It could have just been on a primitive timer or a LONG fuse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petard
A common bomb used to blast holes in a wall or a gate in the medieval era.

It used a long fuse so that the people could split and run for their life, what with them being trained individuals. At the very least they had to have enough time to run to a safe distance so that they would not be hurt.

Anders could have just given it a slow burning fuse and been lucky when he came upon Hawke and Co.

anders is a mage; it makes sense to me that he would use the talents so easily at his disposal. i support the staff banging theory

Care to estimate how far Lowtown is from the Chantry though?
From what we have seen mages really can only affect things that they can see directly.

The simplest solution is usually the best solution.

we could see the explosion! *misses point*

i didn't see a fuse, and i saw anders banging his staff. the mage underground was decimated as i understand so there were no accomplices. either way we have not much evidence.

suck on a fireball!  :pinched:

edit for topsies

I lean towards the staff-banging theory myself (and that's in no way related to the fact I wrote it that way in ADRL and thus refuse to be disproved; nope, that's just crazy talk). :)

And that picture up top was my wallpaper for quite sometime.*grins*

I've always seen the staff banging as the trigger for the explosion. It's just too neatly timed otherwise.

Totally staff banging = remote trigger. Possibly using the magic design of the city (Enigma of Kirkwall) to help path the magic to detonate it. Besides, the staff banging is *hot.*

I agree with him triggering the explosion magically. Considering the blast itself seemed a bit supernatural, no reason why the trigger method would have to be something mundane.

Plus, Anders is a mage. You have the built in excuse that a wizard really did do it. No sense in getting remote fuses and such involved.

It's even hotter with the naked lady staff. Okay I lied. I can't keep a straight face when it's the naked lady staff

Simplest answer is that it was magic. That he was able to time the explosion to a crux moment which he had no control over suggests he was able to remotely trigger it. Added to the fact that there were several different types of explosives that we come across, his interest in Sandal's exploding enchantments, and has been mentioned the magical nature of the explosion all suggest that rather than a fuse or some mundane way which involves too much fiddling, timing and general faffing about, it was magic.

As far as I'm aware there is no suggestion that magic cannot be used over a distance - the banging of the staff reminds me of in battle 'ground pound'-esque magic moves. His target would have just been some distance away.

Edit

In other news, I just found this pic and I had to take a moment. :pinched::blink::wub:

It's called Malcolm's Honour and it's in the Mage DLC pack.

What makes it more awkward is that I read a theory about the figure at the top being Leandra. And now I can't look at it without imaginging my Noah blushing and thinking, Yeah, there's no way I'm using this, Dad.

hahahahaaaa! Leandra had a booty when she was younger then! She looks a bit too up and down in the game to have that figure.

I've just been reading through the magepack codicies and I really hope we get a book or a DLC about Malcolm. His history is so purposefully shrouded they can't just leave it like that!

Highcastles is m!HawkexAnders - but it's awesome.

Err... a couple of others not already mentioned:

dpMegger's Musings - collection of one-shots.
Mandamcmoo's A Rainy Night - one shot.
Mutant0's Forgiveness - one shot, you'll probably want a box of tissues for this one.

I wake up way too early with a headache, take something, figure I'll read a bit wait for meds to kick in, maybe try to go back to sleep later.  Oh look fic links, even better one shots, ooh I haven't read that one.
"Forgiveness"
... darn you woman
:crying::crying::crying:

I know this is really late and off topic, but I had an unusually large influx of readers on Forgiveness yesterday and then I was told that they came from here so naturally I had to stalk the pages to find out how many more people I got to cry.

And then I had to comment so I could thank everyone a million for reading my silly fic. I used to lurk this thread like nobodies business so it makes me super happy that people from the magical Anders thread read it. *hugs the thread*

That is all.

*goes back to lurking*

That was me that told you! I'm glad you stopped by! And, as I said before, I love your story and you made me cry.  Definitely captures the Anders romance.

Malcolm has totally turned into one of my favorite characters... even though most of what I know about him lies in my imagination.  I wish they would put out a book, or maybe even a DLC (fat-chance, right?) about him.  I WANT TO KNOW.

Edit: Just noticed you said you wished they would put out a book or DLC as well... redundancy for emphasis, right?

Gaider's next book is going to be about Wynne's son who is definitely Malcolm

I BELIEVE

But where has he come from with the whole "Freedom's price is never cheap" thing?

That would be awesome though ipgd. I've half convinced myself that the origin families from DAO are all interconnected somehow and we're going to see the same names turning up again and again in heroic and championesque situations.

Could the figure on the staff be Andraste? I don't know how much faith Malcolm had, but still ... yeaaaah, think I prefer that to it being Leandra. Either that, or just some kind of generic representation of freedom...

I gave the staff to Anders in my current playthrough as I'm romancing him and it just seemed very appropriate - but if I do a future mage playthrough where I'm not I'd keep it for Hawke. I like that it has a unique design - so many of the staffs in the game look the same.

Given the whole torch fire-hair thing on the back, it is probably Andraste.

Still, Naked Mom Staff is hilarious.

Which, given Anders' reaction to the statue of Andraste at Vigil's Keep, makes giving him the staff even more hilariously creepy that it is if you pretend it's Leandra.

As much as I would LOVE for it to be Malcolm, didn't Wynne say that her son would be about Alistair's age? Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but she said something like that.... By the way, is Wynne even still alive in the DA:II Universe?
