That PS3 shot... wow.  Just.  Wow.  Posted Image

Not that I cared much for Anders in DA:A.  My Warden grew to like him, after extensive exposure convinced her that there was something serious underneath the selfish, flippant shell.  (She was very serious and duty-minded, and didn't have a lot of patience for his joking.)  I always thought that he looked like a greased ferret (pointy face + glossy shell hair - all right, I know the hair was the graphic engine's fault), and there was a whiny undertone to Greg Ellis' voicing of him that was like nails on a chalkboard for me.

My first reaction to DA2 Anders was, "You look hot.  You sound hot.  Woah."  I cannot get enough of Adam Howden's voice work.  The little trembles make me go all trembly.  There's his fabulous outfit, the detailed facial animations, but the thing that most gripped me was his emotional intensity.  My canon diplosnark Hawke was drawn like a moth to a flame, and I even love the cheesy romance scene lines; they work for Anders because whatever he's feeling - whether the emotions are good or bad - he's always really, really feeling it.  And they work for my canon Hawke because his intensity is infectious.  Someday I'll get an aggrosnark run off of the ground and offer him a sandwich instead.

i like ellis's voice.  but howden does a good job

Hope I'm not too late D:

What made me love Anders? I think I'm going to repeat myself yet again, but this is how it went:

After Origins I kept telling myself I won't go for the super TRUE LOVE Li in DA2 but be more flirty and sleep around and maybe romance someone less stereotypically "the perfect man". So then someone caught the first glimpse of Fenris (he didnt even have a name bck then) and they started this whole cult for him so I joined in and was positively excited. I'd made my decision.

And then literally couple of days before DA2 came out (because I'd been so good with staying away from ANY spoilers) I randomly ventured into the character section of the official site and saw that Anders would be in it. I didn't think much of it and carried on. The game came out and everything was going fine - and then I heard of this grey warden refugee hiding in darktown - who was such a selfless and beloved healer the fereldens were willing to die to protect him. At first I didn't even realise it would be Anders, I'd almost completely forgotten he was in it. And then I walked in the clinic and had his little intro scene for the first time - and man, my mouth was suddenly dry and I was giggling like a retard. So what is it about Anders?

I think it was that combination of a martyr and a monster that did it for me before anything else - the fact that he'd been hurt and wronged and yet he helped others selflessly and fought for a cause. It was the whole Hulk thing and the desire to protect him (Oh yes I am really THAT easy). And as far as looks go I actually had a hard time finding anyone attractive in the game until Cullen came along. It's only after I got attached to the character and voice of Anders that I started finding him sexually appealing. And yes, the kiss scene definitely helped alot.

Also I'd decided to RP as this rough girl who didnt care about anyone and anything ecept her family and eventually closest friends. And completely honestly and without realising Anders actually changed my opinions and MADE me care so by the end of Act 3 I was passionately supporting mages and cussing the chantry. Of course I never took Anders too seriously, I didn't think he'd actually do something so... shockingly grand as blowing up the chantry, but it made sense for my character to follow her nature and choose to protect the person she loved over the diplomatic/politically sound choice of executing the person responsible.

Wow so sorry for the massive ramble, I love being asked Anders questions :D

Also, the dancing cat Anders thing is BRILLIANT!

So, with the PC Anders pic posted, I felt compelled to do this. It's yet another Awakening/DA2 comparison. It's not perfect since they're not at the exact same angle/facing the same direction, but it worked out pretty well. Please excuse the crappy, quick photoshopping.

Posted Image
To me the main differences seems to be better skin texturing on his face. The ear shape is also different. Other than that they look really similar to me.

Yup which didn't disappointed me because he was enhanced more in DA2 which made him look better in my opinion [not that I don't like his Awakening look...I still do like it]. I heard others were disappointed with Alistair and other DA:O characters because they didn't look the same as the old ones. Well I'm just happy with they way Anders look in DA2 now. Nuff said :D [I'm going to sleep I still have to wake up early and it's already 1:54am here!...I'll just read the posts after I'm done with my errands tomorrow morning]

^^ Pretty much this. I was playing through along the lines of, well, punishing people before they've done anything wrong doesn't really work, and there ought to be a better way, and generally being diplo and compromise to the max, but then he happened. And Fenris whined. A lot. Add to that the chantry annoyed me from the beginning of DA:O, and well, I ran off with him quite happily.

And yeah, I think it was probably the kiss that did it. I was quite happy to flirt with all available options (apart from Merril, who I still find creepily childlike), but I think it was his desire for Hawke that kind of tipped me over the edge. It was HOT. I'm one of these people that can look at a pretty boy, but I'll always be seduced by a personality. And once I was seduced, well then I grew to love his look. And there's been no turning back.

Hehehe it's funny how attraction works differently. My housemate and I try in vain to make the boys of the house comprehend the concept of someone being handsome and NOT attractive at all - and vice versa - with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton being the usual examples of both. So every time my boyfriend goes on a jealous hate rant against Anders, saying that he's not attractive at all, I list pretty much list everything we've mentioned and he STILL doesn't get it.

...but I think it was his desire for Hawke that kind of tipped me over the edge. It was HOT.

To this the boyf laughs and says: "So you love someone because they love you?" and I'm like:If he's crazily and inhumanly obsessive and I can be his obsession then HELLZ YES, we like commitment xD

And yes, there's definitely no turning back now and I look at him and he is the most beautiful pixel man in the whowe wowd ^^

And as for Anders comparisons: EESSH I didn't realise it was THAT different between the platforms D:

I'd always known I was going to romance Anders - it was clearly always going to be hot and tragic and I was completely uninterested in Fenris, Izzy or Merrill (although I now have a massive thing for Izzy like burning). I think I really knew I had it bad for Anders when he told Hawke no-one was going to lock him up: "You included".

The only spoiler I had for the game was who were LIs. I remember saying to my husband that Anders had better have more going on because he was cute in Awakening but I couldn't see him as a love interest.

Oh how little I knew.

This a million times. UST always does it for me, and Anders/Hawke has it in spades.

Also, does anyone know when the patch with the rivalmance but will be deployed? I want to play DA2 again, and am undecided whether I want to do friendmance (again) or rivalmance, but, I'd like the option. I just wish, as you've all stated before, that it could be "no to Justice" rather than "yes to templars." Which is why I might not be able to do it, but, damnit, I can try!

people can become more attractive as you get to know them and like them more. with pretty people you start off liking them simply because they are eye candy, then get bored.
i like anders more because he's no movie star. plus passion and devotion.

... um... why did i resolve to romance fen next time?  uh

Awesome answer! Posted Image

To the bolded part, that sums up my feelings pretty much exactly. I really liked Anders in Awakening (initially I didn't think much of the character, I liked him enough and he was funny, but it was only when I realised he was always in my party that I realised he was one of my favourite chacters out of both Origins and Awakening) and when I heard the direction the writers were taking him in in DA2, and then reading that horrifically tragic short story... it immediately made me feel enormous pathos for him and made me determined to RP a Hawke who would try to find a way to help him (I guess I'm *that* easy too Posted Image). I guess it's the tragedy aspect of a good man who essentially cursed both himself and a spirit he considered a friend because of good intentions that went horribly wrong. The fact that such an interesting character came in nice packaging was an added bonus Posted ImagePosted Image

i like friendmancing him more; anders is happy and that's all i care about. and if other poeple i don't know or care about also get blown up, well, that's their problem. not mine. nuh uh.

I'm really keen to do a rivalmance once the patch is out just because I'm a sucker for tragedy... of course saying that as soon as I finish a rival PT I'll be starting a friendmance PT because from the sounds of the rivalry path my little heart will be broken and will need some friendmanced Anders healing Posted Image

I think one of the reasons I feel so obsessed about this is that there was really no final conclusion at the end of DA2. The ending was really a beginning and I am dyyyyying to find out what happens next. Damn you BW for not having DA3 already out!!! With DAO there was a pretty good wrap-up while still leaving some threads open for later exploration. Additionally, since I got the Ultimate edition I was able to poke around at what happened afterwards via the DLC and DAA. With DA2 we are just lost in the dark. And unless you killed Anders (perish the thought!) there is no wrapping up with that plot, especially if you romanced him.

So, basically, we have no choice but to obsess and guess and ponder and hypothesize until BW puts us out of our misery by throwing some DLC at us or giving us DA3. They MUST have known what sort of an effect this was going to have on us and should have had DA3 really to roll out right away!!!! GAHHHH!!! ::DIES::

yeah... but who knows if they're going to continue the story. imo they will move on to something else for the main plot whilst having the mage revolution in the background. and hopefully the flags for importing our hawkes will work more reliably... i want lore that says hawnders lived on the run for years before going out in a massive red explosion together. no more separation of LI's!!! (in that regard morrigans romance was the most successful because you can live together forever. zev runs off on a murderous spree, leliana goes bat****tier and alistair spends all his time running the country when he should be amell's willing slave)

i hope they do give anders his own dlc. we can go to amaranthine to rescue ser-p and he now lives on the bed.

I agree that the situation with Anders probably wont be a big part (if any) of DA3, but the Mage Rebellion surely will have a big impact. I feel like the end of DA2 was the beginning of the chaos that will be DA3, even if DA3 doesnt focus solely on that part. The lack of any real conclusion to the situation at the end of DA2 has me standing on pins. I've GOT to know how this all plays out one way or another.

It's an awkward situation. Obviously I want a fully-fledged, in depth Anders as companion in DA3, but what I really dont want is an Alistair-style cameo.

If Anders survives Kirkwall, to my mind here is no way he could NOT be a massive part in the coming events, given that he instigated them. He's enemy number 1 and I just can't see him disappearing into some quiet, retired obscurity.

But this is what he's likely to get, if anything. I can't pretend that this doesn't bug me.

Need Andersmance help, stat!

I'm trying to rp a Hawke who starts with Fenris but moves on to Anders after Fenris leaves her hanging after their night together. But...this is possible, right? I'm at full rivalry with Anders (which is how I want it) but even though we get the flirty options after the Dissent quest, no That Kiss scene. I think I read that sometimes you don't get to initiate his romance until Act 3. Is it the case here? I even tried reloading and choosing the heartbreak option with Fenris to make certain that relationship was cut off, but it didn't have an effect. Halp?!

Well, I think I did, but I'm not going to do a replay unless I know not having flirted with him in his opening Act 2 conversation is the problem.  Not interested in doing that only to find out it was a waste of time.

@Silfren

If you did not flirt in Act 2, perhaps you could use a saved game editor to set the romance flag with Anders to "fix" the game?
