As for Anders, he "was still considered only a reckless scamp by First Enchanter Irving, who thought his easy temper and sense of humor made him no true threat", so it's possible Irving leaned on Gregoir not to be too harsh on him.

I think Uldred was working with Irving on rooting out potential blood mages, right? Irving may have been protecting him.

And Greagoir wasn't bloodthirsty. I can easily see him being extremely frustrated with Anders, but unwilling to tranquil him, kill him or send him to Aeonar as long as he wasn't endangering anyone when he escaped and he always came back peacefullt. Which seems to be the case.

If I didn't already, I <3 forever for quoting that.

After playing through the mage origin recently, I'm convinced that Irving must have really liked Anders to keep him off Greagoir's **** list. Of course, Irving seems to want to protect all the mages in the tower, but when he learns of what Jowan is doing, he's determined to make his little Chantry sister lover go down with him, otherwise the guy would've been Tranquil already. I got the impression it was a way to rub Greagoir's face in the fact that the Chantry isn't infallible. Woo, Irving isn't a completely brainwashed sycophant!

Anders still hates him, though.

Someone on the forum speculated not long ago that maybe locking Anders up in solitary for a year was more than just a punishment - maybe they were hoping he would finally lose it and turn to demons or blood magic and justify the rite or an execution. I've got no idea how true that is or if it was Irving or Greagoir who came up with it. But a year in solitary seems like a rather harsh punishment - it's not like Anders was harming others in the tower - physically or poisoning their minds, why would they do it to him? And why does Anders hate Irving?

One of the first things he says when you click on him while you're out and about in Awakening is that he hates Irving. I don't think he elaborates, but it's likely easily explainable. Probably something to do with not letting him leave the Tower whenever he likes and always being there to reprimand him for leaving when he comes back.

Anders doesn't seem to have a fondness for any sort of authority figure, really. I suspect daddy issues.

Edit: yeah, locking him up in solitary for a year could have something to do with why he hates Irving, too.  It always surprises me that Anders stayed (mostly) sane afterwards.  I imagine Anders eventually crossed some sort of criminal line in his desperation to escape for the 6th time, necessitating the harsh treatment, but not harsh enough to become Tranquil or sent off to real mage prison.

Well, his father apparently had issues with his magic, so perhaps that's part of it. Honestly, though, if I had to guess why Anders hates Irving, I'd go with not protecting him from a year's worth of solitary confinement. That's kind of a big, traumatizing experience right there. And if Irving protected him in the past but couldn't or wouldn't get him out of that, I could see Anders taking it as a betrayal.

Edit: Darn your ninja edit!

He seems pretty ok with the Warden Commander...he's almost respectful, even. One theory that I like is that he dislikes Irving because Irving is a rare mage who commands enough respect, is well-liked and trusted enough to do something to improve the lot of mages but who plays the Chantry's game instead and uses desperate and/or innocent people as pawns.

I think the major distinction between the Warden Commander and any other authority figure is that he/she gave Anders freedom (or at least nominal freedom from the Circle), whereas any other was seeking to keep it from him in one way or another.  That would doubtless go a looooooooong way to earning his trust.  Before you increase his approval in Awakening, he doesn't really seem to care for the Commander, but he'll at least follow orders.

NO! MODDED ANDERS IS NOT WELCOME IN HERE! HISS :crying::crying::crying::crying:!

Modded anders makes me cry. He's so beautiful all by himself with his nose of doom and scruffyness and strawberry blonde half-pony! Why would you mod him!:crying:

No modded anders, unless its Meredanders, obviously. :D

This one intrigues me, actually, because it looks like Wolverine.  With chocolate between his eyebrows.  Or he's been in Hawke's Nutella.  [Did that sound dirty?]
