I don't understand why anyone would leave Kirkwall after Leandra's death...you have no family in Ferelden and you should have at least a few very good friends in Kirkwall. I know that Varric, Isabela and Aveline are like family to my Hawkes.

And I can't see Anders leaving Kirkwall willingly. I think he feels like it's where he's supposed to be.

I'm with Surely on this - you've fled for your life/ from the army - Lothering, the only place you've stayed for an extended period of time has been wiped off the map, you have no family and no connections there. Kirkwall you have a home, you have friends, you have business investments... why leave?

Because you can see it's going to hell in a handbasket and is beyond your power to fix.

You do know you've run from the darkspawn horde...? Kirkwall must seem relatively safe compared to that - considering that the high drama points happen over a 10 year period I don't think it's too unreasonable to assume in between there is plenty of quiet regular stuff that makes you forget the crazy. Just like if you live near somewhere that's been bombed... after a month or two it loses it's significance.
King Alistairs offer is the only bit that makes me think twice, but if you're in a friendmance with Anders he doesn't want to leave, and who hasn't stuck around somewhere they don't particularly like because of their partners work?

For Margaret, that's the reason I eventually settled on why she stayed.  It was part of her frustration with him during the Justice quest.

For Anna, she's the stubborn noble paragon type.  She has no problem staying.  Her martyr complex insists she can fix the city or die trying.

Oh god I hated that conversation with Fenris because I too had no proper way to answer him. I ended up BSing and saying Hawke  was just a "let go and move on." kind of guy. (which makes him staying in Kirkwall after Leandra's death even odder. =]). but yeah. I did eventually turn him into the "shoves grief in a corner and never looks at it again." type. (who I ended up adoring because of that.) so him staying there especially with the templar/mage conflict a brewing just makes no sense. He's attached to his frends but not so attached that he'd stay in a potential bomb site. The only family in KIrkwall is Gamlen who he can barely stand, his friends (of those that there are one and that's Fenris) would be willing to move with him. Anders...I'm not sure about him. My Hawke might've tried to get him to come with. If he was fully unwilling my Hawke would've shrugged and left.

Yep. So did my Hawke. Or, not my canon Hawke, but at least one I was very fond of.

Depends on the sort of Hawke you're playing, really. I didn't like Kirkwall much. If you didn't feel that strongly tied to your companions, why stay when the political situation there is so tense? For most of the Hawkes I was playing, friends were easy come easy go, and I really missed Ferelden.

I don't see Anders leaving willingly either. Too much stuff to be done.

It was nice playing him and getting more and more frustrated as time went on.

I guess he stayed in Kirkwall because of Merrill in that case. Wanted to make sure her mirror didn't blow up the alienage.

"What's that? You want me to take this demon-consorting blood mage to the Alienage full of squishy half-starved people with no means to defend themselves against an abomination? Sure, what's the worst thing that could hap - WHAT?"

PS: About that Tomb Raider trailer? It looks awesome. Awesomely creepy, but as someone who likes the RE and SH-series, I don't mind. Also, the only person in the world who liked Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. Or so it feels like.

...Yeah....

That was one of the scenes were I kind of went "...really?" as a pro-circle/templar Hawke leting Merrill run around freely...makes no sense At least with Anders you're kind of aware they *know* who he is they just don't bother catching him because he's a warden. Merrill has no such shield.

I eventually HC it as they (Merrill and Anders) saved his life in a battle and he's the honorable a life for a life type so he won't turn them in/kill them because of it. (The same reason [not including the romance] he lets Anders go after blowing up the Chantry. Anders saved Hawke's life and Hawke's sibling's life (I make the sibling a warden). So...a life for a life.

It's the only way I can make sense of it.

Edit: RE: Tomb Raider: I'm actually interested in this game now. It looks awesomely creepy. And it'll be nice seeing Laura go from scared panicking girl (rightfully!) to kickass adventureous woman.

I love Merrill to bits and think her research is very interesting, but I wish she would do it... far away from other people. In strictly controlled enviroments. I understand why it would be frustrating for pro-templar players to not be able to turn her in, regardless of what might happen to her, because it's difficult to make sense of it to me unless your Hawke is a very loyal and honorable type. I simply wish there were room for more roleplaying options, in general, I guess.

I guess my Hawkes have the same core thinking. Mage or not Malcolm and Bethany have always meant the Hawke family runs when trouble hits. Flight or Fight? My Hawkes fight so they can run away.

Shona, my mage, feels she failed the people most important to her. Carver, Bethany and Leandra all died because she wasn't fast enough, clever enough or powerful enough. Friends are great but she's spent her life packing up and leaving to avoid trouble and that includes leaving friends. The big, bad, templars know it's the worst case scenario but apparently it's alright because the the KC isn't going to throw her into the Tower yet. To top it off her LI ran from her bed like a scolded cat. There's no compelling reason to stay but the game says she stays.

For my rogue it's a little different Bethany's in the Tower, Anders is living with her and without a reason to flee it's conceivable she decided to stay and fight. That is of course meta reasoning because this isn't an unspoiled playthrough and I knew before hand that there's no 'The Champion left and I found her on a mabari farm north of the Wounded Coast.' voice over from Verric for the opening of Act 3.

Blah. Watching the E3 now waiting for more Mass Effect 3 to show up and all I can think of now is that G4 needs to do Boothe Guys for a change. I'm getting tired of looking at boobs.

 Agreed.

There's more ME3 today though? I thought they were mostly done with it.

Yeah...

It is very frustrating. It's sad because she could've easily escaped the templars (like Jowan did) and simply been blacked out/gonefrom the selection screen (and maybe during the templar ending she would've defended the mages). There's no reason for her to be forced on the squad. I agree about more room for roleplayig options. Kind of reminds me of ME2 where no matter what you did or said you had to work with Cerberus without trying to find other options. It's lame. I didn't mind being forced so much as the way the forcing occured.

I dunno. The info button does say mass effect 3 yet I haven't seen anything of it yet. Saw a Syrim demo and a couple Uncharted 3 demos that I've paid attention to so far.

Nope I'm watching it on G4. The streams kept acting crappy for me. Halo Combat Evolved Remake is about to come on next I think :3

I've seen 3 different demos but I won't get into it in the Dragon Age thread. Don't want to spoil anyone trying to avoid them here.

My canon Hawke liked it enough... she was definitely pretty crazy, though.  With the Arishok, she took the dialogue option that said something like "Why would you want to change [Kirkwall]?  It's life, glorious and wild, people living their lives for good or ill."

She flourished in chaos.
