 I think  I have a bad influence on this thread. Whenever I come here everyone's posting funny pics and lulzing. Then I'm all like "HAY GUYS ANDERS MENTAL STATE!!!1" and then it all goes downhill

That depends on how you define a "person".

I think they're something of a colloid. The parts form a distinct whole that functions differently from its separate components.

The thing is, through the whole game, there are TONS of occasions in which Anders is pretty much just himself, with no Justice influence, like when he jokes around with the other characters, or in his relationship with Hawke, and whatnot. It's not like justice's influence changes his whole being.

Ultimately though, everyone can have their own interpretation of the whole situation. I don't agree with yours, but it's not like we're gonna change each other's minds anyway so might as well just drop it. I'm too tired for this

My argument is that the game as presented doesn't lead me to believe that the consciousness that you describe could either be interpreted as separate (as you imply) or in the background (as you say).  It's simply integrated itself into his psyche.  Ergo, both Anders and Justice that existed before such a merger as we knew and understood them ceased to exist.

But Justice isn't just waiting in the background. They've merged and share the same consciousness.

That's actually a good point (though they seem to stand somewhat appart as idividuals at times. One being at another) Friendship path seems to merge them completely, so I'd assume Anders retains aspects of both his own personality and Justice's.

Rivalry drives them appart and leaves them two consiousness' fighting for one mind.

That's how it seems to me.

And it doesn't stop them from being the same entity either. Oh, why must the psyche be so complicated?

I think so too. It's a bit like depression/mania really. People suffering from those aren't constantly depressed/maniac, they just have episodes every now and then.

But Justice isn't the one always in control. He's always conscious, but not always in control. He is in the background.

Yeah, I'll post more crap later. I just meant too bad to post more now. I like having serious discussions (or at least reading them). It is the way of this thread. It will get serious for a while and then we'll all need a lulzy break. That was, after all, how the crack fic was born- me arguing for hours and then my brain snapping, haha.

i could also say that the person i was 5 years ago has ceased to exists; my experiences have changed me. i've changed.
anders is like a potato, and justice is cheese. together they make a lovely dinner, but it is still just a potato with cheese on top, not an amalgamated mash. together but distinct

You've now reminded me of those peanut butter and jelly in the same jars abominations.  And I can't stop seeing Anders and Justice as such. Two things that do not belong in the same container forced into it by someone with a sick mind. (Yes I hate those peanut butter and jelly in the same jar. It...it's I dunno but it just makes me bleh.)
