On the subject of zombies, has everybody seen this codex entry?

Zombie Grey Wardens, guys. Make it happen, Bioware!

Oh, wait.

Maybe Justice doesn't count.

In Awakening, he reminded me of a paladin.

I can appreciate that GRRM is an excellent writer, but stopped halfway through the second book. Too dark for me.

For me, some of it is the glee of finding a universe where the characters I like best are not the ones laid on the chopping block first. That's probably evil of me, but I don't care. In most other fantasy epics, when I find someone I like they are either "the cheerful guy who dies to increase pathos" or "the guy who is too smart and will thus curse himself" or something similarly stupid. "The rogue who redeems himself through death" is a favorite. So while there's more death and tragedy than in most books, it's not all focused exclusively on the characters I sympathize with, so I consider it a net win.

Dragon Age is somewhat guilty of this too: Anders was my favorite, and look what they did to HIM. I mean yeah, since it's a game you can do something to help him, but still... crazy or dead is pretty much canon for him.

Also, Game of thrones pulls off the BEST character death fake-out I have ever seen, the only time that it actually fakes out a character death. Lord and ladies, I was laughing to myself when they revealed that one... because the trick was they didn't ever really lie to me, in fact they gave me all the clues I would have needed to see through the ruse beforehand. Ach. Also, it pulled off the absolute best villain to hero transition that I have ever encountered in my life. I've never gone from hating someone that much to actively rooting for them.

 Anders the Punisher! Huttah!

Ok in the interest of Anders-ness, I'll spend some time this evening and tomorrow shopping Anders's head onto various things. So if anybody has anything they want done send me a PM with a link to a picture and I will doooooo it. :wizard: Even if it's very NSFW. :P I don't care. I'll do it I just won't post it openly. :o

@CGG:: Is this character of which you speak particularly short?

Um anyway. Back to cleaning out the workroom in my mom's barn. (It's been beyond a disaster for years. I'm taking hte opportunity to throw stuff away that she won't miss but would want to keep if she saw it.) *dash*

Man, this makes me remember a nice argument we had on the Garrus thread a long time ago, when some troll showed up and was like "blah blah, Garrus is a Murderer and if you don't accept that blah blah you should always let him kill his targets, because he's already a Murderer blah blah."

And I went on a big rant about the "spectrum of vigilantism" that goes
Batman ---> Huntress ---> Punisher

Really, a lot of the characters we like are closer to Huntress than the Punisher: She'd prefer not to kill people, but if people need to be killed, then sometimes they need to be killed. The Punisher is "shoot first and rarely ever ask questions later," while the Huntress is "ask a bunch of questions, get fed up with the answers, and kill a few bad guys." Of course, nobody remembers the Huntress because she's a girl... well also probably because she mostly existed in a universe that no longer ever existed. Still, considering her role in the DCAU, she should be more well known now. Grrrr.

We need some more prominent superheroes who are the "Kill people when needed, but don't just start killing everyone you disagree with" side. That's what Anders is, really.

At CGC:
Might I humbly suggest this guy:

I would say that Anders and the Punisher do share some traits.
Anyone who has read a Punisher comic can see just how hotly Frank Castle's anger drives him.

Both characters make you have to ask:
Is this guy out for justice, or revenge?

But really you cant judge a hero around their actions but by their motivations and mentality.

The Punisher is a psychopath who snapped and has gone on a rampage marathon.
Batman is mentally scared so badly that the real Bruce Wayne froze when his parents died.

Anders is a person who desperately wants to do something good, but due to Justice/Vengeance his mentality shifts.
Anders himself may be out for justice, but JUSTICE may be out for blood.

I cant think of any good comparisons but there are certain similarities.
I suggest reading: Batman/Punisher: DEADLY KNIGHTS to see both guys in the same world.
Good read.

But like most heroes Anders is broken badly in some sense, as is Justice by act 3.

/end nerdy comic book-super hero rant.

Mmm, but the Huntress is also out for revenge. The difference between her and ol' Frank is that Frank doesn't stop to feel bad about things very often. She does. She stops herself, or lets herself be reasoned with, but when someone just needs killing, she does it.

A few days ago, I was thinking about this whole superhero thing, and the one who reminds me most of Anders? Well... isn't it obvious?

Posted Image

Held prisoner by forces who wanted to break him, spending his whole life dreaming of freeing himself from the prison he was cursed to by birth, only to finally find that freedom with a beautiful brunette? Scott Free, Mr. Miracle, the superhero whose primary power is the power to escape. Who dedicated his life to bringing down the edifice of pain and horror that sought to break him.

There's our Anders.

Gawd im so out of touch with comics I can't possibly decide. I mostly hung around batman, catwoman, xmen, and some avengers. I don't think I can really see any of them like Anders except for some similarities for argument sake.

I don't see him as punisher though.

If you have time, watch all the DCAU shows.

It starts with Batman: the Animated series, goes on to a Superman series (which is interesting but skippable)

Then comes the Justice League, and Justice League unlimited. At that point you'll have as complete a grounding in DC comics as you could ever wish, though some of the canon is different between the universes, it's usually enough to get a foothold. You'd learn about Mister Miracle and half the people I've referenced here if you watched 'em, and they're damn good. Hold up astonishingly well.

There isn't a perfect analogue for Anders in superheroes, but I'm sticking with Mister Miracle for now. Anders has aspects of the Question and the Huntress and yeah, a bit of our old buddy Rorscharc (But CGG, isn't Rorscharc based on the Question? Shut up, parenthetical questioner!).  But Scott Free is all about the desire to show all those who are crushed under the heel of a totalitarian tyrant that escape is possible... that victory can be won... that struggle is worthwhile... well that reminds me of Anders.

It's a wonder I didn't think of this sooner. (Also seriously all you guys need to watch the Justice League. It is the best animated show of the last decade.)

That is small time compared to what else he does.

I'm tempted to equate Janders with Phoenix Force/Jean Grey but then I have to think about which version and my head starts to hurt.

Garrus=Huntress? I like it, makes more sense to me than Space Batman.

Ah, we're back to comics again? I like this discussion. I used to be a hardcore Marvel lover until they messed everything up with House of M, and I haven't read them since. (And I was already mad about the destruction of Genosha in the first place. I know. Nobody cares.)

You know, I know that with the evidence that we have, Anders really couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag, but I've always drawn parallels between him and Cyclops in the fact that neither dude can catch a break, and both keep having really, really bad stuff happen to them against their wills. Also, both have powers that they can't entirely control, and it shapes their character as a whole.

Anyway. That's what I have for you after only one cup of coffee with my left contact lens still blurry.

I saw that one earlier, and it made me wonder about if Anders feels himself being taken over by Justice or if it is something that just happens.

Can Anders feel himself turning. Does Justice actively suppress Anders at will and lets Anders out when it is his choice? Such a good piece of artwork! It makes me think at least. Especially my mind goes to that conversation he has with Merrill about being an abomination and what it feels like to be stuck in your own body while something else is controlling it. *cue twilight zone music*

You mean aside from the crouching down and holding his head in struggle/agony? Not being sarcastic, actually, just want clarification on what you're wondering.

Not related but hilarious...

Based on this banter between Anders and Merrill, I'd say he's very much aware during any Justice assertion of power.

  • Anders: It's not a good feeling, you know.
  • Merrill: What?
  • Anders: Being an abomination. I just got a taste of your future.
  • Merrill: I'm not that foolish. Our relationship is, um, strictly platonic.
  • Anders: It's like you're trapped in your own body, seeing out your eyes, while someone else moves you like a puppet.
  • Anders: And you're trying to scream, to move a single muscle, but there's no escape. Until you look down at the blood on your hands...
  • Merrill: Stop it. You're scaring me.
  • Anders: That's the point.

Sorry, becka, I totally quoted the wrong post (yours) when I first replied to this.

Haha I hit "quote" back to go "er..." in confusion and saw Arquen's words instead. So I was like, ooohhh! lulz.

Do you know if that banter triggers after Dissent or is it just anywhere you have the two of them together in Act 2? Is it act 2?
