Bethany tells Merrill, "my father died in the Blight". She is not talking about the sickness because the text capitilizes the B, and if she meant the sickness, she would have said "died from the blight"

Bioware messed up somewhere. Malcom couldn't have died in the Blight before the Blight even started. Either the codex or Bethany is wrong. Or maybe Bethany is lying to cover up that her father's cause of death was shameful.

Hmm, good point.
I wonder if he died in a Darkspawn raid before the Archdemon awoke. We know they do occasionally come to the surface between Blights, so maybe Malcolm was caught in a hurlock raid on Lothering, or another village or farm nearby. To a fairly sheltered family, it might not matter that technically the Fifth Blight hadn't begun: darkspawn killing people with an Archdemon showing up just three or four years later might as well be a Blight to them.

Still, you'd think Hawke would mention something about it when they go into the Deep Roads, especially if a sibling becomes infected. "I've already lost my father and sister to these bastards; I'm not letting them take Carver too!" would have been suitably overwrought.

Oh crap, top.

^^^ I agree with the bolded - and I think I'm right in saying the darkspawn had been popping up in the Korcari wilds for sometime? So in that part of Ferelden they may well have felt the Blight before it really started. Heck, in DA:2 it says that the Warden defeated the Archdaemon before it really started, so two years of "official" pre-Blight could easily be preceeded by many more years of isolated attacks which appear to be part of a whole.

I'm beginning to wonder if Malcolm was with his family when he died or if he'd gone off to fight somewhere? Perhaps the vagueness is that they don't really know what happened to him? Or am I just going a bit conspiracy theorist now. Posted Image

Edit - errr... ANDERSBUTT - phew! Nearly went off-topic there

For those of you who are interested, Atlas is finally complete. Now that my angst plot bunnies have been satisfied, maybe I can get back to that Malcolm/Leandra fluff.

Ohhh that was beautiful ^^ Totally sent shivers down my spine!

'She couldn't let him do that, couldn't allow him to place the love of one person above the chance to change a world.'

I take so much pleasure in the way you've turned this around, I wish the game allowed us alot more flexibility and possibilitites in the Anders romance and Act 3 in general. You've given their relationship this sort of realistic complexity that is missing from the game - and I loved reading your fic!

And as for Malcolm's death: If we want to be really dark and morbid (as would suit the game) we could imagine that for w/e reason he turned into an abomination and had to be put down by his own children - and the Blight thing is just the cover up the family decided on. But ugh I made myself sick just typing that.

I hope it was something like an illness or an accident. (Was it in Miri's fic that he died when the tree he was trying to chop down fell on him? That was so absurdly sad it was actually pretty funny =X I blame the english for my sick sense of humour)

Yeah...I wish there was a way to play it as a Hawke who WASN'T totally horrified by the Chantry Jenga.  Of course I can understand why; most Hawkes aren't that dedicated to the mage cause or that indifferent to acts that could be construed as terrorism.  But at least in my mind, the dialogue options I picked in-game didn't contradict my head-canon that my Hawke knew what was going on all along, and chose not to stop him.

Psht.  I thought that was funny too.  Most of us here on the Anders thread share your off-beat sense of humor

And like others have said, I don't think Malcolm's death was anything terribly dramatic.  There are more things to die of in a medieval world like Thedas than blood magic or templars; facial tumors, tree, infected papercut, explosive vomiting from some horrible disease, dinner gone wrong...take your pick :P

I know Bethany says Malcolm died of the Blight, but since I pretty much can't get past the arrival in Kirkwall with anything but mage!Hawke, I never get those lines. And the Codex suggests a different timeline. Honestly, I always imagined he died of something like the Wasting or another sickness. Something natural, at any rate, since I imagine there'd be a lot of swearing of vengeance if the templars had gotten him or such.

Oh, and thank you so much everyone who said nice things about ADRL last night! I would've responded again then, but I fell asleep.

Just finished reading and I love it.  The birthday scene was absolutely adorable and I love that Orsino gave her a bday present.  I also loved where you stopped it and didn't include the very last scene... it left it open (even though I'm pretty sure I know what your Hawke's decision would have been when it came to that very special apostate).  ;) Anyway, long-winded way to say... I love you. <3 Oh... and your story of course. :wizard: Nice recovery there aqua.

By all means... teach me your ways.  I put up the [ img] url [ /img] (minus spaces) and did the BBCode (because I didn't do that last time and felt like a friggin' ******)... so I probably did something else un-code'ish.  If you figure it out (which I am sure you will), I will give you a BIG internet hug.  ^_^

Ohh all of Miri's stories are amazing! Here's the one with the tree: miri1984.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3ex2wa
If you haven't read any of them, do!!

And,

I officially tried romancing Fenris for the FIRST time and FAILED miserably. Apprently his friendship wasn't quite high enough to trigger any romantic options in my estate after his personal quest. So now I feel like an idiot for trying in the first place, I'm definitely not going to go back to Act 1 to be mean to mages in order to make him like me more. I'd try a rivalmance but he doesn't hate me enough. SIGH
It's like he can tell I'm not genuine

Oh man, it's so hard not romancing Anders. Every time the man speaks I want to molest him. But I can't help dragging him along for a lot of missions. The worst thing is I'm still early Act 2 with this Hawke so I could still romance him. Agh, the torture. :crying:

I'm going to have to run around as canon Hawke for a bit to make the world right again.

Thank you!
And you can still romance him once you get your friendship up high enough after his personal quest.  I thought mine was glitched too, but I did some more stuff (dragged him along) to get his approval up and then went to my house to do some enchanting randomly and he was there... ready for smooching.  Same works for rivalry I believe... although a friend of mine said it *might* be glitched because it didn't work for him, so I don't know.

Edit: didn't read the part about not having the romance options... I guess it won't work then. :(  Fenris's romance was gloriously bugged for me (I did it before the patch so I have no idea if any of it has been fixed) and took me going back an entire Act to fix it... pro-tip, don't sleep or flirt with Isabela if you are romancing Fenris.  <_<

Miri1984 has a long series of interconnected awesome fics, just can't remember in which chapter it was... but they are all awesome.

Also, if you are in a fic reading mood, I have an Anders story here that might keep you busy for a while:

Thanks Sable - My morning at work has been a lot more enjoyable! I love the way you've portrayed Anders (as much as I love the super-fox-kink versions of him) that portrayl really had some of the realities of someone with depression.

I also loved seeing it from the POV of a Hawke that knew what was going on - as much as I wanted that to be an option - I think the game is stronger for taking that player agency away from you. Largely you become champion due to fate/chance. You can choose which way to tilt your world, but the same stuff still happens to you. Deep Roads/ Arishok/ Jenga - All situations you're forced into and can only react to with a lesser amount of choice in the variables as time goes on. Actually, you could say as your ability to influence the events decreases the results of the events increase - leaving you with a Hawke that is increasingly powerless in the face of events despite their rise to power.

I'm feeling inspired to try my hand at a one shot now - see if I can't make myself even more miserable!
