So, new topic: We know that Anders is not his real name. Anyone hazard a guess on what his real name is?

We dont know much about the Anderfels, but it seems to have a generally Visgoth/ German base.  Therefore, I would assume Anders' real name is somewhat germanic sounding.  Hmm.  Here's some info on the Anderfels:
http://dragonage.wik.../wiki/Anderfels

Now, the Anderfels are pretty far away from Ferelden.  How did Anders get in a Ferelden Circle?

He moved to Ferelden as a child or was born there. Gaider said his family was from there, not that he was.

I thought his parents moved him to Ferelden as a small child?

Hm, I cant really remember exactly.  Even if they did, that's quite a far way to move.  I wonder why?  I dont think it was to keep him safe from the Circle as I seem to recall reading that they gave him to the Circle right around when he first showed signs of magic.    Do you think his family was running from something else?  Or perhaps they are rich/ nobles who could afford such a move?

Well, the Anderfels is a pretty crappy place to be what with the number of blights that's happened there. Perhaps they went to Ferelden and out of sheer bad luck they chose yet another country that'll be affected by the blight.

Also his real name is Frederick.

I realize that this was already done in the Dragon Age series, but wouldn't it be interesting if Anders was heir to the Anderfels throne? Not an illegitimate son like Alistair, mind, but maybe sent away on purpose when his father discovered that he was a mage? The Anderfels is said to be a very religious nation; I'd imagine that the mere prospect of having a mage as a king would be enough to cause a civil war, or worse.

Yeah. I'm writing a fanfic along those lines right now. I've just been way too shy to post it, and I keep catching myself making lore mistakes.

Also, I named him Wilhelm, because he looks like a Will.

LOL. I realized I'd done that completely by accident once I was 20k words in and didn't feel like changing his name. Come to think of it, maybe in my next playthrough, I'll make a warrior Kate Hawke. ;) Dual-wielding mean looking axes, maybe. Or a crossbow warrior.

But if you look at the map of Thedas it seems like Ferelden is awefully far away just to move cuz the Anderfels suck.  Why not go to someplace closer like Orlais, Tevintir, or Nevarra?  It just seems like there should be a better reason.  If his family was poor that would be a veeeery long and arduous journey (and very costly) which would seem to make it nigh impossible....  hmmm....

We don't know much about the situation in the Anderfels. Famine, disease, and war are all good reasons why poorer families would make such a long journey. Or the Anders may be nomadic. I doubt our Anders came from a wealthy background. Some of his comments about Hightown and the nobility make it seem like he dislikes the upperclass. I personally don't see it.

He could dislike the upperclass because his family was.  Anyways, just hypothesising.  I just want to know more about the von Sparklefingers family.  ;)

I sort of had the same impression.

Also, just because he set fire to a barn doesn't mean that his father was necessarily a farmer. His family could be wealthy landowners.

He could. I just personally don't see it. Since we have little enough info to go on, my interpretation is no more or less valid than any others. But the fact that he seems to resent the entitlement of the nobility, the fact that his mother made him that pillow rather than have a servant do it, and his own general disdain for money and status suggest to me that he's not from a particularly wealthy background. I know there are plenty of explanations for why none of that thin, circumstantial evidence works, but I'm okay with that. I think we've had enough long lost princes and disenfranchised nobles. I like the idea of Anders coming from just a regular family and modest background.

He does mention " they find you in your little rat spit village".

I doubt he and his family were very wealthy.

I generally agree with you, highcastle.  I like the idea of Anders coming from a normal family and I think this is probably the case.  I am just curious as to why and how his family went to Ferelden.

I have to say I agree with highcastle here, I see him as just a regular kid shaped by circumstances. Nothing 'special' or 'different' except that he was born a mage, and that has shaped his whole life.

It's this line exactly that makes me feel as though his family are not well-off. That part of that conversation seemed to get his emotions going (and hence he started 'glowing') so to me I interpreted it as though he was drawing on his own personal experiences

The pillow thing isn't the best indicator.  Medieval women of all classes were required to know how to sew.  The nobility got to do the pretty things like embroidery.  A poor or lower class woman, however, might have less skill with such decorative frills and certainly wouldn't waste them on a pillow.

That's true, but the pillow, the "rat spit village" line and burning down his father's barn together are enough to lead me to believe that Anders' family were probably common village folk rather than nobility.

Well Karl was sent to Kirkwall because they needed new talent. Couldn't the same thing have happened to Anders? I don't know how easy it is to come by healers. So he was sent the the Fereldan circle? And because of his distaste for his father, he threw out his name, and had everyone there call him Anders.
