Well honestly, I don't think many, if any, people go to the chantry to pray at night.  But that isn't really the point.

Am I the only one who was creeped out by the freaking huge Andraste statue?  I mean damn...

I was more curious about who all the guys holding the incence censers were supposed to be. Soldiers in her army?
The faithful? Why were they all men?

@Thebrute7 - There is difference of opinion among players about the time of day the Chantry got jenga'd.  Light coming in the Chantry windows, Meredith and Orsino be running around looking for Elthina instead of sleeping, etc., that indicates not-night to me.  Also, Anders goal was to kill Elthina, so there would be no compromise, right?  Does Elthina sleep in the Chantry?  Does she stay there working into the wee hours of the night?  If not, she wouldn't be there at night.  If others want to interpret the game differently, no problem.  Just asking them to agree that if someone thinks people were awake, it's reasonable to assume people were praying.

Ok so that's really OT but to bring it back to Anders, this probably isn't the case in the Chantry? Nobody went to the Death Star to pray. People probably went to the Chantry to pray (and stare at the MASSIVE gold statues. Seriously. Melt those down and you could probably feed all of Darktown for a year.)

Probably not.

Really, it all boils to whether you're ok with premeditated killing of innocent people for a cause.  It happens all the time in war; every government does it, and it's apparently ok when accompanied with a legal stamp, but not ok when it's a guy acting on his beliefs independent of legal sanction.  Anders isn't specifically out to kill innocent people any more than bombing runs are, but it happens as an ugly fact.

And to bring it back to Thedas and out of real life, it's only a relatively recent phenomenon that has governments IRL caring at all about whether their actions cause collateral damage (I hate that phrase, but it works).  In Thedas?  They don't seem to give a damn.  Even Elthina seems resigned to the possibility than an Exalted March will kill innocents, and the Divine doesn't appear perturbed by that.

(I realize you're not saying it's okay, you're talking about public perception and reaction.)

For me, it's not a question of okay, it's never okay, but a question of "avoidable or not".  Not a question of "legal stamp" either.  It doesn't matter to me at all that Anders acted alone, and not at the behest of a first enchanter or such.  What matters to me is I thought he had other, better options.  (Those being a whole discussion the thread has had many times, won't rehash.)

It just occurred to me that maybe I'm not allowed to post totally nekkid Andersbutt pictures in the BioWare forums, like I just did. Going to go read the forum rules... If anyone knows offhand, let me know, please.

The guys in templar armor in the jenga scene?  I assume those were templar bodyguards, or templars assigned to the Chantry, or templars there for evening prayers.  Didn't even notice they had cencers!  Was too busy screaming at David Gaider. ;)

Considering you can't even curse, I'd say it's probably frowned upon. Myself, I have no qualms about Andersbutt pictures, though I will say it makes viewing this thread at work harder (giggity) ;)

I don't know about rules, but I have posted a whole hell of a lot of Alistair/Cousland ass on these boards and have never heard anything about it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Heh. I'd have laughed if the Chantry had gone up and Anders turned around and said "I didn't do it."

Does anyone else find it impossible to romance anyone else after romancing Anders? Believe me, I've tried, but I find it difficult to engage with the others on quite the same level.

Oh, also, on this point, I blame that purely on game mechanics.  Can't figure out how the Devs could manage to overlook the rather bizarrely illogical point of, since Kirkwall is this hyper-super-ultra-anti-mage place with a bat-crazy Knight-Commander and a far more oppressive Circle than elsewhere, having the Templars, especially Cullen, of all people, happily disregard the fact that several known apostates are being allowed to romp through the city completely unmolested, and well before Hawke has the flimsy plot-armour of being the Champion.  It's one thing for Anders to somehow live freely in Darktown, since we do at least hear and see indicators that the refugees are prepared to die protecting him.  But for him to stroll into Hightown, or the bloody Gallows, and all Cullen does is give him the stink-eye?!

It's worse. You can march up to Cullen with Anders in Hawke's party and tell Cullen Anders' is plotting against the Chantry. And Cullen does not immediately arrest Anders.

Yeah, I've heard you can do that.  I keep trying to find a youtube of that scene.

Here

Argh!!!! That's up there with the scene with Meredith if you let that faux-bloodmage go and Fenris grasses on you! I fully talked to my TV at that point. "What are you doooing?!" Didn't take him there the second time. Can't believe Fenris grassed on me, boy still caves to a superior authority.

As for romping through the town unmolested - the first portion I think your characters are of little interest to anyone. And of course the town would be a lot busier than it actually is in game so I think you'd blend in more and I'm gonna make the assumption that some people carry staves that aren't mages for some other reasons.
Once you're established as the champion Hawke provides the "they're with me" cloak of invisibility and I get the impression that when not with you they wouldn't all be carrying their weapons, otherwise I cannot account for where Merril gets to without being arrested. Anders of course I imagine as always armed, but he sticks to Darktown/ gallows tunnels etc - he doesn't get out in the sun a lot, and his good work earns him some leaway. I can imagine the Senschal pulls a few strings at least.

And someone mentioned not seeing the mage underground/ proof of being pursued by templars a while back. I like how this was left open. It gives space for the player to either cast him as paranoid, or to be genuinely harrassed by them -  just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you.

Oh my, yes!  Fenris, mopey bigot for years on end.  Merrill, adorable, but a bit blind to some facts.  Isabela, I can't get past her shallow facade, even knowing it's a facade.  However, if Varric were romanceable, you wouldn't be able to pry my Hawke off him.  He has the qualities I like in Anders, great looks, humor, kindness, facial scruffies, but none of the zealotry and crazypants.  Also, he is a convenient height.  And has broad, manly shoulders.  Wait, I meant to say sorry Anders, you're the only one for my Hawke, I will always luuuuv you!

I find it difficult because it's obvious the poor guy loves Hawke regardless of whether you pursue it or not, so it's like, I dunno, the guy already has enough issues, I don't want to add a broken heart to it.

Plus, the grin.

No the statues of men lining the walls as you walk in, and then one more on each side of the Andraste statue. I'm a consoler or I'd offer screenshots to show what I mean.

Edit: Posted Image They're kind of on the walls in the concept art. But they are there in the game too.

Oh, those guys!  That I also did not notice, for I am quite oblivious when screaming at David Gaider.  Statues of Chantry brothers?  Or maybe Maferath and Hessarian?  Or Shartan and Hessarian?  Do you recall what they were wearing?

I can romance other characters, but I find Anders' to be the most... impactful for me and not just for his story involvement. I enjoy Fenris' romance and like that it ends much more hopeful, but I forget that I ever romanced him in a playthrough sometimes.

Anders is just the right amount of cray cray for me.

Eh, yes, I have this problem too.
I romanced Fenris first, both friendly and rivalry (and was a bit disappointed that really the romance doesn't change much at all, but whatever).

Then I went for Anders, I liked it in Awakening but my Warden had Zevran so...it's hard to replace him :P
Well, in DA2 I simply cannot romance anyone else now. The other romances don't have the same intensity
Merril I'm happy to have her as a rival, I think for her it's the best thing to do, it's like I'm helping a friend and it doesn't appeal me at all as LI. Too much naivete...
Isabela I had to try hard to like her aready. I understood she is capable of good feelings, she cares and has even some really intelligent comments but...no way, she could be a good friend to laugh with, but nothing more.

Nothing compares to Anders and his impossible love for Hawke...you might like it or not, but he loves you xD
If only he could be in the dialogues a little bit more funny, like he is with Varric in the banters...

Yup, he totally ruined me for anyone else . Merill feels too much like a little sister to me, Isabella is fine for a fling but I can't imagine being seriously interested in her, even with the (apprently) good heart under the significant bosom, Fenris I used to hate, because of his hatred for mages and his lack of interest in anything but his own wronging - I don't hate him any longer and I'd even like for him to be happy with someone, just not my Hawke. Even if I could get with Aveline I think of her as an older cousin or an auntie now.
And I'm not even going to discuss Sebastian.

I'm currently struggling to ignore Anders in Act 2 long enough to make it with Fenris first, it's paaaainful, I know that passion and panting is just around the Darktown corner but I can't have it yeeet :(

You can do it Ninche! Just think of it as your reward. I like the dynamic of romancing Fenris first and it'll definitely be my proper canon because well... Anders warned you off and then gets to see you and Fenris together and gets even more insanely jealous/in love with you.

Has Anders ruined me for other romances? Yes and no.

Yes, in that he was the first one I romanced. So I have a sentimental fondness for his romance and I definitely think it's the one with the biggest impact. I find myself comparing the other romances and nothing about them seems to stack up. That mostly comes down to personal preference (I like Anders the most of the LIs and I also like everything he says more when it comes to the romance).

That said, no he hasn't completely ruined me for other romances because I do have Hawkes that are romancing other LIs. If I want to roleplay some of them correctly, I just can't see them all falling for Anders. I can't see my "I just don't give a damn" rogue putting up with Anders intensity, politics, or any of it.

So Anders will always be my favorite romance and will probably end up as the most romanced, but he certainly hasn't stopped me from branching out if it fits the character. Mostly what the Andersmance has made me do is replay my canonHawke a million times because I like that specific relationship the most.
