Ok so...I will need to friendmance him 15 more times to get rid of this sad feeling. D:

But I got the same impression romanced, even though he doesn't directly say it. Just....sad.

It's the "I will always love you" that sounds ominious to me... Posted Image

Edit: Sad Anders for the top

I'm into Act 3 of my current playthrough so no happy Anders to make me feel better at the moment *wibble* Might just look to an earlier happier save and just RP it as Hawke looking back on happy times... no wait, that's actually still kind of depressing!! Gah!

Ha! Luckily I'm right before Dissent in act 2:wizard: Yeah sadly friendmance kinda...drops off in Act 3, too bad really. I had that issue in Origins though, after you beded your LI, the romance seemed kinda non existant until the end parts.

@ipgd - dude, I hate you. I'd literally just done the The Key to Your Heart which is possibly my fave friendmanced scene, then watched that rivalmanced vid. Properly cried. :(

Bioware, seriously, the writing in this game is awesome.

He doesn't say the "I cannot live past this" line if you romance him (and I checked and he doesn't on any of the non-star options either), but I don't know if that means he's not still contemplating suicide or just doesn't want to say it in front of romanced Hawke. He still sounds just as depressed and "this is goodbye"ish, though.

I'd agree that he probably doesn't want to say it front of romanced Hawke - he'll just do a runner like the old DAA Anders and kill himself. And I'd cry more fangirl tears. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to rivalmance/ oppose him at this rate - at least not without a course of therapy afterwards.

Hey or maybe because he's in love with Hawke he wouldn't kill himself. Because 1-He loves her too damn much and doesn't want to stop. 2-Doesn't want to hurt her. 3-Believes that she will pull him through this yet again.

I'm in a super optimistic DA mood :wizard: Anders loves Hawke THAT much!

I'd say he expects to die in battle if you romance and/or befriend him. After all, in those cases you haven't completely shattered his world to the extent you do on the rival path.
And if you do... well, if you have a big enough influence to make him want to die, be a proper hero and make him want to live :)

I love you Ninche, that's totally what I'm going to believe *hugs*

I need some fluffy Anders/Hawkeness right now, just started Act 3 and the damn Justice quest is sat there staring at me. Now... I want Anders in super sexy revolutionary robes, but I don't want him telling me I've been a good friend for the end of the game. :(

... This is Anders we're talking about here >.> The Chantry was already basically a state-assisted suicide attempt, anyway.

I'd say he's even worse on the rivalry romance path, honestly. 6 years of being told you and everything you believe in sucks hurts a little bit more when it's coming from someone you're in love with. A 45 second pep talk isn't going to help with that kind of damage.

If he doesn't kill himself, Justice probably will, anyway. After siding with the templars, he's probably The Enemy.

Seconded. Not to mention that he'll DEFINITELY be gunning for Hawke. :pinched:

I still don't understand Anders siding with the Templars. Even if you romance it's still out of character.

i can't recall the exact line, and it was only one. something like "so you decided to support the mages after all"

it was a little different...

Think of it as he's so broken he does't trust himself to make his own choices anymore. So he hands his leash over to Hawke.

He's Ketojan.

Pretty much the entire rivalry path is all about breaking his spirit. He has about zero will to live by that point. He goes along with whatever Hawke says because he doesn't trust his own judgment anymore.

I wouldn't say it drops off. Remember the Justice quest is a pretty powerful moment. I just played this part yesterday again, where Hawke demands to know if there ever was a potion and Anders admits there wasn't, then tries to blackmail Hawke into going to the Chantry anyway. Only on the romance path does Hawke get to say, "Loving someone doesn't mean agreeing with everything they say."

So the relationship is very much wrapped up in Anders' personal quest. And once it's over, Anders knows it's only a matter of time before he's dead (he sees no other outcome at this point), and I think he tries to distance himself from Hawke a bit. The post-Justice quest has that, "I told you I would break your heart. Just know it breaks mine to do it."

I don't see the romance as dropping off, as much as: here are two people who love each other but are slipping away. It's an anti-romance in many ways, and I absolutely love it. To me there's so much emotion in the pain of loving someone and watching it all fall apart anyway.

Okay, now I really wish I had this game on PC rather than Xbox. Just came back into the Hawke estate in Act 3, and Anders is downstairs because of the dog interaction, and now Isbella's quest is kicking in, and whenever the camera goes back to Hawke, it looks like Anders is stood right behind her <3
Ahhhhhhh... DA2, you know when I need some Anders affection.

Edit
@ Highcastle - It's like he's pulling away entirely and the communication just disappears from the relationshipl. I spend my whole time just wanting to slap him and tell him to talk to Hawke - it's incredibly realistic and frustrating.

I'm sure people's Hawke's will react differently to it, but to me at least it's a relationship worth pursuing for all the good there is. You don't (or shouldn't in my books anyway) just stay with someone for the good times, if you love them you're with them through the bad as well.

Oh, I really like the way the romances were done in DA2 compared to Origins don't get me wrong, but tbh, the only reason I do the rival path is for the extra bits I get in act 3 (and the kiss if I side with Templars). I just wish there was a tiny bit more, even if just a single added conversation, in Act 3 for friendmance.

I get that, I do. I adore Anders and I'd love the chance for more interaction. I just think the backing off is intentional, and it might not be in character for a friendmanced Anders to have more conversations after Justice. He's trying to give Hawke space, and he's coming to terms with what he views as his inevitable death. Granted, much of this is my own personal head canon after writing A Distant Ray of Light, so I might be just a wee bit biased.

And I will concede I have absolutely no defense for why he and Hawke don't get one more kiss in the Gallows. Argh!

I spread his Justice stuff through Act 3 when I friendmance him, and get that last heartbreak talk right before heading to the final stuff. It just works better in my head :)

Yeah no gallows kiss sucks. Badly. You could die...no reason you can't at least give a little "I love you" kiss :(

Yeah, I like to do the Chantry bit right before the close of the Act. It fits better with my personal time line of events, and there's no reason for Anders to wait very long after planting the Chantry mojo before kicking things into gear.

And if you kill off your sibling, you can get a bit more Anders loving in the Best Served Cold quest. It almost makes sacrificing Carver worth it. Almost.

I sacrificed Bethany on that playthrough. It was my Anders rival, and I really would have had a hard time siding with Merrydeath (not that is wasn't already hard) with my sister as a circle mage or even alive.

I would of been more puzzled if he did kiss my Hawke at the gallows at the end of the friendship path.

Agreed. And the rivalmance kiss looks to me like a goodbye.
