the Fix-it Warden who does no wrong and gets persecuted anyway. In general, I don't like weak heroes (there's a difference between troubled and weak). The characters that actively aim for my sympathy usually overshoot straight into annoyance.
I kind of like reading anything when I start out, then fine tune it later to what I enjoyed most. It's how I got into Nate/Anders really. Chanced upon it, shrugged, read it, fell in love with it. It's always fun to read frazzled!Sebastian. Banter with Varric and Izzy is gold. Of course, Anders in most capacities attracts my attention. As does stuff to do with the Fade, since as much as I hate playing through it, I find it interesting.
Conversely, read so much Fenris/Mage Fem!Hawke that I am now sick to death of it. In fact I'm sick of Mage Fem!Hawke in general really. Same as I'm fed up of Fem!Cousland for the Wardens.
Also, developing a slightly unhealthy love for Meredith/Orsino hatesex. They do practically act like they're married in-game.

I just get a little uncomfortable at the vibe I'm getting that you have to spare Anders to be a true fan.
I don't believe that. Everyone has different opinions and you can absolutely be a fan if you chose that route. It is a RPG afterall.

When the story is just ALL about the PC character, admittedly most of the time a tropeMary Sue. Everything circles that character, every sentence and line is about that character. There is one person that does a comic on Dev art, who I enjoyed at first..but her character has become nothing but an angst magnet, and everything is about her. If it were done like Rooster's though, I would like it again.
I am just sick of seeing Bella-esque main characters, I want flawed-characters who make mistakesm and who can't negotiate every situation, who can overcome their weaknesses and trials but come out with the scars of those battles. That's my opinion anyway.

That's not true at all. Fans of Anders can still kill him but appreciate what he has done for the story, whether bad or good.

I really don't believe that, myself - I have reasons for choosing the route I did, you have reasons for choosing the route you did, and it should end there. That's all.

The one thing that puts me off a lot of fic is people writing about their PC. Other OCs? Sure. But not their PC.
Our Hawkes and Wardens are intended to be a self-insert, an avatar of ourselves in the world, and reading about someone else's character doing things just makes me uncomfortable. Like I'm prying into their fantasies or daydreams. NPC interactions are awesome, provided the person gets the characterisation right, but the PCs? Ick. It's like they say: no one wants to hear about the epic dream you had last night nearly as much as you want to tell it to them.
If people really want to write a new character into the story, I strongly suggest creating one that no one is going to start out with emotional ties to. I consider our own individual Hawkes and Wardens to be a little too sacrosanct.
YMMV, and I'm sure some people have done it well, but it's the one thing guaranteed to stop me from reading.

I'm surprised that you guys are have found so many DA2 fanfiction cliches already. A lot of people have barely finished the game at this point. How much DA2 fanfiction can there possibly be, let alone bad fanfiction?
In my case, it's a loathing carried over from fanfiction in general. I look up fanfic from all my major fandoms so I've seen every type in the book. In that sense I'm probably not objective enough to have a decent discussion about it.
The kink meme seems to be made up almost two-thirds of Mage Hawke, often with Fenris. So scouring through those when I'm already fed up of it is a little bit aggravating. I'm seeing a lot of that pairing because of the angst potential.

Meh. Fanfiction. Never really been a huge fan of it for several reasons. Dragon Age fanfiction can be REALLY special, too, if you know what I mean.

Writing about a Warden or Hawke at all or just a retelling of the game? Retellings of the game can get old, I agree, (pointedly ignores my epic DA:O story) but stories that involve them at all? Including pre-game, post-game, and just one-shots-that-have-nothing-to-do-with-the-game-plot? I don't see what's wrong with them or why there's anything more annoying about them than another OC. They don't have to be written as a self-insert regardless of how the game makes the world revolve around the Warden (and Hawke kind of obsolete).Threeparts wrote...
