Edit: actually, I think that the Ella encounter could have been written better, too. What if there were a good templar, unquestionably good, who was helping smuggle mages out from the inside, protecting Ella, and Anders killed him? Making Justice's desire to kill every last templar seem crazy and having Anders be unable to resist that impulse seems a lot more plausible and convincing. Alternatively, it could be that Anders kills Ella when she's trying to protect the Templar who was helping her... that would actually make sense.

That would have been very interesting!

Also letting us navigate Hawke to stand between Janders/Ella and then try to talk him down would have been nice.

It's been a long time since I rolled an Amell Warden, but Surana, at least, gets the dialogue option of telling Duncan that she/he's treated badly for being an elf. And the one elf apprentice ("You're in my light") is always grumpy and if I remember correctly, has an attitude of "I'll show you all once I become powerful enough."

I'm still amused by "I need the rod for my research into..burning things." And the crazy enchanter asks you to set a templar's clothes on fire with it, I think. Been a while since I played through the mage origin.

It baffles me that Meredith allowed templars like Ser Alrik and Ser Karras among her ranks.

I'm not baffled. I quoted the Wiki not too long ago, but templars like Ser Alrik and Ser Karras are actually encouraged because they don't let their emotions (ie. sympathy) get in the way of their "fanatacism" (ie. willingness to be rape/murder templars).

It still angers me when I click on Alain at the Gallows and he mentions Ser Alrek sneaking into his quarters.:(

American (and Canadian, for that matter) accents tend to be much more discrete in the East and then start averaging out the further west you get.  I grew up in Seattle, which accent-wise is pretty much Blandsville.  The other side of the country can get trickier.  (Slang can give it away sometimes even if you're fuzzy on the accent, though.  For example, if anyone ever talks about being on line for something and they DON'T mean the Internet?  New Yorker.  :)

Heh - I'll have to remember that one for New York. :) Only one I've ever encountered that I had trouble understanding was Southern Californian, you'd think my hearing was going the number of times I had to ask people to repeat themselves. If you want to get a sampling of some north/south accents over here have a look at this.

And because I keep wandering off-topic:

Hadn't thought about this poem in many years, but all the talk of the Circle as a prison reminded me of Maya Angelou's chilling "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings"...

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Oh AGES ago I promised I'd link people here to my bioware bang fic when it was finished. It's about Anders in the Tower. Um...

Here it is on DevArt because you can see the art with it as well:

Nine hours, y'all?

Anyway, since it's too early for me to think of something to say (besides read Miri's fic! Seriously, it's pretty great), here's a shipworthy picture of F!Nate and F!Anders:

Birds have long been used to sympolize freedom. It likely has to do with their ability to fly while humans are stuck on the ground. But a more complete answer would probably be best left to someone who studied anthropology or mythology. I can just tell you that in literature, bird imagery tends to crop up when someone's talking about freedom. Just one prominent example would be the short story "The White Heron" by Sarah Orne Jewett, in which the eponymous bird (in most accepted interpretations) represents a little girl's struggle to be free of her caretaker, her gender role, and/or society as a whole.

So yeah, I think the feathers on Anders' coat are definitely meant to symbolize his struggle for freedom. Notice how the same motif creeps into Fenris' outfit, as well, rather fitting for a character who escaped slavery.

A quick question, if you'll all kindly indulge me!

Was the issue of Anders' phylactery ever addressed in canon? I know that "Freedom for Anders" was a quest in Awakening (my Amell got really excited at the thought that his phylactery might be destroyed, too!) but if I recall correctly, that quest ended rather disappointingly.

Because I was just thinking... Cassandra really wants to find the Champion and the Warden, right? Well, my Champion is a loyal Andersmancer and my Warden is an Amell. So why doesn't Cassandra just call up her Templar buddies in Ferelden and get them to track down Anders and Amell? Do phylacteries simply not work on Grey Warden mages? If so, then why the big deal about destroying Anders' phylactery in Awakening?

My apologies if you've all already discussed this or if I'm simply missing a huge piece of canon, but I cannot for the life of me recall if that issue was ever addressed. As much as I love the thought of Anders and my Hawke running off and effortlessly avoiding the Templars forever, the "leash" of Circle mages was always a real threat, even for the Hero of Ferelden! So why doesn't Cassandra use it?

The phylacteries in game were never addressed.  Though... that won't stop us from addressing them in fic.

But... doesn't it seem like they should be addressed?? Especially for a mage Warden! It seems like a pretty critical detail-!

Doesn't Anders at one point say that if the Wardens don't try to drag him back, the Circle will? That could be in reference to his phylactery.

I remember that quote... but was there ever anything more concrete than that?

Now I'm really curious about the issue. Why Cassandra hasn't simply employed Templars and utilized both Anders' and Amell's phylacteries seems like a plot-point Dragon Age should tackle at some point, even if they don't go into great length to do so. Just a cast-off line about "If only phylacteries could be used to track down Wardens! Alas, the taint in their blood makes them immune to our tricks!" would satisfy me...

Sadly you can't, the quest was a setup by the templars. There were no phylacteries in the warehouse.

No, it was a ruse! I remember that really clearly! Because I played an Amell who pretty much JUMPED at the chance to destroy his OWN phylactery, and Anders was all, "Whoa, calm down, I don't even know if yours is in there, but Nameya said that mine is, so let's focus on what's important, yeah?"

...and then there were no phylacteries, just a bunch of smug Templars who immediately got a fistful of fireball to the face.

......so yeah, both Amell and myself still consider the issue "unresolved." :?

That would be wonderful... otherwise, I'm sending Zev on a covert mission to get a few phylacteries....:innocent:
