Anders: What is it with you archers and your grandfathers' bows? Did none of you get along with your Fathers?

Anders... raises a good point, actually.

Come on, look at most companions and origins stories: practically everyone has either absent or awful fathers.

As opposed to Origins where everyone's mother was pretty much dead, discounting Flemeth and Eleanor, because you actually get to meet them.

I blame it on this generation growing up on Disney. Everybody's parents are dead or awful to them in Disney.

Haha I thought Anders and Fenris were a nice change from all the daddy issues male protagonists seem to experience alot. (Mummy issues as well I suppose) Instead we have hulk and woverine drama, grrreat

Tragically Anders clothes don't ripp :( and Fenris doesn't compare to Wolverine's badassry in my book

Oh I'm pretty certain Anders had daddy issues too, and he probably had some abandonment issues as well, but thankfully we only hear the briefest reference to that in the game.

Yeah, I agree. I'm pretty sure having your father consider you a curse qualifies as daddy issues. Not issues that come up much, but still.

Let's break this down!

Cousland: Happy family, yay!
Amell: Taken away from Revka, your mother. No mention of a father.
Tabris: dead mother, nice father
Mahariel: Orphaned
Brosca: no father, horribad mother
Aeducan: no idea, the one origin I never tried. Pretty sure dead mother and... your father exiles you?

Alistair: no parents, adoptive father shunts him off to the chantry.
Morrigan: no father, also FLEMETH.
Leliana: no mention of father, dead mother
Sten: Qunari don't count.
Zevran: orphaned
Wynne: lived in a barn until she got caught by templars or something. idek, she talks too much.
Oghren: unknown
Shale: ... does Wilhelm count as an adoptive father? Because ew.
Loghain: unknown  mother murdered, father dead.

Anders: both parents around, but father feared him once he turned out to be a mage.
Justice: The Maker doesn't love his children anymore.
Nathaniel: Daddy was a psychopath, mother was dead.
Sigrun: No idea.
Velanna: No idea, possibly given away like Merrill?

No idea about any of the DLC companions except Finn, who apparently gets along with his parents.

Hawke, Bethany, Carver: father died during teens, was evidently alright. Mother dies during game.
Varric: Father got them exiled from Orzammar, mother is dead.
Isabela: absent father, mother sold her.
Aveline: dead mother, has daddy issues
Merrill: given away to another clan at four years of age, has fraught relationship with the Keeper.
Fenris: doesn't remember, but we only hear about a mother and a sister. "Replacement" father was a sadist magister.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Never become a parent in Thedas. You'll either die or be terrible at it.

I don't know, romancing the guy your sister directly compares to your father opens up the window for pretty much the mother of all daddy issues >.>

Anders having abandonment issues is so my personal head-canon. I mean, who else sleeps with somebody for the first time and then asks to move in? It's adorkable coming from him, actually. Coupled with his comments about being ripped away from his mother, I figure he's had a history of being left. Or of doing the leaving, because he had to be willing to walk away from his friends/lovers in the Tower at the drop of a hat. Then there's the way he continually tries to push Hawke away until finally he snaps and succumbs. I'm guessing intimacy issues are at play here too.

*gasp* The damn thing never rips that's true! I just prefer messed-up-superheroes comparisons to sparkling vampire teenagers for example

@highcastle: Awww that's true the poor thing, I don't know if I should kiss him or mother him now. I'm suddenly reminded of a Placebo song: I'll be your father, I'll be your mother, I'll be your lover, I'll be yours.

Thankfully, I had Carver in my party and never heard that once.

I choose to pretend the daddy issues are not there.

You know because of you lot, I wouldn't have heard of the term "U-Haul Lesbian" still. But it does aptly describe Anders, lol.

Yep.

No babies for Hawke and Anders.  It seems to be a rule of Thedas that if you're a parent, you will a) be horrible at it B) die horribly or c) all of the above.

This made me lol for some reason.

Also, wouldn't that mean Anders now has SUPER daddy issues? He has his own issues and now Justice adds in the god of all daddy issues.

Hehehe it's pretty much David Gaider's explaination as to why he will never include birthing children as a plot ellement.

Doesn't that mean they are doomed to have children then? I'm pretty sure they have all of the above nicely covered. They are the perfect model of doomed Thedan parents.

Well, it's a good thing my Hawke and Anders aren't in any danger of that, unless they fall victim to some blood magic ritual :wizard:

@Triplight: I just learned a new phrase today!

I got to the point where I wanted a mod to change every dialogue tree with her to

1. "Griffons?"
2. "Griffons!"
3. "You're old, lady."
4. "jfc, shut up."

Really? He really ****ed up with the DR and Witch Hunt, then.
