Regarding the Vichy French example: the problem is that there is no direct analogue for the situation, so everything is going to have some significant differences. Nevertheless, I still feel that in this particular situation, the leverage that anyone progressive would have within the system without a significant disruption causing a massive opinion shift is minimal. Orsino lacked the power to even prevent things from getting worse, let alone make any progress. Even a mage who is a major adviser to the King of Ferelden has little ability to change the situation in that nation's actual circle.

It has an entirely different international systemic context.
Had Germany been in decline and the heads of Vichy used the system to get independence, it would have been less bloody than an all out revolt. Especially if German generals actualy obeyed Hitler when he ordered Paris razed.

But this is a completely different situation. Vichy is a puppet government put in place by invaders. This is not the Chantry.

Furthermore, I am not saying mages should work within the Chantry system. I am saying mages should find a way to integrate themselves in the state system and to make states patronize them.

If the mages in the circle did not have some plan to gather allies, I do not believe they would have chosen to rise up. They could have just as easily distanced themselves from the Kirkwall event and chosen not to rise up. I'll be interested in seeing what exactly did happen, when it is revealed. I imagine that some Knight Commanders went crazy and did initiate violence, but that many of the more powerful and liberal circles decided to participate after rational debate on the subject.

You keep assuming that they did choose to rise up.

And making allies is something they should have done before revolting and not after. But we've reached an impass as you think it's impossible while I think it's perfectly possible and that mages can and do communicate with the outside world and I see no reason why they can't initiate it. Orsino was able to make a speech in front of nobles without getting himself killed. He woul have been more succesful if he was subtle and knew what he was doing.

I believe that this was a fairly good time for a revolution: Ferelden is likely to have an openly mage-sympathetic ruler in many cases (even without a mage warden, there is Wynne), Orzammar may have a circle. Orlais is actively engaged in aggression against the state with the most powerful circle outside of Tevinter. The Qun are breathing down everyone's neck.

Ferelden is still weak. Orzammar may be run by an idiot. Nevarra is checked by their fragile situation in the blasted hills. And it is precisely because the Qunari are coming that this is not a good time for this. If I was Qunari, I would be delighted with the current course of events.

I don't think Anders was a genius, neither do I think he was a fool. I think he was, for a brief shining moment, the anthropomorphic personification of the cause of mages. He saw a lever, a symbolic act that would present mages with a unique message and opportunity, and he pulled that lever.

If he represents the cause of mages, then they stand no chance at winning. they will need to adopt a much more pragmatic, reasonable and less hateful position to be able to win and build something after.

Since I am already in the process of courting CulturalGeekGirl, but have yet to address the subject of our mutual opinions regarding multiple partnerships with her, how would you advise me to proceed? 

I find beckaliz incredibly sweet and endearing, and quite intriguing...    However, I fear that CulturalGeekGirl might think my initial attraction to her to be fickle, or transient, when I can see ourselves moving past the stage of simple infatuation towards developping a much more meaningful partnership.

However, should she be open to the concept of multiple commitments, I would like to explore what beckaliz and I could truly offer each other.
