I agree. If he was a sexy woman, we'd all hate him and they would all like him. Maybe. I would probably still like "him" because he gave me a strong emotion.

This paradox also explains why people complain about Fenris being whiney, but not Merril or other characters. It's perhaps easier to see flaws in one's gender -- or to feel annoyed or even threatened by them.

Which I would say would explain my wanton hate for Isabela, other people don't seem to like her either. Not because she is "loose" but because that's all that was explored with her.

I openly admit I wouldn't stand Anders if he was female. I'm not sure if it's sexism or a mixture of that and being tired of females being the clingy, jealous, snippy type.

Fenris bugs me a bit to because of his douche moments. I understand them but him calling Merrill a monster makes me wanna backhand him.

Bleh I hate Isabela because she ditches me. Bleh. Get the damn book on your own from now on. I miss out on some experience but it won't kill me.

@Naamah_bb I'm getting even more flak as a fan because I actually think what Anders did WAS justified in the world he was in. That's an unpopular opinion even among Anders fans. I don't condone terrorism in the modern world, but in this case I truly believe there were no other options.

He's this game's Morrigan. Because of his actions, he produces some pretty strong reactions by players. Personally, I think he's a strong character with a lot of depth and I sympathize with his position even if I can't condone his actions. But when a character does something so drastic, you have to expect some negative feedback.

I think Morrigan and Anders are both pretty deep characters. Morrigan was difficult to read at first and reluctant to let anyone crack her shell, but when you do, it's very satisfying. Even though she disapproves of almost every "saintly" acts you do, those little conversations she has with you regarding her childhood and even calling Alistair an idiot for letting Goldanna walk all over him shows she has some form of compassion/humanity. It's understandable why both do the things they do. Anders wants to permanently liberate his people from a millenia's worth of persecution and torment while Morrigan machinates a plan to save your life as you slay the Archdemon.

Was it a coincidence that Morrigan forestalled a "change" that Anders caused? Possibly.

Oh, i bet that's an unpopular opinion! But i kind of get it. I'm a bit too much of a pacifist most of the time but when i see religious oppression in THIS world i want to blow up a chantry or two, so how much more would that be amplified in a situation the the Circle in kirkwall?

Same here--I didn't completely condone it at first, but the more I think and play, the more I understand the bigger picture. I guess I'm a filthy terrorist with battered wife syndrome.

Ugh. People.

This, except the fenris part. TBH though, I didn't dislike Merril or Leli, and I have mixed feelings about Mori. I went from disliking Mori, to liking to feeling betrayed and a little sad. I just out right dont like Izzy, even though I started out liking her. :pinched:

It's OK for people to excuse Izzy for her stupidity and selfishness in DA2 because she's hot she didn't know the consequences of what would happen, but then again Merrill didn't know her playing with the mirror would get her keeper, she only assumed it would get her killed at the worse. My God, what an imbecile, she should have known better. :?

re: battered wife syndrome

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to resort to playing the "you silly women only agree with him because you and your TINY LADY BRAINS have to make excuses for your cute fictional boyfriend" card. Not long at all, as it turns out!

Hear hear! I'm glad I'm not as alone as I thought I was in that opinion.

And as far as waiting to see how it turns out, from what Varric says at the end, Anders has definitely acheived his main goal. The Chantry has lost control of all the circles AND the Templars have revolted (I'm hoping they've revolted against being told to wholesale slaughter their charges, not just run off and decided to wholesale slaughter their charges without the sanction of the Chantry).

I think a female Fen wouldn't have been so bad.

Might've reminded me a little too much of Morrigan though.

Just the typical "he's whiny!" comments everywhere. Same with Kaidan.

My favorite characters in this game (besides Varric) are Carver, Anders, and Fenris.  All of whom are accused of being whiny.

LOL, me too.

I think I am just doomed to always love the characters that the fandom hates the most.  Kaidan, Alistair, Carver, Anders...  (Um. They also just happen to be the sexy, sexy human male characters.)

I'm not sure if the war Anders fueled would've created some exceedingly disastrous and alarming results. It's pretty clear that for 1 nutcase such as Meredith, there's a levelhead one like Cullen to counterbalance. The mage insurrection would last for several years, but I could see both templars and mages alike coming to an agreement. I'd like to believe that what he did was ultimately the best solution.

Nah, the "fandom" just hates that you don't love their beefy avatars instead. <3
I also loved Carver, Kaidan, etc. I also liked Hope from FF13, everyone and their grandma was like "he's a whiny twerp!!" Broken record much?

At first I was really pissed off at Anders not just b/c he did it without me moving forward with the Justice quest, but that he just sat there afterwards when this was his chance to really rage. But in my second playthrough I paid more attention to what was going on, and between the books that discussed the founding of the Chantry and the Circle, as well as Mother Petrice's complete disregard for life, I started to understand why he did it. Hell, after the Viscount's son is murdered in the Chantry (where were all those mothers and sisters then??), I wanted to blow it up myself right then and there.
