I have finally broken down and started a mage PT while romancing Anders. (I admit I am usually Fenris focused) I decided i wanted to see things from Anders perspective. I have also decided I won't kill him on this playthrough, even though it still ticks me off that he resorted to such exteme measures to accomplish his goal.

On another note, I am also dissapointed that BioWare caved in to the "Fox News" pressure and dumbed down their romance scenes to PG rather that their previous R rating. This game is rated M and the content should reflect such. I should have been able to at least see a half naked Anders or Fenris.

Awkward quick dress-ups? And not even a tinny little bit of skin shown, while desire demon parades proudly almost-naked("demons are our friends" - the more I look, the more Merril seem to have a point...)? 
Don't care - I just frown at mechanics of the game, which makes romance too short. And friendship. I want to talk to you, gaah! Or whatever I feel like doing!
Yeah, it's a "story", Varric. Let's skip the "boring" details <_<

i like the scenes i lot more in this game. they're about romance - not sex, and anders's especially is really sweet (merrill's is not the same <shut up>). sex scenes make me feel like i'm intruding; i get so embarresed and usually skip them (fable's were particularly cringe-inducing). but i can't get enough of anders's smexy times

Varric's coy response to Anders refusing to tell him "details" about the Anders-Hawke romance is, "Have it your way, I'll just make something up."

Since the whole game involves Varric telling the Hawke story to Cassandra, I half believe that ALL the romance/sex scenes between Hawke and any of the love interests are Varric's "making something up." He's just being a little less graphic about talking about specific body parts to Cassandra, as it's his friends who are involved. (Natural embarassment.)

The story-teller's embarassment also explains why Varric is okay with describing the desire demons in such detail (though did they have tails in the first game? I can't remember). He's talking about the personification of lust, so it's pretty acceptable to describe their body parts with some relish.

In any case, I've romanced all the potential love interests, and Anders is truly my favorite. He also is the best (and most frequent!) kisser. It made his succumbing to the darkside all the more tragic.

Good, they reduced it to kiss, bed and black out (though it makes me think, that my Hawke just had too much wine - nervous much?)

though if cassandra is going to be a da3 companion most of the hawke lore is probably going to come from her

I'm with you 100%. You don't need nudity or even partial nudity to convey sexuality, sensuality, or intimacy. Heck, the first time Anders kisses Hawke is the sexiest thing I've seen in a video game ever. It's the VA (the panting! *swoon*), the blocking, and the dialogue itself. You can see and hear how much passion and restraint he has. It's a powerful moment.

Origins, on the other hand, had partial nudity, but the only thing I felt while watching most of the scenes was rather awkward. The blocking was a bit off, the facial expressions unintentionally hilarious (I know you can make a case for this in real life sex, too, but isn't a video game supposed to be a bit of an idealized fantasy), and the whole thing was just...a bit strange. So all things considered, I'm happy with the direction DA2 took.

I also agree that things were nicely done in this game. I thought the DA:O romance scenes were a bit cringe worthy. The animation was weird and they were, essentially, humping in their underwear. I vastly prefer the way the romance scenes were done this time around. Each scene felt more personal and more about the relationship instead of being about two pixel characters rubbing awkwardly against each other.

@MG800 now you've made me imagine Hawke just passing out at the start of the romance scene, lol.

Well, I wouldn't say is the sexiest ever - that privilege still belongs to Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within, in my opinion - but it is definitely a very powerful moment, very emotional.

Still, I feel like I have to say that, if done right, nudity can convey incredibly meaningful emotions, but it has to be done right. Alas, as much as I liked DA:O sex scenes, they weren't very good. Between the two, I certainly prefer DA2 approach, but, if I had complete creative power over the game, I'd go for some meaningful, non-gratuitous nudity piared with DA2 great dialogues.

Yes, Anders was the best kisser. Rated him a "10" on all three kisses. (Fenris did come close...both of his scenes were well done.) Wished Anders' dialogue wasn't so exaggeratedly over-the-top, though.

On a side note:

Loved the line your Hawke gives when responding to Varric's caution about the Anders relationship: The "What makes you think that I wouldn't be attracted to crazy?" response acknowledges that Hawke recognizes that Anders is trending to unstable, but still adores him anyway.

Completely agree with both of you. I coudln't handle the sex scenes in DA:O, at all. I felt either nothing or embarassment...neither of which I'm assuming Bioware was going for. 

The DA2 scenes were perfect, my only qualm was that there were not more of them.

I LOVE the DA2 sex scenes. They are romantic, and sweet, without feeling like you are intruding on a private moment. I found the origins ones uncomfortable - it felt vaguely voyeuristic, seeing all that. I liked the kiss, Hawke leading Anders to bed, and him lying down on top of her, fade to black. We knew what was happening, without it being intrusive. A big improvement, in my opinion.

And yeah, Hawke knew what she was getting into. I love snark!Hawke

EDIT: Oh god yes, that kiss scene in the clinic was the sexiest thing I have ever seen.
