If I enjoy the characters enough, I can play the game over and over making identical decisions, just as I can watch the same movie a million times. I have two Wardens with four finished playthroughs, one of whom is my mod/dialogue tester, which means she's probably been through most of the game close to seven times (and the Landsmeet close to fifty). I was thinking about firing her up the other day, for nostalgia's sake.

Oh! ToP. Anders' butt, courtesy of Payroo! Posted Image

I think it was made pretty clear from DA:O
The Templars are the military branch of the Chantry. They are near enough the holy army.

Like Leliana said to Alistair: "But you must have been a brother before you became a templar, no?"

My friends do that. I think.
So I just keep babling about it. Surprisingly, my best friend hasn't complained yet.

...did your boyfriend miss out every other mage in Kirkwall? They're that desperate for a reason, I'd expect. (Act 3, Templar vs. Mage cinematic gave a pretty damn clear picture of why there are so many blood mages)

OH, and Chicken, tell Drew he's awesome!

I'm lucky in that it's the girls that generally play most of the video games. We'll sit and talk about plot, LIs, and how hot the male characters are until the cows come home. The guys all play WoW and try desperately to steer the conversation that way. (Two of the women write romance novels for a living, so the conversation often gets, well, steamy when talking about those hot characters.)

Concerning picking LIs or making choices, I agree that there are some things none of my Shepards/Wardens/Hawkes will ever do. Eg. I've tried various backgrounds with Shepard, but I know that Ruthless is the one I'll never try, because it just doesn't appeal to me. Likewise, I know none of my Wardens will ever kill the Dalish or keep the Anvil of the Void. They're just choices that I don't want to make. It's the same for LIs, some of them just don't appeal to me. I don't get the feeling that I'm missing out on anything if none of my Wardens ever romance Leliana or none of my Hawkes ever romance Izzie.

And it's true that you may make the same choices, but making them with a different character and a different background gives them a different flavour. Still, I wouldn't mind replaying the exact same character twice: if I enjoy the story and the choices I make, I don't mind repetition. It's same as watching a film or reading a book more than once: some people enjoy it.

@ MG800: Ok, I'll look it up.

Can't agree more, there are things I could never try. For example, diploHawke - just can't, either idealist/politician/helpful guy is a guy/girl I feel urge to slap/kill once created. Most close to this is my charming, calm, always-in-control Hawke, total bastard but likeable - and gets a human face in the act 3 (unintentional but intresting).
As for choices, I would never let Ella be killed, or this half-elven kid possesed. And I doubt I'll miss anything  if I won't play absolutly brainwashed templar supporter - same for mages.

I thought it was crystal clear, but there I was arguing in a restaurant about it. And, I know my friend has seen my emails by now so I don't know if he just can't admit that he was wrong or what...

How the heck does someone get all the way through the game without realizing that the Chantry controls the Templars? How do you even argue with someone who doesn't get the basic facts of the game world right?

I, also, have no one to talk to the game about. Well, I have one friend who beat it, but she's got a lot of real life drama going on and I feel really pathetic and unsympathetic if I try to steer the conversation towards my fictional pixelated boyfriend. lol. There's my husband, but he plays so slooooow. He has about 3 quests left in act 1. That means I can't talk about anything after that, which is pretty limiting.

In the same way as Meredith and Orsino do, I imagine - by screaming very loudly at each other and insulting each other until something nearby gets broken.

Then you enter the war stage.

Well, ingame, it looked more like the Templars allowed Chantry presence, and listen to them, only for diplomatic reasons (well, noone fancies holy wars). And the fact that Elthina is doing nothing, may gave them the idea, that Chantry doesn't at least try to control their military force. Elthina is a poor leader, let's face it.

That's what my friend believes, but he played the first game too! I could see maybe getting all the way through DA2 and not getting it, but DA:O?

I almost punched this super-nerdy-guy at the comic shop the other day.
Seriously.
Him: Dragon Age 2 was the biggest disappointment so far in the year. I'm hoping they don't butcher the Mass Effect Series like they did to Dragon Age. I mean, seriously? Anders gay? And Isabela looks totally different. Plus the timeline is so ****ed up I can't follow it.
Me: Anders is not gay. He just likes cats and shiny things and Hawke's beard. That doesn't make him gay.
Him: Alexa, he's gay. And whiny. I mean, he was probably a romance option for guys because girls wouldn't put up with his ****ing.
Me: You're just jealous. Anders does it better.
Him: Does what better?
Me: ****ing. Now shut up before we get into a serious debate. That will probably end in me smashing your face.
Him: You like this game too much, you know.
Me: You must not like your face very much.
Drew: I think you've both made your point. Transformers, anyone?

Did he ever take Alistair and Leliana in the same party?
Tell him to take them both to lothering, and walk over that bridge until he hears Leliana inquire as to Alistair being a brother prior to the vows he never took:

All templars were intitiated into the Chantry.
Tada.

I suppose, if you don't read the codexes, and you haven't played Origins....It just seems weird to me, because it seems like such a basic facet of the storyworld for me, to imagine getting through the game without knowing it! Please take my original response as surprise and not any insult towards people who missed it. :)

Doesn't surprise me, really. People live their lives without knowing which parties sit in the government of their country, so why not play through a video game without knowing the finer nuances of power structure.

Okay, so this is off topic but I just created a new Hawke. Or rather, I wanted something other than a generic avatar, so I had to make an xbox live silver account because our main BW account is under my husband's name. This meant I needed to recreate my canon Hawke for the new account in order to get her as an avatar. Thing is, I was only going to go as far as the character creator so that I could get the new avatar.

I'm sure you can all guess where this story is going. The lure of Anders was too strong. I ended up playing long enough to recruit him and flirt with him. Now I've spent a bunch of time on what was supposed to be a throwaway character. It's all Anders' fault.

*sigh*

Totally worth it though, if only to have Adelynne Hawke peering at all of you and to replay more Andersy goodness.

I don't get the "Anders is not gay" thing. I mean, there was that banter with Oghren. "You're quite the dirty little dwarf..." XD

And other, serious factors.

Also, Drew sounds awesome.

I really love Anders' quote about how he falls for the person, not the body. Imagine what a happy place the world would be if everyone was like that. :D

It's ridiculous. So what if you think he went through a magical sexuality change between Awakening and DA2? Why is that any of your business?
And how dare the writers go a different direction with THEIR storyline. -extreme eyeroll-

And don't get me wrong. Drew and I get into our fair share of arguments. We disagree over Merrill, Aveline, blood magic in general. Like, he thinks that blood magic could be useful, while I told him it clearly says in the guide that there's no way to do it with good intentions.

I totally stopped watching one artist on deviantart after she said Anders is way too feminine in DAII. Seriously, wtf, you're a woman, why the hell are you treating femininity as a bad thing?

Merril.
But her good intentions doesn't matter - her reasoning sucked. It's like Aveline said: "Why don''t you work with what you have, instead of trying to recreate the old glory"?
Also I do think that blood magic could be useful - but I wouldn't trust anyone who uses it.
