@ipgd : Is that a common thought, then, that Malcolm was a maleficar, or is it just one of those things that seems likely in certain circumstances like Hawke learning blood magic?

@leggywillow : Ah. Just another inconsistency that we have to swallow, then.

@Evilnor : If Anders did make his comment without giving it seroius thought, he may have been trying to give cute sweet little Merrill the benefit of the doubt. But I actually can get behind the idea that it might be an accident. It could just be the art department, but whenever someone uses blood magic in the game, it's always a pretty dramatic slash and spurts of blood, so it would take more than just a skinned knee to bring forth any hint of the power that could be in it. I also think that you'd have to focus on it a little. Like, "Oooh, look, I have a cut... lots of blood.... ooh, it's warm and alive, and OOO! Powah!"

EDIT: Damnit top again! Maybe this is a sign. :pinched: I need to go to bed and shut up.

Instead of a picture, here's a link to our favorite "Anders is a blood mage" YouTube video...

Actually, I'm pretty much neutral good. As much as I hate it, and long to be a nice random chaotic neutral, I always end up as neutral good.

Also, I am safe on another coast. Wheee. Also, it is sad that I can use these forums to determine my total door-to-door travel time. Twelve hours, yeesh! Now I have to decide whether to go scavenge for food or just eat trail mix and let the Anders thread lull me gently to sleep. Interview tomorrow at 11am PDT, eeeeeee.

I always end up overpacking for trips. At least Anders with his hobo bindle has mastered the art of traveling light.

This is a truly wonderful picture! I would really like to see it coloured, but even as it is it strikes as one of the finest pieces of fan art I've ever stumbled across. Wonderful find!

Yes. We tweeted the picture of JazzHanders to him when I first made the picture. Then we went insane and started inserting Anders into various musicals. Ah, those were good times.

I agree! She's fantastic and I love that she's doing DA art in her spare time. Most of it (including another adorable picture of her M!Hawke and Anders) is here.

Until Word of God or the game tells me otherwise I've kinda assumed Malcolm was very thorough with his mage children's education. They were taught the theory of every branch of magic and their natural inclination does the rest.

Whether he's a blood mage himself is secondary to his scholarly need to impart knowledge on his kids.

Harder to handwave is the warrior and rogue specs that just sit there waiting to be chosen.

Reaver is the only one that Hawke couldn't conceivably learn once in Kirkwall. Being a smuggler/mercenary would put you in close contact with people who could teach Rogue!Hawke spec skills, and Hawke could learn some of the basics of templaring from someone like Samson. Even Berserker could probably be picked up in a book since it's more of a philosophy than anything else.

Reaver, though, is pretty much blood magic and we're told it needs a ritual.

:(

I have a soft spot for Anders/Karl. Maybe it's my longstanding soft spot for doomed relationships. (Hello, unhealthy love of Jaina/Arthas.)

Edited because my post took up half a page with quotes. Whoa.

I absolutely love talking about Correm. <3 I bet other people are sick of hearing about him. XD

As I said, it was my virgin PT so I knew nothing about the game beyond that the character was named Hawke, refugee from Lothering, and was voiced. Everything about the game was a surprise. Many pleasant surprises. Then the unpleasant surprises, like Mother's death. :crying: And of course the Chantry bombing. My shock was great, and Correm's was also. No metagaming at all.

Anyway, to make a long story short, and save me some writing for my fanfic which deserves more attention than I give it, Correm felt like Anders had left him no choice. Anders expected to pay for his crime. Correm knew that only he could do it. There was no way that he'd let anyone else do it. Then he sided with the Templars. :pinched:

If you'd like a more detailed explanation of what he was thinking, I can send you a message. :3 I'm in theory going to write it down but I don't know when that'll end up really being.

Yes...  Yes I would...  Lol!  I'm always interested in other people's Hawkes, and the reasons why they chose this or that course of action.  So send away!  :D

Could be that Merrill is familiar with the ritual required and is able to replicate it. That's how I headcanon my Reavers - they fetch the dragon blood and she takes care of the rest.

Funny this has come up as I was researching this the other day. The skill trees have got a few bits of information which give you hints on how rogue's (didn't look at warrior trees - sorry!) would pick up the specs. Like - the Shadow "As a smuggling hub, Kirkwall has more than a few practiconers of these techniques who will pass down their secrets to those they deem sufficiently skilled. And the Assassin - "There are a suprisingly large number of assassins at work in Kirkwall, though most are away on contract at any given time."
It was always the mage ones I found harder to understand due to the lack of a tutor outside of the circle. I always saw speciliasations being something the NPC's would develop overtime with training.

Anyway... back to Anders, and EmmaV's beautiful art, gratuitous commission post!

Yesterday we were discussing Anders and superheroes...  And now, all these talks about Kirkwall being a "Hellmouth" made me think that...  Is it just me or the inside of this actual Hellmouth looks suspiciously like the Deep Roads (especially when they are looking at it from above about 3 seconds into the video)?

www.youtube.com/watch
(Stop at about 20 seconds in if you don't want any real big BTVS spoilers)

And the Ubervamps like a mix between Genlocks and Hurlocks?

Here, have a closer Ubervamp look:
www.youtube.com/watch

I know that David Gaider and many of the other people who worked on "Dragon Age" are huge BTVS fans (with Alistair being loosely based on Xander, Spike on Zevran...  And I think that, in the game guide, Jennifer Hepler said that they were going for a "Buffy & Angel" cursed romance style with Anders...  Got that one right!)...

But I'd never realised before how some visual elements from the show reminded me of the game as well.

And the very First Slayer was created by mixing a human girl with the essence of a demon...  So she had to become partly demon herself in order to have the strenght and skills to be able to fight the demons...  Kind of like the taint of the darkspawns allows Grey Wardens to fight darkspawns once they've mastered it.

That Anders/Karl drawing really yanks on the heartstrings. Every time Anders says, "Karl, No!" in the game, I just want to cuddle him up.

@River: Very well! I shall compose my thesis on Correm's Motivations! Ha ha ha.

And, waitwait, Alistair is loosely based on XANDER? No wonder I love him so much!! <3 <3 Not to mention he's voiced by Steve Valentine. Always loved him on Crossing Jordan.

@Elle: I love his old man forehead! I've always found guys in their mid-30s to be particularly attractive. I made sure to put his forehead creases when I drew him. They are so endearing.

@SurelyForth: So the Reaver specialty requires a ritual even if you can learn it from a manual in DA:O?

According to the lore, you learn it by tasting the ritually prepared blood of a dragon. And you don't learn it through a manual in Origins, you learn it by helping the cultists. If there is a manual in Awakenings, it's probably just game mechanics. But Merrill is likely to know of the ritual and there's plenty of dragons about, so there's no need to handwave a Reaver Hawke.

I desliked how they handled specializations in DA II. And yes, lore-wise Reavers use blood magic, of a kind. The same way Templars have special abilities of their own.

Berserkers just hit really, really hard.

You can buy a manual at one of the inns, I thought.

But that would put an interesting twist on Correm's relationship with Merrill... At the end battle she says something like, "Nothing turned out the way I thought it would. Especially not... with you." (Full rivalry and she's still adorable with him.) And he didn't give her the aurulen'holm or anything. I can't remember if he flirted with her in Act 1... Not sure. If he did, he didn't mean it as a flirt. He's like that. Flirting accidentally. Not accidentally on my part, but he says things that are flirty without really thinking about it. ;3

On my first PT Correm learned Templar and Berserker specialty, but I didn't put any points into Templar, I think. Replaying him I gave him more Templar skills and a couple of the Reaver ones. I suppose that makes him a bit of a hypocrite.

Not in DAO. Awakening, yes, but that is obviously a matter of gameplay/story segregation. Just like Hawke learning Reaver and Blood Mage with no explanation.

This.

But I cheated, with my Warden and my Hawke. Warden read about it and maybe the Taint helped? And Hawke just consumed A LOT of dragon blood. With Hawke, I didn't want to make her the sort of person who'd want to be a Reaver, so I'm choosing to pretend that the ritual is basically adding vodka and some spices to make it more palatable.
