It's hard. I intended to have a Hawke for everyone, but Anders is far and away my favorite. Fenris is okay. There's nothing wrong with Fenris; he's adorable, his voice is sexy, his story is interesting, and the romance plays out fairly well. But it just lacks something for me. It's so hard to resist Anders, too.
The most fun part of Fenris's romance is the part up to the break-up anyway, IMO, so my canon hooks up with him after getting the "NAY I WILL HURT YE" speech from Anders. She assumed she'd have no chance with Anders, and she wanted some lovin' from somewhere. But she and Anders have a chemistry that will not be denied!
I did this too, but I let Fenris break up with Hawke (waited for him to tell Anders it was over), then I went and romanced Anders. To this Anders said "Are you sure you want me here? I thought you and Fenris..." And Hawke answered: Never happened. Mwahahaha. Now I've got my steady (crazy) boyfriend and an oddly obsessed elf with a... lock of hair tied to his arm?
Ooooh, Pseudo, since you like Anders does this mean we may see awesome Anders fanart from you in the future? Because your stuff is unbelievably awesome; I love the strip poker pic.
Yep! I'm busy for the next few weeks and I can't promise everything won't be RIDICULOUSLY DARK but Anders will be in it.
Yay yay yay! Ridiculously dark, though? Anders and your ginger Hawke aren't settling down to raise dozens of kittens?
I just saw so very little crazy at all in my Anders friendmance. It really seems like, with Hawke's support, Justice and Anders merged pretty well and became pretty content. As long as they can keep on fighting for mage freedom, I see them staying content. So really I have no problem seeing Hawke and Anders riding off into the sunset to fight Templars together happily ever after.
Well, the Ella incident happened regardless. And do the codexes stay the same for friendmance and rivalmance? If so then it talks about his instability there.

Other than the crowning moment(s) of crazy, Anders was relatively stable in the friendmance with my Hawke. She talked him down from killing the mage but experienced a severe "Seriously, dude?" moment when her attempts at peaceful mediation were met with an exploding Chantry. Still, the codex entry does reflect that Anders loses more of himself over time, with Hawke being one of the few things keeping him sane/human.

They're gonna have a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence and 2.5 kittens.

With all Anders' talk about Hawke helping him, I wonder if non-romanced Anders is even less stable than romanced!Anders.

There's probably a sliding scale of stability. Friendmance Anders is more stable than non-romanced Anders, who is more stable than Rivalmance Anders.

LOL
I really do miss Fereldan.
As for stability Anders is pretty unstable regardless. I think the differences is how much he shows it to the PC.
Is it that hard? In what context would talking about the 'ecstasy' of fulfilling Justice's purpose be infinitely creepier. Think about it.
This is the internet, I thought I wouldn't have to... elaborate.
They need to think long and hard about it.
I'm starting to think I'm the creepy one here, because I don't see any creepiness
I dunno, I think Anders talking about the 'ecstasy of fulfilling justice' right after/during sex with Hawke would be kind of disturbing. But then I was mildly . . . weirded out by/felt awkward about Anders' battle cry of "Suck on a fireball."
I paused the game and proceeded to laugh my ass off for a good minute after I heard that. Yet again, he doesn't come with a fire spell D:
BTW HAPPY 200 EVERYONE! (we got here much more quickly than the last thread did, but here is some celebratory art)
Looks like Anders escaped by swimming across the lake! My Kane Amell congratulates him. He would be far too lazy to try the same thing.

I am so in the minority.

Kaya did promise Justice that they would kill all the templars. Sure, it was right before he almost attacked that mage woman... but I thought it was cute, like Kaya was comforting him.

Yes I think you are right about the codexes, though I didn't check them.
The Ella thing happened, but I mean...he was able to regain control. So while, yes, there was crazy, it just didn't seem like a whole lot of crazy.
It is just the impression I got from one playthrough. Not trying to make an argument or say that anyone else is wrong. I'm obviously in the total minority so it's probably me that's wrong.
Also, I'm not saying I see Hawke and Anders settling down and raising a bunch of babies. But if they're both intent on fighting mage injustice, I can see them being happy.

Maybe. But I kind of think Anders would share with a friend-mancing Hawke.
I like to see it as, with the friendmance, Justice doesn't see the need to come out because Anders isn't being persuaded against his course of action. So the two of them ARE one on that issue. With the rivalry path, because Hawke is so important to him, he's constantly questioning himself and painting himself into a corner of self doubt and delusion and so Justice sees the need to take over and keep him on track. It's not like the Fenris rival path, where you can actually convince him (to a certain extent) that mages shouldn't be treated like slaves. Nothing you do to Anders or say to him can sway him from the path he's on, so taking the rival path to me just seems cruel.
Of course, I'm metagaming here. If by taking the rival path you could somehow convince him not to blow up the chantry I'd be all for it. Although I seem to have convinced myself now that blowing up the chantry is necessary. But you can't do that in-game, so rivalry to me doesn't work for Anders.
Holy smeck, this thread is fast! 24 hours and 30+ pages later...

Thank you! I wanted the end to be more "I love you, let me free you from Vengeance" than "Eh, I'm through with you" but couldn't pull it off with the cutscene provided. Maybe I should have added captions.
Anders: I'm glad it's you. Hawke: Be free, my love.
I think you succeeded. Really.
My heart can't take watching it again right away (oh gods no ANDERS) but with the combination of the music and choice of scenes that was exactly the impression I got. It tells a love story from start to finish.
Thank you, signcherie, DeaHamlet and Rheia! I know tragedy is a tough sell. I thought Alistair broke my heart, but Anders -- augh. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to romance him again, but am not really interested in the others.
I was surfing for more Anders music vids and liked these:
All our time slips away by laurav2
Heavy in your arms by iFailGamez
Sorry if they've been posted before.
I'm so glad I missed the manic Anders dialogue! It would have made me want to run for the hills. Well, more than before. I agree with everyone who desperately wanted Alistair to take them back to Ferelden.
Hawke: I'll drink the damn blood, just get me away from these sodding Chantry nutjobs! Cullen is the most sane person here! *Cullen*! D'you hear me?!
Was anyone else utterly frustrated by their inability to connect with Thrask's underground? My Hawke would see Templars and mages getting along and think to herself "Oh, good! Sensible people! I'll go chat with them." Only to have them freak out on her and wind up a pile of corpses. Arrrgh! Should never have looked up those blood mages for Meredith. *mutters* My Hawke was a tremendous failure in the do-gooder area. A veritable Elthina of Champions.
@Pseudocognition Fluff, yes, please! Need fluff to counteract all the darkness. DAMMIT, ANDERS.
Good night. See you in another 30 pages...
Edit: @signcherie I friendmanced him too and didn't see excessive amounts of crazy either. Hawke was there to keep him from going off the deep end -- until the end. Oops.

The problem I have with the friendmance is that I don't think it's healthy for Anders to see himself and Justice completely as one. I think that's -- a very sad thing. It traps him, in a way. He is Justice. Entirely. There's no him left, because whoever he was is now something else.
I wanted to go rivalry on him, but it seems like all the choices are "i hate mages D<" where I wanted "I don't like the fact that you're doing a possession thing, but I like mages" option.
You can like mages and send them to the circle because you think it's the best option. I have a mage currently that is pro circle because to him most mages are idiots that will get mixed up in bloodmagic and cause a lot of destruction.
He does believe mages who have proven themselves capable should be released however.
@Kawamura I get where you're going with that, but I personally think it would be better for them to be more integrated. I mean, he constantly says that he and Justice are one, but every time something comes up that Justice doesn't agree with (romancing Hawke) it's pretty obvious they have differences of opinion, and also pretty obvious that Anders can tell when it's Justice disapproving of something and not just his own self-doubt.
If the rival path could some how bring Justice over to being more like Anders and less all "vengeance and fury" I'd be happy with it too. But to be honest, although I like that Bioware TRIED with the whole friend/rival thing, it didn't quite match up to my hopes. I think in order to make it work they should have made it far more complex, and it would have ended up taking up far to much of the game. IE: I hate mages gives you +10 rivalry, I agree with you but not your methods gives you +5 rivalry.... there needed to be more dialogue options with more variations of rivalry if you know what I mean?

I think it's sad, too. But...if there's no way to separate them out again, I think it's better to make peace with what he is now than to struggle for something he can't achieve?
The only times it seems like there's no Anders left is when Justice takes over, which happens much more often in rivalry than in friendship. Seems like Anders has more control when he's accepting of Justice.
Yeah, I have no problem with training for mages because clearly they succumb to easily to demons. They go to mage school and Templars can be truant officers.
Question... does anyone have links to the friendmance Anders video(s) of the Chantry section? Like where after the Chantry blows, she/he agrees with Anders that maybe he's right, spares him and asks him to come with her/him? I'm really looking for vids of ALL the important parts in the romance where Hawke answers mostly with the first answers, and not with the smart aleck answers, but I'll take finding that one scene (or two as the case may be). I can find all the smart aleck and brutal stuff, but not those.
