Well, unless they're the player character. Am I right, femHawkes and femSheps?

Oh, don't even get me started. Never mind the lack of advertising/features using Lady Hawke, most of the pre-release commentary from devs was about how hot she was. I mean...it's true, but it still feels disrespectful in a way.

to have a crush on your own characters... surely there's a masturbation joke in there somewhere?

Or a Pygmalion one if you want to impress the lit teachers around you.

i confess i had to look that up. :pinched:

Well, at least they played/showed her in some of the promotional stuff and actually acknowledged her existence? Lolsob. How sad is it that we have to be happy with what little we can get? I didn't even end up liking femHawke but it's a matter of principle. Come on now, marketing <_< Then again... press a button, something awesome happens.

Can we all agree that the marketing for DA:2 sucked then?

Also the marketing team needs to stop marketing games like its 1998. Times have changed.

More women play games now then they did ten years ago. The average age for a console gamer is 27.

Gamers 45-60 is a growing a market.

They need to rethink how they advertise games.

They need to do better market research instead of relying on data methods from 1998:wizard:

I was actually pleased with the amount of Lady Hawke we saw pre-release.  Of course, none of it was "official" marketing stuff that the masses at large were exposed to.  It seemed mostly to appease the hardcore fans here around the forums, but I appreciated it all the same.

If only FemShep got SOME of that.  I had friends over for my birthday a few days ago and when they arrived I was wrapping up ME2's Suicide Mission.  Had this conversation with one of them:

Her:  So you don't have to play as that Shepard guy?
Me: What?  I am playing as Shepard
Her: That girl?
Me: >_<

But that's a rant for another topic.  I really miss Anders these days, but I'm waiting for the next patch to see if any of the import dialogue bugs get fixed before I start another playthrough.

While I normally don't jump on the Blame EA bandwagon, considering the marketing of their games *cough*Dead Space 2*cough* I'm going to go ahead and say the parent company just might have something to do with the way BioWare advertises their games. I buy their products despite their ads, not because of them, and that can't be the result they're looking for.

Same for me to an extent, and also what I like from youtube videos and such, usually pretty good review comments.

Do marketers fear advertising to us will chase away the little boys? I don't get it. Can't they play the ******-n-explosions ads for guys, and the other ads for us? It's not an either/or. There is such a thing as directed marketing.

My husband isn't scared of femShep, he plays femShep! He would be upset by a game that left women out. He probably makes way more money than some man-child too. Do EA marketers not do market research?
edit: Not that he has anything against ****** and explosions, he's quite fond of both.

Stuck in the 50s marketers are annoying me, so here's some Andersbutt and guy-on-guy smoochies, just to be contrary.

LOL oh anders butt, none can resist it.  I agree when there is the option to play male or female, the "canon" in the trailers are always the male.  Like Fable.  It would be nice if they used the female version.  Granted I think men still dominate women in terms of being gamers.  But our numbers are growing and we would like to see a woman in the trailer sometimes instead of the hot male that we wish was a  romance option and not who we get to play.

The Tomb Raider, Perfect Dark and Metroid titles are all popular. They are all single player games with a single main character. A single main character who is a woman. A woman who kicks butt and takes names.

All of these games started in the era when the female gamer was more elusive than leftover cheese in the Denerim Palace after King Alistair's coronation. Clearly, men have no issue playing badass female characters.

Give the girls some credit. Make them look badass in trailers too.

Please?

Oh yeah, I know.  I am talking about when there is the option to play both male and female.  They default to the male option.

My husband is secure that he can play both male and female characters. He also did NOT get offended when Anders hit on him.

I have no problems playing male characters....

Now the weirdest thing my husband I share is that we both can't romance Merill. She just bothers us in different ways.

I can play a female and romance Isabela but I can't with Merill and neither can my husband.

And I have NO problems playing a male Hawke and romancing Anders. :o

You also have to remember, despite these being strong female characters, they were strong "male-marketed" female characters.

I'd MUCH RATHER they make a game headlined by an Aveline Valen type figure, then a Lara Coft type woman. Mind you, I do -not- disaprove of my female main character being ATTRACTIVE. I mean, you can all see my dark-haired hawke, and If I could get ME2 to let me take screen shots, I'd post up pictures of my over-the-top blond-bombshell sexy-as-hell-and-just-as-deadly FemShep.

But I'm pretty sure guys aren't going to die if our amazingly attractive main character was a strong woman. Who needs men to swoon over? Give me a tough lady who would sooner kick my ass then take me to bed. And maybe a little bit of taking me to bed, too..

BUT I SHOULD HAVE TO WORK FOR IT, DAMNIT. And maybe take a beating..

this.. is why I loathe Aveline mods. The ginger-haired freckle faced woman is BEAUTIFUL. Not in a conventional beauty way, but in a "I want her to kick my ass" kind of way.

I'd totally be a lesbian for Aveline. <3

I think at some point that armor might of been the general champion armor.
But Carver was in one commercial where Beth died. But really the males almost never get any kind of marketing time. Especially the more story centric males. <_<

FemShep is jealous of FemHawke. At least she got some coverage. At least, more than just a couple obscure screenshots a couple days before release.

...But at the end of the day, I can see why it'd be easier to typically use the male version of a character rather than a female apart from needing to appease to straight boys. Such as the community here, there will always be something wrong with a female character. Always.
When the first screenshot of femHawke was release, people automatically disliked her because the way her chin looked in the angle. Don't get me started on the Isabela hate. <_<

^Aveline is gorgeous. I don't understand why her face needs to be changed into generic "pretty" girl. Even Anders isn't attractive in a conventional way either.

I found Anders to very attractive, I felt he had a homely(?Not sure that is right word I want), though again this is all on personal opinions.  Seriously him and Alistair only blonds I will ever love.

Also Aveline is more then fine the way she is.  I joke about her being more manly then my male Hawkes but I do love her.

Well I loved all of them the way they are even Isabela.  I like default femHawke I thought she was beautiful, but that again is me.

Oh I get that. But everybody likes attractive people. At the end of the day, pretty things are pretty, and male or female, we like looking at pretty. (And I'm aware of how superficial that sounds, but asthetics are important. Sort of). Pretty of any kind has more appeal than not-pretty.

What I was trying to say was that men clearly don't object to playing female characters when she's a strong, take-no-prisoners etc. kind of woman. So why would they object to marketing that includes that kind of woman? Especially when they don't HAVE to play as a woman.

I'm not entirely sure what I just said made any sense, but I tried.

As an aside: I also can't stand Aveline mods. But that's neither here nor there.

I rather dislike mods that mod my companions in games. They were designed painstakingly by a crew of people JUST for us. Why on earth would ANYONE want to mod them? Seriously. Just because I don't find X character "to my perfect dream specifications" in what a computer game character should look like, doesn't mean I would destroy someone's hard work.

Each character is ART, and by modding it, ... it... it feels like they are basically defacing the Mona Lisa to me. @_@

Its dirty, and wrong. I want to punch people who use the White-Isabella mod. And the people who made it, too. Grr.
