Basically, I think Alistair is straight in canon, but that doesn't mean I won't read a fanfic where he sleeps with Anders. OF COURSE I WILL. Don't be crazy.

also wow i have yet to see that fic and that is just a tragedy.

While on the subject of fluffy, what is the deal with mages and feathers? There are so many mage-outfits with feathers I'm starting to think that this is a preference coded into their DNA or something - or maybe some clever commentary about being a free bird out of the cage.

So in your mind, bacteria have emotions? Since they will avoid areas where the temperature is likely to kill them, moving to areas where it will allow them to continue to live?

And are you saying that a robot who has a self-preservation command in it also has emotions? I'm not sure where you're drawing the line here.

Emotion is the self-preservation command. They are necessary to drive the instincts required for our survival.

And I am saying that a tranquil is a human for whom emotion has been removed and replaced with the same kind of instinctual self-preservation as bacteria and computer programs possess.

How much of a brain must one have to have emotions? If a bacteria isn't enough, is a planarian? How about an earthworm? An ant? a lamprey? How far do we have to go up the ladder of brain function before you consider the instinctual self-preservation impulse an emotion? You say no to the baterium right?

My point is that for the tranquil, the instinct toward self-preservation is no more advanced than it is in a bacterium. It is not a complex mix of free will, philosophical thought, and passion.

maybe go a little futher down the phylogenetic tree. to something with a brain, or at least a ganglion. bacteria have a physiological mechanism to do what they do - they must have one because the bacteria that don't die pretty quick.
plants have these mechanisms too - but no one claims they have emotion.

and i think DG has gone on record as saying the tranquil do like survival  ;)

Augh. My fanfic writing friend has a drabble about exactly this thing that she showed me a few days ago, but she never finishes or posts her DA fanfic and also she is a jerk. I'm going to bother her to post it somewhere when she comes online. Grumblemumble.

So that's why the Chantry locks the mages up. They're totally jealous.

Probably smart. I haven't slept at all tonight and I won't leave the house in fear that a child might see my face in its sleep-deprived state and receive life-long trauma because of it.

:D Oh, don't sell yourself short! That mental picture makes me laugh  I can totally see it happening. But I have to give it to the Fereldan templars, the gold and purple colored skirts they wear look just fabulous. Clearly, the mages must have given them some advice - which is incidentally why the Fereldan Circle is the most liberal one. True fact. :P

Funny, I just wrote about mages and feathers in a Warcraft/Dragon Age fic I wrote on a dare. (The prisoner that's being referenced in this excerpt is Anders.)

He wore feathered pauldrons. In her mind’s eye, she saw Medivh, his tall and powerful form dressed with similar adornments. Medivh’s own pauldrons had given him the appearance of a crow, a form into which he commonly shapeshifted.

As the feathers upon the prisoner’s coat shivered in an unseen breeze, Jaina faintly wondered if they desired the freedom that their former owner once had. Perhaps there was a connection there, one between mages and the birds of the sky. It seemed that both needed a disconnect between the mortal binds of gravity and the endless possibilities of a wide-open horizon, in metaphor or in truth.

EDIT: Maker, massive formatting fail.

why hello new personal head-canon.
Why am I imagining a uniform-design contest being held in the Fereldan Circle? I feel like I should draw this.
Oh man, Anders, Jowan and Finn stading around a sketch book
"No, no, no, It has to be festooned with ruffles, FESTOONED!"

Yeah, the formatting on this site is cursed. A sign of the Maker's hatred, I tell you.

Actually, those clouds and debris in the background is the CHANTRY BURNING. So, the red "glow" is the fading light from the fire and BOOM! One of my favorite pics. I love how subtle yet effective it is. I WISH I HAD MORE TALENT!
I need to practice more. Damn work preventing me from developing my hobbies.

Thanks! The piece is called Wings of Feather and Bone. (Rated Adult for naughty bits, naughty actions, naughty language, blood and gore, etc. etc.) I was actually shocked, as I was writing it, how well that the two worlds worked together when put side by side.

Right? When I read that I thought "Well, obviously someone has never been to a Chi-Chis"

As for the feathery pauldrons, it's where they hold all of their power, duh. That's why they're so fluffy -- it's like Gretchen Weiners' hair in Mean Girls, except instead of secrets they're full of ~magic :wizard:

Hahaha. I went here to post it and then you already did my job for me so I don't have to self promote.

Seriously though, it was meant to be:
-Templar killing
-repeated scuffles with religious authority
-black bird themed outfits
-a vengeance arc
-promiscuous, carefree youth tempered by a super important cause
-etc.
