tbh I think both the warden and Hawke would have to be forceably removed from their LIs in their disappearance. If not then Bioware is 'Assuming direct control' of your characters and making decisions for them which would not go down well among the fans at all. Both my Warden and Hawke would never give up their LI willingly so I'm guessing they've probably got themselves in some sort of trouble...
Both the Warden and Hawke have contacts in all sorts of organisations and groups, so they'd hear about things that went on long before anyone else. I'm sure they are thought of as Big Damn Heroes (or Big Damn Villains, as the case may be) by groups as disparate as the Grey Wardens, the Crows, the Dalish, the Legion of the Dead, the Divine, the Qunari, and Maker knows who else.
I like to think that they've been contacted by one (or several) of these groups about **** Going Down somewhere off-screen and have been recruited to do battle or go undercover or something else that would make use of their unique skill sets. Like Varric says, our heroes have experience in matters of Weird. Having them just disappear into the mists of history would be as
incredibly unsatisfying as the heroes going "over the Sea" at the end of Lord of the Rings.
If they're gone forever, I want to have them pass into
recorded history as great heroes and leaders of people, one of whom passed into the Deep Roads and was last seen leading a battalion of Legionaires against the Darkspawn, and the other of whom was cut down during The Battle of Cumberland. Even if it happens off-screen, it would be a far more satisfying ending than "and then they disappeared for ever after and it's up to
*~your imagination~* to decide their ending! :wizard:"

bull**** way to tell a ****ing story grrrr *grumbles*
