@Giggles_Maniacally: Check out Kalthorine's blog. He has guides for all three acts.

@CalJones: The rivalry romance is the most depressing thing I have seen in a video game. Or in fiction. Your character actively breaks another human being. As Amondra says, discussions on this subject quickly turn into arguments, and after playing through act 3 in its entirety today, I'm in no mood to debate, let alone argue. Fans of the rivalry favor it because they are urging Anders to fight for his own mental sovereignty, but at this point, I don't think it's possible. Marethari tells you that even if you did manage to drive out the demon, the soul would be too damaged to survive. If she's right, it's already too late for Anders. I waited forever for the patch that would enable my rival Hawke to sail off with Anders, but I now understand that it would have been kinder for Anders... and less painful for the player... to murder knife him. If you choose the humorous dialogue option in the Gallows Courtyard, Anders tells you himself that regardless of what happens during the endgame, he will not survive. If I ever do another rival Hawke, and I don't think I ever will, it will be the murder knife. I really don't forsee me ever rivaling Anders again. Or siding with the templars.

Anders" is a common name in Scandinavia, equivalent to the English name Andrew, and derived from the Ancient Greek word andros, meaning "human" or "man". In modern Dutch and modern German anders means "different", but this is purely by chance since both words come a completely different origin - Dragon age wiki Triva section for Anders.

I think this is why I also love him and want him to live, he was born to change the world!

@ Giggles This might help. http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Anders

Rivalmance and siding with templars is painful. Meredith is so crazypants that I just feel kind of sick for doing it. Ugh. And Anders is such a wreck on that path. :( I played until just past the Orsino fight, because I hadn't sided with the templars before. Got to see Cullen stand up to Meredith when Hawke spared the three mages.  Finally got to call Orsino out for hiding that lunatic Quentin.

Reloaded and sided with the mages. I wish rivalmance Anders didn't give the exact same speech at the Gallows as friendmance Anders.

Still not sure which path I like better. Might see what how the rivalry path turns out if Hawke doesn't romance him.

@berelinder: Yeah, it is pretty much the most depressing thing I've ever seen in a video game, too. And it's really painful considering what Anders and Justiice were like in Awakening. I did the murder knife (for science!) and Seb's line right after that made me want to punch him.

Also, not intending to start yet another "Friendship is better!" "No, rivalry is better!" argument. =]

Ugh, I hate Best Served Cold. I just wish you could get those templar/mage huddles to talk to you. I mean, you'd think they might say "Oooh look, there's Hawke, the guy who kicked the Arishok's arse - let's see what he wants" rather than just throw themselves on his sword/daggers/stave. In that quest you're effectively taking out all the sympathetic templars and moderate mages (with the exception of Grace) which just makes no sense at all for a pro-mage Hawke. Grrr.

So the rivalmance is pretty depressing, huh?

Ugh BSC is horrible as a pro-mage Hawke. Not so bad as a pro-templar Hawke. At least as a pro-templar Hawke it makes sense. Otherwise it's "oh yeahlet's kidnap the dude who stood up for us little sis/little bro. That works!" :pinched:

And rivalrymanced Anders giving the same speech as friendship anders...It doesn't make much sense to me. Why isn't he more concerned about Vengeance?  What the fact that he just assumed direct control of him doesn't matter anymore? If anything he should still be pretty guilty because he's the reason most of those mages are now fighting and dying not to mention he and Vengeance should still be fighting one another for control. Unless Vengeance magically retreats which...Anders really should mention.

Edit 2 totally off topic: Anyone who plays ME2. During Subject Zero's recruitment at the boss battle there's endlessly spawning enemies. Where is the trigger point for them to stop the infinite spawns? I'm sick of dying there and having to resort to cheating. Unlike the Krogan's recruitment the respawns don't seem to be stopping anytime soon.

So...according to the original game lore templars could sense mages automatically?

WTF BioWare? That makes having Hawke/Bethany go to Kirkwall make even *less* sense.

Smart templar vs dumb templar indeed. Kirkwall probably makes you drop half you IQ points by walking in the gates.

Or perhaps they are trained to notice things like robes with arcane symbols on them and big honking staffs strapped to their backs. Cullen was out sick that day, apparently. Or perhaps spying on Ms. Amell or Surana.

Edit: Keep in mind that the Ser Bryant segment, at least, is modded, so there's no telling what the actual character build is.

Maybe Malcolm taught his kids to be stealth mages?

It still doesn't explain Merrill/Anders. I pretend like the templars know about Anders, but the Viscount and Meredith allow him to stay free because his clinic helps keep a balance with the refugees/lower class and because he's a Warden and they don't want to start a thing with the Wardens.

LOL

Modded? I doubt the character isn't a mage. Just with some modded  armor and a modded staff.

I'll dig in the toolset to see if he says that to a mage PC though. Yup he does.

Warden: Have you heard any other news?

Bryant: I suppose since you are a mage, I do know something that might interest you. [grudging admission]

Maybe all the special Templars end up there? I mean Cullen is there and was really banged up in the last game.  Also all the slow people are there.  I think it has to do with staves looking like spears and outside of Hawke none of the other mages are really wearing 'robes' well not the dress looking kind.

Maybe. I don't know you could wear any kind of armor in DAO and he still would say it to a mage PC. Then was the templar dude in Denerim for that haunted house quest he could sense magic as well. Kirkwall templars just suck. (Probably not their fault though. Hellmount makes everyone crazy). Maybe the thin veil interfers with their ability to sense mages? I dunno.

I was really confused by this to start with as well, but now I think it's down to the Chantry tolerating the Resolutionists (open apostates) so they can keep a better eye on their activities, rather than just shutting them down.
I now imagine there are sketches of Anders, Hawke (if mage), and Merrill up in the Templar barracks saying to let them carry on with whatever they're doing - just report back anything suspicious.

Maybe that why the Knight-Commander was so crazy, she was surrounded by idiots.  Also no wonder why **** went down the way it did.

*Anders planting a bomb*

"You Ser what are you doing?"

"Uhh I didn't do it."

"I see carry on"

Hawke is facing palming his/herself to death.

On another note, tried playing through origins for ****s and giggles...I almost died! I mean seriously combat seems so damn slow! I was like "OMG KILL EET!"

Not to mention trying to warn Cullen and all Hawke gets is a "I'll look into it."  My Hawke's pretty much "alright. Whatever happens you morons deserve it."

Ugggh. Origins combat is slooow. I don't see how anyone misses it. DA2's combat with the exploding bodies may seem silly but it's at least a decent pace. And not to mention the mages' pew pew staff attacks.  Going back to that after DA2 made me sad.

I love mages base attacks now, gives them flare.  Yeah I love DA 2 combat over origins and I don't see how people disagree.

Though people will always look from something to hate I guess.

yep, they are all just weak minded when it comes to Jedi Mage mind tricks.

Templar: "Let me see that walking staff."
Anders: [hand wave] "You don't need to see my staff."
Templar: "We don't need to see his staff."
Anders: "These aren't the Apostates you're looking for."
Templar: "These aren't the Apostates we're looking for."
Anders: "You want a copy of my manifesto"
Templar: "I want a copy of your manifesto"
Anders: "Move along."
Templar: "Move along... move along."

you loose 10% of your Iq while getting to shore
You loose another 10% by looking at the gate
you loose 20% walks through the doors
You loose the rest while talking to your companions
if your lucky Hawke dies of bordom and lack of IQ points

well, if the veil is so thin in Kerkwall, maybe it kind of… mucks up the mage sensing ability. Like static or something
