I always go Diplo!Hawke in Act 1, to totally let Anders hit on me. So when he's all "Am I making you uncomfortable?" she can be all coy about it with her 'yes, but it's a good kinda discomfort,' and, strangely Anders doesn't seem to launch into his 'No I shouldn't do this' speech that way. He went instead to some line about not being a safe man to get involved with. I took this as a sign that my Hawkes are slowly wearing down his resistance over the course of many games.

Or over a period of time. I swear, sometimes it seems like the only way the sheer speed with which Anders will go from "You're Beautiful" to "CRAWWWLING IIIINNN MY SKIIIIIN" would be if this is not a real CONVERSATION I'm taking part in, but an amalgamation of a number of conversations over a period of weeks, maybe months.

Inappropriate!Hawke is so lulzy. The only way for the next protagonist to top him/her off would be if, instead of flirt lines, they simply drop their pants when prompted with this facial expression;

...aaaaaaand we've found a creeper worse than anders!

Worst creeper moment yet.

Like most of us, I tend to avoid the "At least he got a nice body" flirt in the post-Tranquility conversation. Well, this time, I'm making a video diary of Anders and Iain (for a fanfic I've begun), and I forgot to start up Fraps before walking into the clinic. So I figured what the heck. I chose the Inappropriate!Hawke flirt and followed it up with "Together?" Anders did his beautiful pansexual speech that he never gives unless you do that first flirt, and I followed it up with "I've never thought about it." To which Anders replies "I'll give you some time to think about it, then, in as much detail as you wish." And he says it in the sleaziest voice imaginable, and with the goofiest smirk. That line alone was worth the price of the game, it was so dreadful!

If anybody wants, I can go back and record it tonight... though I'm probably the only one here who had never seen that line before.

Aww, I rather like Hawke's inappropriate flirts. They are clearly attempts by a Hawke not comfortable with serious moments to lighten the mood. At least that was my view. I also tend to play snarky!Hawke as someone who uses inappropriate humor to keep people at arms length because he's spent most of his life on the run.

This one is going to be my canon Hawke, so he's mostly diplomatic. With him, snark is something he rarely indulges, except with people who are very close to him, like Carver and Varric. He can relax around those two. I do think I'm going to keep this in my current playthrough, though. Like everybody else's Hawkes, Iain has spent his life running, but mostly, that means that he has historically not let people of either gender get close to him.

I think the deflection interpretation is a good one. It's also possible to play a Snark!Hawke who is all about not letting our boys dwell on their problems."Yes, it's very sad, and yes I'm there for you, but I'm there for you in a fun way, not there to let you drown yourself in self-loathing" I call it the "Lina Inverse."

I wish it were a bit easier to walk the line between treating their concerns seriously and disrupting their cycles of self-destruction.

Sometimes I wonder if the romance would have felt substantially different if they'd had Greg Ellis instead, or simply a slightly drier and more sarcastic delivery. I can see that "No, don't go there, that's not going to end well." line said almost lazily, sarcastically, with a slightly condescending smirk. More in the tone of "don't threaten me, little girl." And that makes me shiver... I'd like to see a romance like that, where the warnings are more in the vein of "I'm at least together enough to know that this is a massively bad idea, so if you insist on being suicidally dumb I'm going to be the smart one."Rather than angstselfpityangst. I mean that would be the undercurrent, but the overcurrent would be the sarcasm.

That is the best line. Ever.

In my head I imagine it coming out of Hawke's mouth and she know how horrible it is, but it's like a runaway ox-cart and she can't even believe she has friends left after she says it.

And I have managed  to side-step the whole Anders crazypants flirt stuff in my headcanon by avoiding any Act 1 flirting in the game, and writing what amounts to be a two month long merged version of the F!Hawke and M!Hawke conversations garnished with shameless flirting and casual nudity. He'll get to the "I'll hurt you" line eventually, but there will be a reason for why he says it and a reason why Hawke listens to him. None of this "You get two seconds to be happy that this guy is interested in you, now go away for some undisclosed reason and wait three years for him to come around."
