Definitely.

*see Yuki and ipgd's above exchange*

I was basing that off an actual kinkmeme prompt that requested F!Hawke getting pregnant by BOTH Fenris and Anders where she was going through lyrium addiction and had mage babies. You think I wouldn't have found it just as awful if It was a male Hawke? Actually, it would have been worse since mpreg.

And yes, clearly I hate female characters.

No, I didn't say you hated female characters, since I know that you don't. I'm saying that it was a prime example of a kneejerk reaction to female protagonists in fanfiction. Which is...go directly to the worst case scenarios.

Even if it's mocking a specific type of writer/fan, the fact that it's automatically attached to F!Hawke is...yes.

Mmm, but if I did research then we would know the answer based on Science! You... must have some idea of how I feel about Science! by now. Hint: I'm for it.

Especially mad social science. And I think this would count as mad social science.

And I've repeatedly pointed out that it all washes out almost immediately and I certainly didn't say that there was no emotional connection with M!Hawke or no physical attraction with F!Hawke. I'm saying that, from my experiences with having been attracted to different people in different ways, I approach them differently. Not better or worse...just different. He clearly cares about both, and he loves both just as much when it comes down to it. Which I've also said.

I know, I was just pointing out the unfortunate implications that could be drawn from that interpretation. Or at least the implications I drew. Of course, it's after midnight in my timezone, so that could be affecting my thinking. I'm going to bed before I insert my foot into my mouth any more than I already have.

You're just waiting for someone to tell you to go for it, aren't you? :P

Actually I am curious about your research in regards to sexual behavior. For purely scientific reasons.

Honsestly, I'd just put whatever differences exist down to SOCIETY, MAN.

I was going to elaborate but really, that's enough.

wait wat

If it helps, the only kind of fanfiction I ever read is the mind-bendingly horrid kind and I've read not only prompts but fills for Fenris being ****ed by a pack of mabari, Hawke getting Anders pregnant, Hawke getting Carver pregnant, Gamlen getting Hawke (both kinds) pregnant --

You know what, basically just arrive at "mpreg" for all scenarios. I'm not really seeing that being a much better case than Twilight belly chewing or multiple-man pregnancies.

edit: ALSO THIS HELLO.

Part of the reason I got out of the Psychology biz was that stuff like this isn't what you end up getting allowed to research most of the time. You end up doing dead dull stuff about some crap you don't care about for decades before you get to start making your own mazes and running your own orphans rats through them.

I could do a proof-of-concept experiment I suppose. Hmm. It's something to consider. It'd be interesting to see how much small-scale scientific research could be done on the cheap by someone who isn't qualified beyond a B.S.

Basically there's a field of media research that I wish had been a serious thing when I was in a position to go into it full time. As is, I slightly prefer my current career to anything but the most fanciful and nerdy psych experiments, so I'm going to keep on hustling that until it burns me out.

oh da kmeme

F!Hawke gets pregnant by Anders or Fenris (or both if your adventurous, 'cause fraternal twins do run in her family so it is possible.)

i feel like i understand biology in a way i did not before

and @Surely, as someone who frequents that meme, while there are always gender studies to be done about terrible fandom inequality, please rest assured that one of the reasons f!hawke was brought up (aside from, you know, it being a reference to a specific prompt) is bc f!hawke constitutes like 70% of prompts.

and since 95% of fanfic is terrible --

that's some kinda crazy probability of bad f!hawke fic i can't even FIGURE

That's not so different than m!Hawke, then. He'll respond in the first conversation, but ignore him in the second. Which I take as being in support of my original claim. As in, at this point Hawke should know better than to push for anything.

I don't see it.

(Spoilers for those who haven't done both male/female romances)

Friendship path:
Male/female breakdown:

First convo after tranquility both Hawke's can flirt, Anders seems surprised and pleased (he smiles).
Second convo is after going back to darktown for any quest it pops up talk to Anders.
Anders will flirt with you (Diplo option) or you can flirt with him.

Female gets: I'll hurt you, I'll break your heart.
Male gets: Conversation.

Act 2 first talk
Female gets: conversation and I'll hurt you. (I select stay in control option because the other sounds awful and my girls are not into flowers/jewelry/whatever).
Depending on next two choices it all boils down the same -You don't want this, you don't want this, don't tempt me.

Male gets: conversation and an invitation to come with him/stand beside him/this is your fight too (If mage). Either flirt option is about the same.

Act2 after dissent
Female: (Kiss) This will be a disaster but I can't live without it.

Male: (Kiss) We could die tomorrow but I wanted to do that in case it happens. (Or close enough, been awhile)

(I play with both diplomatic and sarcastic Hawke's but am mostly diplomatic with Anders. (All of them except one are pro-mage as well)

I can see how people can view Anders as preferring males and those who think Anders cares more/is more protective of a female Hawke.

And just because...
Need Ser Pounce AlotPosted Image pics...I don't know anyone with a tabby cat or I would take some.

Hey, It could happen.

Edit: holy crap it's actually happened often enough to have an official NAME: "heteropaternal superfecundation." Now I've DEFINITELY learned something. Apparently it's common in animals! Extremely rare in humans, though.

Edit the second: Ok I have to add this actual data. DATA.

A newly discovered case of heteropaternal superfecundation (HS) is reported. Three HS cases were found in a parentage test database of 39,000 records. The frequency of HS among dizygotic twins whose parents were involved in paternity suits is 2.4%. Although the study population appears similar to the general population with respect to twinning data, inferences about the frequency of HS in other populations should be drawn with caution.

well not that i would anyway but i guess i'll never be doing a female romance with anders, because you're right about the act 2 dialogues being so different, and i just don't like that dynamic as much. all of m!hawke's are all COME HELP ME FIGHT and that's how i see the relationship so

that said, i have seen all the act 1 female options and played ten billion male ones, and you're oversimplifying.

highcastle's interpretation is predicated on the understanding that by mentioning karl's fate, anders has already given m!hawke fair warning through brutal action about the possible fate of anders' lovers. remember, hawke watched him kill karl. so it's not just a "conversation" he's having with hawke.

even still, in act 2, the overtones of protectiveness are more subtle, but if m!hawke isn't a rogue he still warns him consistently about his own incredibly focused nature. it's not like there's no forewarning of danger or how ****ty anders' life is.

Interesting from a scientific standpoint. Can't say the same for it in fiction when used as a plot device to create melodrama and get romantic interests fighting over your character.

All this talk of mpreg makes me think fondly of my best friend Kris. Um. He's one of my buddies with identity issues. I have an odd life. And odd friends.

I need to be writing right now. Uuugh. Somebody whack me over the head and make me write. Anders needs some love. (Though when does he never need love.)

EDIT: Reviewing romance video for my writing...  and WHAT THE CRAP look at this m!Hawke!! D: Hahaha the eye makeup!

Actually, I quite fancied him when I saw him. Then I figured out he reminded me of a young Eddie Izzard.

Yow.
