You know, I honestly didn't find Sebastian as preachy as Leliana in Origins. You can shut down Seb's preaching pretty easily by being aggressive or sarcastic (or maybe I just find it satisfying to treat his faith with such disdain and call the Grand Cleric a fool). Leliana's faith just seemed more like blind zealotry to me, what with her "dream" that she insisted on calling a vision. But perhaps this only bugs me so much because Origins didn't have the rival option, so if I called her a preachy idiot she just flat-outed hated me.

Edit: Top, balls.

Personally I just look at the Chantry as mideval Catholic, which was a corrupt church with way to much power. Which funny enough had an templar army. That aside my feelings toward Seb were based on his strong faith. But his strong faith was blind.

I have my faith and I keep it close to my heart, but I will never speak of it unless asked as I don't see the point and I am not blind to it.

Also Dreaming why do you hate Bethany so much?

Agreeing with the religious part.

As for Bethany:
She seems to be eternally whining, and unlike Carver I don't find her interesting enough to put up with it.
Everybody in the party likes her. No rivalry with Beth. *snorts*
There was the bit where she called her magic a curse and said that she used to wish she'd been sent to the Circle. I'll send you to the Circle, no problem!
She's just too sweet. I don't like that in a character.
Give me a flawed character, don't dump me with "sunshine" here.

I could rant forever. I wont.
If people like her, that's fine with me, I just can't stand her.

^^^ This, so much. Leliana annoyed me so much and has probably coloured my response to the Chantry in all the games.

I still find it hard to play anything but a mage for too long past the Gallows, so admittedly my experience with Beth is more limited than most, but I agree with you completely. From the get go, her dynamic with Hawke seemed less interesting to me. I think she's supposed to trigger feelings of protectiveness, but honestly I just wanted her to grow a backbone. Carver, on the other hand, seemed more realistic to me. I think siblings naturally tend to be "rivals" to some degree or another (or maybe that's just me putting too much of my own life into play), but Carver's desire to prove himself really rang true to me. And I love the back-and-forth he and Hawke have at times.

I realize how that sounded after the fact (I'm pulling an all nighter studying for finals...and getting distracted, apparently, but te point is I'm not at my most coherent). But even if you just disagree with her or try to suggest there might be another explanation for her dream or all the various things she attributes to the Maker, she doesn't want to hear it. Fine, I don't have to force my views on people. But she's not capable of the same. It's always the-Maker-did-this or the-Maker-chose-me, and honestly it's annoying. Believe what you want, lady, but don't get annoyed when I don't do the same.

Edit: Sorry about the double post. I meant to edit my last one. See, over-tired here. Pay no attention to the dithering idiot.

God Yes.
Carver I can respect because despite being whiny about it, he either put up with what life gave him (Warden) or attempted to find his own path (Templar). And despite being an ass, he still cares about his family.
And sometimes I feel a little sorry for him, being the only non-mage child must be hard. He probably felt inferior in the eyes of his father.

Also, his part in the end of Act III just made me go "aww~".
He's also great fun to pick on!

Plus I have a special affection for Jerks. XD

I was wondering you are the first person I saw say that.  I don't hate her, but I don't like her as well.  With my Warrior hawke(my canon) I felt like there would be more tension as she was a Templar. ^_^  but all and all I think she has little sister eyes for Hawke and that can get annoying.  Also how quick her and Hawkes mom were willing to forget being Hawkes to be Amells.

Carver I love because I get to troll him ^_^  But I have to play a mage...and I like smashing things with big weapons.

Ahhhhhhh Highcastle, you need the diversion. Studying for finals is far too intense, you need some mental variety. ;)

I've just watched the youtube of the rivalry Anders ending... and I'm so sad! If it was de-buged for the Xbox I might be tempted to rivalmance him... but I don't know that I want to, whilst my Hawke didn't go all out for mage freedom initially and was trying to find a half way house it still felt more right to side with the mages if only because Meredith was a nutbar and had to be stopped.
On my second run through I was more pro-mage and Anders did come across as more unhinged and paranoid, but well... are you paranoid if they're really coming for you? I love the bit Tomwise says in Darktown 'the word is the templars are out for you Hawke.'

@Melca My son is amazing. He's 8 months and I've been door-knocked three times since he was born and every time he's started to scream at the top of his lungs as soon as the door is opened. Only ever for religious door-knockers. Suffice to say they back off pretty quick when you've got a screaming child on your hip. Or a vomiting one. That one was PRICELESS.

I'm beginning to wonder if he knows something I don't...

Good luck on the finals by the way. Love how you've managed to study for it and still take the time to update your fic ;D

And as annoying and BORING Leliana can be, at least she has some redeeming qualities where as Sebastian has um... he's pretty?

You mean Leliana is capable of independant action and doesn't always whimp out, while Seb can't do anything on his own, and then half the time won't help you back because of his "faith"?

(Leliana's preachyness never really annoyed me, I just ignored it. The only times I felt like slapping her were A) When she mentioned the Maker saving the Dalish hunter. I think my Dalish Warden would have gladly ripped her throat out for that. B) When she sang that elven song. I don't know I just have a very Chantry vs. Dalish mindset.)

Aw, thanks! I feel like this board and my silly (and getting to be ridiculously long) fic are providing a decent diversion from studying once all the words just start looking the same on the page. Or when I start to feel like Anders at his manifesto, writing the same damn thing about twenty times wondering if it's going to convince anyone at all.

I have two, one for criminology and one for British Lit. The criminology one is on the corrections systems, mostly dissecting what doesn't work and why, and what might work better. The British Lit one is on randomness in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and White Teeth, proving God doesn't exist and life is a series of random events. Yeah, Leliana and Sebastian would love me. :P

I would gladly write a paper on the topic of Andersbutt. The legend of Anders having a butt underneath all that cloth, and the likely hood of it existing, various theories on what it might be like and the evidence of its existance...

Haha I love you <3

Hopefully I'm not too late to jump in, we're trying to keep this thread alive yes?

I didn't hate Leliana in Origins at all, I sort of just ignored her religious babbling and didn't care enough about her opinion to try and argue or whatever. But my boyfriend HATED her guts, in DA2 he loves Sebastian and I can't stand his little puffy face -.- It's funny because before I started DA2 for the first time I made all these decisions about what my Hawke would be like so I went all SUPER atheist, hates templars, hates the chantry etc. - I had no idea It'd be this relevant.

And as for papers and such, I'm thinking of changing my dissertation topic to something about storytelling which makes the audience/player feel involved enough to struggle with fictional decisions while exploring social issues through a fantasy narrative or some crap like that, just so I can basically write about Anders and the Chantry Jenga.

WHAAAAAAAAAAT!?
You're kidding me.
I have to put up with Shakespeare, Chaucer, and classical literature (true, I enjoy them, regardless, but stil) and you're studying the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!?

I shall be having a word with the British Educational Authorities... <_<
