I think the reason why siding with the templars is so hard is because in the end, the Right of Annulment ends up slaughtering a lot of innocent people. Potentially dangerous innocents, yes, but still. I haven't seen the cutscene from the templar point of view, so I don't know if it differs at all, but in the end you see big guys in armor cutting down skinny little girls with funny hats. It's hard to watch.
You do have innocent mages that do surrender to you and Cullen gets to shine some more.
But Orsino is crazier in the templar ending. He kills mages himself to turn into the harvester.
Mmm, Cullen. Whenever I spoke to him at first, I would look at Anders and say "I hope you're listening. That's what a proper Anders should sound like." Then Howden's voice grew on me and now I love them both.
But still: Mmm. Cullen.
