Pillars of the Earth is amazing.  I had no idea Ken Follett had it in him!  I refuse to watch the miniseries because they are never as good as the book.  Books rule.  [/tiny nerd rant] :D

Erm, let's try on-topic cute for ToP:

Also, remember that Shakespeare's Juliet is thirteen. THIRTEEN. The idea of a period of adolescence encompassing the time during the development of biological maturity but before complete mental maturity is a relatively new one. It only really properly started as a cultural institution in the 1940s and 50s.

I'd be hardpressed to think of someone that proves the immaturity of youth MORE than Juliet.

And I'm, personally, not of the mindset of a pre-40's time period and, therefore, I am not comfortable with the idea of Karl being significantly older or hooking up with Anders when Anders was younger. Instead of hating on Karl, or trying to look for deep psychological reasons why Anders would want to be with an older man, I've decided to go with what's probably the reality: Anders is older than I originally thought and Karl isn't supposed to be as old as he looks.

Oh, I'm totally with you there. I just like to come up with explanations that I'm pleased with for every possible scenario, so I'll have a coping mechanism in place for any future canon revelations that may happen (however unlikely.)

That said, I'm totally for the idea of Anders fumbling around the tower with mages approximately his own age, Lister-style, for most of his adolescence.

On the creeper discussion, has anyone read A Song of Ice and Fire? Chock full of creeper-ness which squicks my modern Western sensibilities on a routine basis. Not saying that the writers were "inspired" by *that* aspect of ASOIAF, but...medieval culture was most likely not age sensitive as we are now.

Well, Gaider himself said he greatly appreciated A Song of Ice and Fire, and I certanly can see it in the world of DA.
I read the books too, and I was impressed with a medieval world that instead of focusing on magic for the most part was more centered on the political affairs. Magic is something rare, feared, almost a legend no one wants to believe anymore. It also described a cruel world, very real.
Speaking of which, magic in DA:O was less frequent to see as far as I remember, and when I was playing a Warden Mage I felt somehow different or special.
In DA2 you see mages in every corner, blood mages in every corner.
I can only suppose the thin Veil helps to fuel magic powers...so there are more mages around in Kirkwall.

Or the lyrium in the water according to that chatty fellow in the Hanged Man. There's a conspiracy in there somewhere, I tell you.

I'm reading the Sword of Truth series right now which also includes a lot of parallels to DA2, particularly the idea that mages with unchecked power tend to go nuts and destroy or enslave and that people get really nuts in opposing mages and start destroying everyone with magic because they're scared.  Magic used to be widespread.  It's become incredibly uncommon in that universe but I foresee some "back from the brink" action as Sandal's prophecy hints.

Plus they have a Seeker.  :kissing:

Yeah, medieval values on marriage and stuff have men in their 30's+ marrying girls who've just had their first period (which some girls have as young as 8). Girls were often forced to marry as soon as they could have children, not to mention the extra pressure on the family to provide a dowry. Also, average life expectancy was usually into the 30's or 40's, and women often died in childbirth. "Marrying for love" wasn't really an option, which is probably why romantic troubadours gained such popularity. Isn't perspective grand?

That said, Dragon Age tends to follow a more modern approach to marriage rather than a medieval one, probably to make it more approachable for the players. The closest we come to a canon "creeper" marriage is Isabella's backstory.

Also, I can just picture an escaped Anders playing troubadour to a young lady who'd been forced to marry an ugly old man. Maybe it wouldn't matter how bad he was at playing the lute, then? :o

Sorry to butt in nerdily, but it's not really true that most people married early and unwillingly.  Nobles might have to make such a marriage- there was a risk in leaving a girl unmarried too long, and she was a powerful bargaining chip- but the average folk tended to marry when the man had completed an apprenticeship (mid or late 20s) and the woman was late teens or early 20s.  It was well known that women had a better chance of surviving childbirth if they were not just out of puberty.  Because they'd have to pay merchet or dowry, it was also better to keep a girl at home for a while so she could add to the household economy.  Even if it was expected that most people marry, that doesn't mean they married a stranger or unwillingly.  There was effort to make sure marriages were consensual- it was a church law- and the church also provided a place where women had a career path outside marriage and childbirth if they wanted that.  Women could also ply a trade, though they most often did so with their husbands or as widows taking over a husband's trade.

Courtly romantic stories weren't popular because people were miserable, but just because it was a literary fashion.  At least, no more miserable than those of us who like romantic stories these days.  :)

Now now, I didn't say most marriages happened that way, merely that marriage values didn't make it "creepy" or out of place as it is today.  I mentioned something of an extreme example, and more dramatic language than I intended, I admit.  Different regions and cultures doubtless had different practicies, as well.  Medieval Europe was certainly not a homogenous community.  In general, though, is that people grew up somewhat faster then than they do now.  There was no real concept of "teenager," until sometime in the 1900's though there were undoubtedly people who fit that description.  My acutal intent was to point out that such age differences back in the day, especially of a younger woman to an older man, weren't obscene or grossly out of place, just as you pointed out with tradesmen of late 20's marrying 20yr old women of similar class.  It still wouldn't have been out of place to marry younger than that for other classes, though.  Also, "marrying for love" was still mainly a romantic idea (not that it couldn't happen), but that didn't prevent marrying someone who you got along with and could learn to love eventually, which is a practical approach that some people even today go with (though not as common as divorce within the 1st year).

Freedom of women to do whatever they wanted is another, highly interesting subject all on its own, too.  It always interested me that widows had more rights and privilages than when their husbands were alive.  Well, unless they were burned along with the body of their late husband, that is, but I think that only happened with the Norse.

actually the tv series was pretty good, and it was approved by ken follett (who was even had a small part). and like Addai said; rufus sewall! *swoons*. But i think waleran bigod should have been played by guy henry... that character was awesome in the book and mediocre in the series.

and i can totally make this relevant! i called my cousland aliena, and she has a bit of a clash with anders when it came to discussing mages. see?  :bandit:

Well, he does say Pounce is "phat" instead of "fat," so maybe they are tears of joy. He thinks it's awesome.

Psst! Amondra! Snip the pic before the moderators find it. They don't like four-letter words in artwork, and we don't want this thread locked.

Anders on rainbow-bedecked whale rocks, though.

Judging by some of the things I've gotten away with here, I'm pretty sure the moderators haven't come anywhere near this thread since like page 300.

This is why I posted my question on the board. Things get so interesting. XD Y'all have given me lots to think about regarding ages, and I think I'd like to imagine Anders as being my age at the beginning of DA2. :D There are certain headcanon elements to Hawke that I like to imagine as coming to play in their relationship based on Anders being distinctly older (5+ yrs). Also the fact that no matter who Hawke is, Anders is always like, "oohhhh I'm no good for you.... but I totally dig you."

My Hawkes will probably all be different ages, but I'm gonna think of Anders as being 27.

I might have more to say on that but I have to go buy soy milk.

Thank Jeebus for saves.

I disliked all the act 1 flirt options with Anders TBQH.
Good thing there is act 2.
