True! Although Isabela has to help with Fenris.

Wandering in to prove I'm not dead: just doing grad ceremonies and flunking studying for finals.

Let's make this ontopic. Uh. Anders likes cats and discarded panties.

Pffff, there's no challenge to stealing panties that were thrown away. He takes them while his victim sleeps.

Hell, he and Isabela have turned it into a game. He's to the point where he can take them off with his teeth and slap another pair on without Hawke ever waking up.

I'll bet he can steal them from someone who is still awake. He just sparklefingers them right off.

Or, you know, he waggles his eyebrow and there's no need to steal. Every pair of panties in a hundred miles comes flying off.

Yes! This right here!

Without the merger, but with Justice along as a friend and co-conspirator, do you think Anders would have still blown up the chantry?

I don't think he would have. Awakenings Anders ran from everything and was only really concerned with his own freedom and didn't like the risked involved in putting his neck on the line for full mage freedom. His reply to Justice about not wanting to die over freeing his people said so much about his state of mind at that point and time.

I think Anders, at the end of Awakening, probably did want to do something finally. But he also knew he didn't have the discipline or the focus to do it. Merging with Justice gave him the intensity and focus to actually do something. The unfortune part of that is it also made him go over the edge because of Justice's intensity.

Honestly, and I have no proof to back this up, I think Anders changed behavior had less to do with Justice and more of that the writer just didn't like Anders' original personality, and merely used Justice as an excuse for that.

I don't know, I think they changed his personality way too much to justify other than "We wanted him this way instead"
Again, no proof at all. And he's also my favourite DA character of all time anyways, so yeah.

I have wondered this too, but I can only imagine keep a spirit physically in you msut be tiring and would wear on your personality.

Who knows maybe they did think he was to laid back then they wanted in Awakening.

In DAA, Anders went on and on about the plight of mages ad nauseum. He was just funnier about it.
"Most people like being kicked in the head to wake up. Me, I'm just so fussy."
"What you people know about justice would fit in a thimble."
"I want a banquet and the right to shoot fireballs at templars."
Just about every time he speaks in DAA, he's talking about mages. In fact you can call him out on it, to which he responds that he only doesn't talk about it when he's eating, or during sex.

I can only imagine that sharing yourself with a spirit of Justice, constantly demanding...justice, would limit your ability to use humour as a defense mechanism.

Hey, I've got a question for my fellow Anderastians. Is it possible to dump Merrill and move on to Anders? I know that it is possible to do the reverse, but I heard somewhere that Merrill is a bit of a "juggernaut" and shuts down all other romance possibilities.

I'm still trying to do my pro-templar run, and the only way I've been able to even get this far is to do it with a character who is a total jerk. I was thinking that he might start out with Fenris, then have a fling with Isabela, then dump Merrill, and finally settle into a nice Anders rivalmance. I'll skip the Merrill step if it means no Anders. I don't think I could do it without Anders, even in a rivalry.

Ugh, this will definitely not be my canon playthrough.

You don't believe the poster that claimed that Anders' personality change was due to writer tastes rather than plot decisions, that Anders went on about mage rights so extensively in Awakenings, or that Anders refrained from talking about mage freedom while eating or during sex?

The last one gave me some really entertaining mental images.

... Wat.

Anders in Awakening existed as a point of reference for the affects of the possession. He was specifically created in order to demonstrate how much better off both he and Justice were before they merged. His arc is by all accounts a huge downer and I have no idea where you got the impression the writers thought he was better that way, since the entire point is that he isn't.

Aaaand here's the anvilicious foreshadowing if you missed it:

    * Anders: Why do spirits seek out mages? I've always wondered.
    * Justice: You speak of demons. I am not a demon.
    * Anders: Aren't demons simply spirits with unique and sparkling personalities?
    * Justice: They have been perverted by their desires.
    * Anders: But what do they want from mages?
    * Justice: Perhaps they wish the same as I: silence.

    * Justice: I understand that you struggle against your oppression, mage.
    * Anders: I avoid my oppression. That's not quite the same thing, is it?
    * Justice: Why do you not strike a blow against your oppressors? Ensure they can do this to no one else?
    * Anders: Because it sounds difficult?
    * Justice: Apathy is a weakness.
    * Anders: So is death. I'm just saying.

    * Justice: I believe you have a responsibility to your fellow mages.
    * Anders: That bit of self-righteousness is directed at me?
    * Justice: You have seen oppression and are now free. You must act to free those who remain oppressed.
    * Anders: Or I could mind my business, in case the Chantry comes knocking.
    * Justice: But this is not right. You have an obligation.
    * Anders: Yes, well... welcome to the world, spirit.

    * Anders: Are you saying that you could become a demon, Justice?
    * Justice: I said no such thing.
    * Anders: You said that demons were spirits perverted by their desires.
    * Justice: I have no such desires.
    * Anders: You must have some desires...
    * Justice: I have none! Desist your questions!

    * Anders: I apologize, Justice. I didn't mean to suggest you would become a demon.
    * Justice: I should certainly hope not.
    * Anders: I just wondered what relation there is between spirits and demons. Demons are a worry to any mage.
    * Justice: I do not know what makes demons as they are. Such evil angers me, but I do not understand it.
    * Anders: Well, I hope you never come to understand.
    * Justice: I as well, mage. More than you could possibly know.

    * Velanna: What will happen to you once Kristoff's body has fully decayed?
    * Justice: I do not know. Perhaps I will be drawn back to the Fade?
    * Velanna: Or remain here, bound to the tiny motes of dust that once were Kristoff.
    * Justice: Do you think that's possible?
    * Velanna: I know less about this than you. How securely is your spirit bound to this body? Can you leave it?
    * Justice: I could, if I chose to.
    * Velanna: Do you want to leave it?
    * Justice: I... do not know anymore.

    * Velanna: It seems you actually like this world.
    * Justice: I do. I have had experiences I cannot even begin to explain.
    * Velanna: A pity that you'll soon fall apart.
    * Justice: I could find and inhabit another corpse. A female body might offer a different perspective, wouldn't you think?
    * Velanna: If I die in your presence, you stay away from my body, you hear me?
    * Justice: Your objection is noted.

    * Nathaniel: Will you ever need to switch bodies, Justice?
    * Justice: I did not even wish to possess this one. Why would I switch to another?
    * Nathaniel: You might need to. Unless you wish to look even more obviously like a corpse.
    * Justice: I...would prefer not to think of it.

    * Justice: This... thing you spoke of. Switching bodies.
    * Nathaniel: Not a favorite topic of yours, I take it?
    * Justice: Would such a thing be permitted? Would it not be considered... abominable?
    * Nathaniel: If they're dead, it's not as if they need the body, Justice.
    * Justice: But I can still feel the man who once lived. I know his body, his... It is not just a body.
    * Nathaniel: That's...good, isn't it? I'd rather you felt that way.
    * Justice: Perhaps you are right.

    * Nathaniel: What if you found a living body to possess?
    * Justice: Even if I knew how, I would not possess the living. Such is an act for demons.
    * Nathaniel: What if the person were willing?
    * Justice: Why would a mortal ever allow such a thing?
    * Nathaniel: For life. For love. Perhaps together, you can do what they cannot do alone. If you gave instead of taking, I would consider you no demon.
    * Justice: It is...something to consider. Thank you, Nathaniel.

OMG, ipgd, all the times I played Awakenings, and I never got that banter. Talk about a +5 Sword of Truthiness. Or Foreshadowing.

Not that I doubted that Anders was so preoccupied with mage rights in Awakenings, of course. He talked about them enough to leave an impression.

The gist of the original post was "I have this opinion, with no evidence to back it up."

Yeah, all that foreshadowing (especially the Justice/Nathaniel) conversations make me think that they (or at least Gaider) were planning the Dragon Age II events all along.

(Though I personally think Anders is better with Justice, too.)

Argh. I want to rival Anders with my male mage, but I feel like the biggest hypocrite ever.

Anders: FREEEDDDOM!
Hawke: *wanders around shooting fireballs at bandits/Tal Vashoth/street gangs* But mages are dangerous! The templars have a point!
Anders: :pinched:

I might just give in and be buddies with him.

Edit: Not intending to offend people with mage Hawkes who do rival him. Just my opinion. =]

Berelinde - yeah, I was the same. My pro-templar was a jerk I couldn't identify with. I had him romance Fenris. I guess a lot of the reason I didn't reall "feel" the Fenris romance was because I didn't like my own Hawke. And yes, he slipped Anders the old murder knife. Ugh.

My pro-mage Hawkes (who romance Anders) I like very much, though.

Regarding your question, both the Merrill and Anders romances shut down all others so the answer is no. You can diddle Fenris or Isabela and then move on to one of the others, but not Merrill.

Actually, you can bang all four of them, as long as you kick either Merrill or Anders out after their sex scene. They only shut down each other's romances if you have one of them move in.

And kicking out Anders is hilarious.
