So at work today I was cleaning up and on the radio this song started playing:
Muse-Uprising

I stopped and said.... hey its Anders theme song! B)

Haha, I'd always associated that song with Anders very strongly. I think I may even have played it while I was killing templars. Glad I'm not the only one to make that association.

Also, speaking of Muse: if there was ever a band I wished that the Dragon Age franchise found a way to use, it's Muse.

Anyway, sorry for side-tracking the current topic of conversation.

I feel like we never got the chance to kill enough Templars. I think you ended up killing like 5x more Mages in DA2 (or well, abominations) it makes me sad. DA3 I demand large amounts of Templar killing.

Haha, we'll I'd love the chance to confinue the mage revolution from where it began; however, even more than killing templars I'd like to meet some who I genuinely like. Short of Emeric and Thrask, I just wanted to throttle the lot of them (including Cullen, though he had some redeeming moments).

If we could lead an army of templars that had seperated themselves from the Chantry to fight for mages, that'd be . . . well, ridiculously awesome.

Highly unlikely, but still ridiculously awesome.

I can dream. ;)

So while I agree that his bird motif can be connected to his wish for freedom, I also think that there's a lot more meaning and thought being put into it. It's the big reason why I was freaking out when the new costume first showed up. The cool thing is he can be seen as both the raven and the crow simultaniously, or depending on your PoV one or the other.

I ****ing love symbolism.

I saw that outfit and thought of the Irish war godess Badb Catha who was supposed to warn of the impending death of a notable person when she appeared, usually as a crow, her supposedly having a sister called Morrígan in the legends doesn't hurt either, but it could be cultural bias on my part.

EDIT: As someone else aready pointed out :)

You I know this Idea of Templar that end up falling for a  Mage  and they were going to make the mage tranquil for something  Mage did not do and the Templar rebelled  both of now on the run

Rebel Templar ... DO WANT.     I would so play that part very well.

I would think there would be some Templars that would join in to help the mages. I mean, even in crazy town Kirkwall there were Templars willing to risk their necks to help mages. Unfortunately those mages included Grace so everything went to hell but still. It shows that there are Templars willing to work for something better for mages. Maybe not a lot, but there have got to be some rebel Templars.

Grace was  dumb from jump street  or a product of a system that made Mages  with a "Three Hots and Cot" type of mentality.

I just hope what ever they're doing for da3, they don't give us an orlesian MC. Srsly. I really dont want to sit through 60 some odd hours of a game and listen to myself talk with a bad Parisian accent.

And with all this blatant foreshadowing, Bioware will troll us, and game will take place in Rivain or Tervinter :wizard:
Or maybe we'll be traveling around the Thedas, starting in Orlais, but not as Orleasian.. yeah, too much to hope.

That sounds like amondra's Thera Hawke, except for the part where they make Anders tranquil. They'd have to catch Anders first. And it's a very good character concept, IMO.

Silly prediction time: DA2 was set in a new location with a character of Ferelden descent. So DA3 must be set in a new locasion with a character of Kirkwallian descent. Clearly.

*It's really how they should have introduced Cullen. An optional character you get only if you're a circle mage and heavy-handed flirt with Cullen durring your origin. When they threaten to tranquil you, and you go off with the GW, then return to the circle, he ops to go with the GW to "protect the warden" ;x

Ser Gillmore for Cousland, Cullen for Circle Mage, Leske for Broska/whats-his-name for DN, Sorris for CE, and whats-his-name who goes to look for Tamlen with you for DE..  but only if you choose the right dialog options.

F yea, I'm a genious. Someone at bioware should employ me.

Yes, she did.

In other discussions... did we ever come up with a sufficient reason that Anders gives you friendship for turning Fenris over to Danarius?

Other than the fact that the sheer and utter hatred they have for each other makes Alistair and Morrigan look positively cuddly in comparison? :P  Maybe Anders saw turning Fenris over as an appropriate retribution for supporting a system he sees as slavery.

But does Fenris actually support it?  He refuses to turn Merrill and Anders over to the Templars when Sebastian suggests it.

He vehemently supports the templars and the Circle, so I would say yes. If Hawke decided to turn either Merrill or Anders over to the Circle, no doubt Fenris would give massive friendship points, but he considers that Hawke's business and not his.

Hadn't thought about this poem in many years, but all the talk of the Circle as a prison reminded me of Maya Angelou's chilling "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings"...

Hmmm..... wonder if thats why they stuck feathers on his pauldrons/epaulets?

Birds have long been used to sympolize freedom. It likely has to do with their ability to fly while humans are stuck on the ground. But a more complete answer would probably be best left to someone who studied anthropology or mythology. I can just tell you that in literature, bird imagery tends to crop up when someone's talking about freedom. Just one prominent example would be the short story "The White Heron" by Sarah Orne Jewett, in which the eponymous bird (in most accepted interpretations) represents a little girl's struggle to be free of her caretaker, her gender role, and/or society as a whole.

So yeah, I think the feathers on Anders' coat are definitely meant to symbolize his struggle for freedom. Notice how the same motif creeps into Fenris' outfit, as well, rather fitting for a character who escaped slavery.

As far as symbolism goes, Anders's first outfit supports this. His second one however...

Can be seen two ways because ravens and crows have different meanings but both have black feathers.

For instance the Greeks and Romans saw crows as bad omens and ravens as good omens. The Native Americans believed ravens to be symbolic of the void and that the raven's iridescent blue and green on black feathers represented the constant change of what emerges from the void (aka people, places, and things getting so bad they lose a sense of self and emerge from the chaos different). Celts straight up saw crows as omens of death. In Europe crows were considered such bad luck that seeing a dead one was a sign of good fortune.

The Celts also associate Ravens with spiritual healing and prophecy...just saying in case you are interested.

Going back to the Chantry now...

John.

In the Highlands of Scotland where I grew up, a Ravens call also forewarned of death in the family or house, so when Anders outfit turned black, I had an idea that something was about to happen.

Yes, she did go with you, but there was also another elf, a male. I forget his name and I'm to lazy to look it up, who could also go with you. Maybe he doesn't if you're male? I dunno. The only male in DA:O I ever played was Circle Mage elf ;p

AH HA, here it is, from the wiki:

Fenarel: A young, male warrior in the clan of the Dalish Elf Origin and temporary companion of the protagonist.

His name is Fenarel! Coincidentally very close to the name of the Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel. His parents must have had quite some plans for him.

EDIT: Ach, nein. Ninja'd again.

And since we know one of the ways THAT can turn out at the end of Origins, I think we should have had a similiar option in DA2....

I agree with that assessment on Anders's approval of getting rid of Fenris. Anders has a petty moment, Hawke is getting rid of a man that he, Anders, hates a whole lot. Fenris isn't exactly going to die... Also, it's what he deserves for thinking mages should be locked away and oh well who cares if they're abused a lot.

And, I'm saying that that's the perspective Anders would take. It's not my perspective. ;d
